EMAIL ME FOR PARTS: mudiwamusic@gmail.comI joke that I am a hypocritical musician. As an audience member, I hate listening to really dissonant, contemporary music. Names like Schonberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, and so on don’t sit well with me. However, when writing music, I seem to lean pretty heavily on contemporary ideas like ostinatos, crunchy chords, and new harmonies. This piece started as an assignment to write 16 measures of music using pandiatonicism. Music that is pandiatonic is music with a feeling of more than one key. Every note is treated somewhat equal, so nothing sticks out as “tonic.†Try humming the tonic when listening to this piece. You can’t, because more than one exists. Since this is music with no tonic, it almost has “no name,†unlike how classical music may be labeled “Concerto in Eb Major.†I greatly appreciate the work of Austin Andrade, Aidan Lewis, Eithan Moreno, and Heather test, as the performers and director for this piece.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage. Therefore it can be used instrumentally or if required, there is a number in the score of which, although the guitar has a melody and one of the choral voices, with two guitars, or make two choral voices or join with your own melody, use both bowed string instruments and plucked strings, etc.Likewise, there are two voices, of which a single voice can use the phrasings of both one voice and the other, giving it its own personality.The tempo will be whatever the interpretation itself wants, much slower, without accelerating so much between the beginning and the moment of the song itself. I have incorporated some instruments into the arrangement as examples:Buzukibouzouki, like the sazturco and the Lebanese Buzuq, which belong to the same family of Buzuki instruments.And as percussion only percussion The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument from Turkey. The Turkish Darbuka have a high range of low and high resonant tones that sound between the two registers; serious (Dum) and acute (Tek). The edge or lip allows for finger breaking techniques that are not possible in the Egyptian Darbuka.And the Tombak, also called Dombak Ozarb, is a chalice-shaped drum, traditionally built with a hollowed-out biker or walnut trunk covered with skin at one end.With the beginning and among the work itself I wanted to give place to the Bashraf (Turkish Pesrev and Persian Pishraw, which means Overture) and the Sama'i (Turkish Sam Semai) Instrumental genre that is used in the Turkish court and in Sufi music . They were introduced into the Arab world before the 19th century.And also give place in his forms to the Ottoman composer Ismail Hakkibei (1866-1927). Unite Serrat with Hakkibey with this Istanbul-Algeciras work.Although the Bashraf is always made up of four points, Khanat (Plural Dekhana) or Hanne in Turkish, which are always followed by a chorus (Taslim / Teslim), its structure being Khana 1+ Taslim, Khana 2, Khana 3+ Taslim, Khana 4 + Taslim.The fragments must be incorporated since the main base is the Mediterranean pop theme. Without forgetting that in music Arabic with the oriental rhythm Lsaada Duyukde 8/8 making a cycle for each measure of 4/4, that is, cycles per phrase, if those written for Western reading in 4/4 with double durations and simplicity. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. Italian.My collection of laude has its origins in the world of early music, being based in spirit and feeling on the unaccompanied vocal “laude†found in a collection from 13th century Cortona. The people who originally sang such things - the ‘laudesi’ - banded together in confraternities but were not usually associated with any particular church and this music was not part of any liturgy. The first laude that I wrote were, like the mediaeval originals, for unaccompanied voice - for the soprano Anna Maria Friman. I then wrote some for two voices, adding the tenor John Potter, and some for three sopranos, the Trio Mediaeval. Gradually I added more for other vocal combinations as well as some with instrumental accompaniment. But I do return from time to time to the ‘purer’ solo or duo lauda. In 2006 I wrote a number of pieces for the Estonian National Men’s Choir (RAM) chiefly through my friendship and collaborations with its conductor Kaspars Putnins who, as well as conducting the Latvian Radio Choir, was director of RAM. I wrote two laude for them. Lauda 31 was completely new, while Lauda 32 is a new version of Lauda 19 “Omne homoâ€. Both make full use of the special quality of the Estonian choir and Lauda 32 in particular deliberately aims to have the sound of singers in a Russian Orthodox tradition.Whatever vocal approach I use for setting lauda texts, I treat them with great respect in relation to the original lauda. I adhere as far as possible to the same number of notes to a syllable that are in the mediaeval versions, frequently following the melodic contours and sometimes quoting individual phrases. Often I find that my periods of working abroad give me the space to think of things in new ways. This song is a good example of that.One look at the first page of the score of 'On That Cross' is all you need to realize that this is not a case of a choir singing with a piano accompaniment. I put the piano part above the choir in order to dispel that misconception. So if it's not that, what is it? I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. So in such frame of mind I started to write the lyrics to 'On That Cross'.The first words that came into my mind were “Oh men who dare to call on gods to justify your hatred – of this be sure …†and I wanted to follow that with threats of eternal damnation, torture in hellfire and so on. Except that the words that flowed out of my fingers onto my computer screen were not like that at all. “Of this be sure – I love you still, my cross your salvation from all the sin of man.â€It doesn’t get much more powerful than that. I may be incapable of loving the people of ISIS, ISIL, DAESH or whatever one calls them, but my God isn’t. It’s a 17th century song. It’s a 19th century song. Actually, it’s both! The lyrics were certainly published, and probably written, by Robert Cox for his play Actaeon and Diana, published in 1656. The tune was first published in John Playford’s The English Dancing Master in 1651. There is no evidence that, in the 17th century, the lyrics were sung to this melody. That didn’t happen for two hundred years, when William Chappell put the two together for his Popular Music of the Olden Time, vol. 1 (1859). I have added chords to the melody. Whilst humming the tune to myself, I found myself moving into 6/8 time, and that inspired me to compose a galliard based on it, complete with ‘divisions’ (runs of semiquavers or 32nd notes) and counterpoint. The song melody and the galliard can be played separately or as parts of one piece, perhaps with the galliard played between two of the verses. I put the galliard in A minor, to provide a contrast with the D minor song melody, but play them in whatever key takes your fancy. The technique of intarsia inlays sections of wood (at times with contrasting ivory or bone, or mother-of-pearl) within the solid stone matrix of floors and walls or of table tops and other furniture; by contrast marquetry assembles a pattern out of veneers glued upon the carcass. It is also a knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors.This beautiful snapshot weaves its melodic lines in and out of the this interesting, but surprisingly effect texture. This piece marked the beginning of a tradition in my family. To mark their senior years, I compose a piece for each of my children. This piece is open to whatever they wish and thus,my oldest (to whom this piece is lovingly dedicated), decided she wanted to play a piece with a couple of her friends.

Rock Lobster is a song written by Fred Schneider and Ricky Wilson from the band The B-52's. This song became one of their most iconic, launching the band's career. Rock Lobster is a fun, quirky, and energetic party song with a repeated driving guitar riff, a catchy melody, and even aquatic animal calls. My arrangement for brass band is inspired by the style of Lucky Chops, so even though this is a brass band, saxophones are involved. This type of brass band originated in New Orleans. Program Notes: -Drumset player, even though I've written a full part for you, the idea is that you play whatever you want, as long as it fits the style of the piece. Treat my part for you as a base, build off from it however you please. -Optional 8vas are HIGHLY recommended. These really enhance the arrangement. -Trumpet and Alto Saxophone, in your parts starting at J, it says to make aquatic animal noises with your instrument. Each time you make a noise, do something wildly different from before. Use any techniques such as growling, rapid tounging, enharmonics, etc. to achieve such sounds. -It's more fun when you memorize the music!
