After our first child arrived I realized that I wasn't free any longer. My mind returned to the good old days when I was free to daydream and do whatever it was that I wanted to do. When I was younger I had wanted to grow up to be a bird, a frog, an ant or a baby bee, but I had grown up to be a man, and now I had a wife and a baby son. Things were not the way I had imagined they would be. Now I had to go to work every day to pay the bills, and I didn't even like my job. It felt like I was bound in chains that were unbreakable. There seemed to be no way out, but there was a way out. All I had to do was accept that life had changed, that I had changed, and I needed to make the best of it. After making that decision life got better and better. I realized that the true plan for life was to create our own homes and families, and that sooner or later we will all return to our heavenly home. I love being home, and at the homes of my siblings, friends, and parents. Home is not really a physical place so much as it is where we are surrounded by people who love us. For me, being home is being where I am loved and accepted.

The invitation to compose an anthem for Easter Sunday from my home parish of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco, Simon Berry, conductor, was for me an opportunity to fulfill a long-desired wish: to respond to Randall Thompson's 'Alleluia,' which I have known by heart since I was 15 years old. I have long admired the expressive lyricism and immensely satisfying formal unfolding of Thompson's masterpiece. My setting is for mixed chorus divisi in 8 parts, and is based on two contrasting melodic motives which are continually developed and move through many tonalities before returning to the bright opening tonality of A major. -David Conte.

For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. When I finally woke up, I wrote this words in Portuguese and made a song out of it. the words go like:Ponte eterna abismo sem fundo - Vento ciclónico medo profundo - Comboio gelado lentidão d`aço - Espiral eterna suspensa no espaço - Maos agarram a vida duas barras d` aço - Corpo sacudido em espasmos de medo - Alucinação divina acordar de um sonho Eternal Bridge endless Abyss - Cyclonic wind deep Fear - Frozen Train slowness of steel - Eternal spiral suspended in space - Hands cling to life on two bars of steel - Body shaken into spasms of fear - Divine hallucination waking up from a dream

Praise and Swing is in a Gospel Jazz style. It should have a heavy feel on beats two and four and the eight notes are in a swing style. The tambourine and hand-clap parts are not essential but will add a great deal to the gospel flavor. The song is based on Show Me the Way To Go Home, chord changes and will serve as a basis for the young improviser. Chord changes are printed in all parts at the improvisation section and additional written-out solo parts for violin, viola, and cello, are listed on separate pages for students to duplicate and take-home for practice. As in all jazz string ensemble selections, there should be one solo bass at the improvisation section who may perform the written bass line or work off the chord changes. One of these, The Ladies' Wreath, was of special interest. The inscription inside the front cover read To Miss Sophia Venable by her friend William M. Duphuy, April 25, 1850. Within the collection of romantic short stories and poems was The Poet's Pen from the Greek didactic poet Menecrates. Here was something very different from the overly sentimental offerings in most of the volume. I imagined the solitary lady reading this would feel most exhilarated and even empowered. Ideas for setting the poem came almost immediately, with the oboe as a key figure. Having experimented with a choral setting, I settled on tenor, oboe and piano and in 1989 the piece was completed. I revised The Poet’s Pen in 2016. The Poet's Pen I was a useless reed; no cluster hungMy brow with purple grapes; no blossom flungThe coronet of crimson on my stem;No apple blushed upon me, nor (the gemof flowers) the violet strewed the yellow heathAround my feet; nor jessamine's sweet wreathRobed me in silver: day and night I pinedOn the lone moor, and shivered in the wind.At length a poet found me. My wife with MS was doing the best she could with the illness; her coping mechanism was to ignore reality. In addition my mother in-law's health had gotten worse which required more of my time, including the maintenance of her home. Add a full time job, a new dog the wife rescued and 2 cats and there was in essence negative time for me. This piece explores those feelings. The Music Rock music with a nice harmonized chorus. Each song in this collection is notated for Handbells on one part and Boomwhackers® on a second part. For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord reference chart is also provided for each song.This set of scores uses colored noteheads corresponding to the Boomwhackers® color scheme. If you have a set of bells or tubes with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the instruments match the Boomwhackers® color scheme. This set of scores is also available (separate purchase) in black and white which will print clearer if you do not have access to a color printer.Several of these arrangements include two verses with a first easy verse followed by an intermediate second verse. For the songs with two verses, an optional ending is provided for the first verse or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics and chord names are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of these songs. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one note to each person.
