Key: C major.The Beatles classic with the Advent hymn, In Dulci Jubilo. Both texts come from dreams, and this winds up a meaningful combination. In Dulci was written in the 14th century by German monk and teacher Heinrich Suso (or Seuse), who writes in his third-person autobiography about a dream he had: Now this same angel came up to the Servant [Suso] brightly, and said that God had sent him down to him, to bring him heavenly joys amid his sufferings; adding that he must cast off all his sorrows from his mind and bear them company, and that he must also dance with them in heavenly fashion. Then they drew the Servant by the hand into the dance, and the youth began a joyous song about the infant Jesus, which runs thus: In dulci jubilo... About 650 years later, in 1968, Paul McCartney was staying out late, drinking too much, and thinking that the Beatles were probably going to break up soon. Then one night, somewhere between deep sleep and insomnia, I had the most comforting dream about my mother, who died when I was only 14. She had been a nurse, my mum, and very hardworking, because she wanted the best for us.... At night when she came home, she would cook, so we didn’t have a lot of time with each other. But she was just a very comforting presence in my life. And when she died, one of the difficulties I had, as the years went by, was that I couldn’t recall her face so easily.... So in this dream twelve years later, my mother appeared, and there was her face, completely clear, particularly her eyes, and she said to me very gently, very reassuringly: “Let it be.†It was lovely. I woke up with a great feeling. It was really like she had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message: Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out. His mother's name was Mary, or course. He wrote the song in the next few days, and it was released on the album on the same name in 1970, a month after the Beatles split up. As for the actual texts, they're very different. In Dulci is macaronic (alternating between two languages, in this case Latin and a translation from Medieval German) and ecstatic; Let It Be is English and more subdued. In this version, we alternate between the two but keep the Let It Be structure, except for a diversion in the middle where the well-known Bach setting is adopted as kind of an interlude. The two texts and melodies are sung together in the last verse (the fourth In Dulci verse and the third Let It Be verse), where both are talking about music.

The melody and lyrics are like the original as far as I can tell, but I did make changes to the harmony. Usually these changes to the harmony are to enhance the word painting, or to have it be more idiomatic to guitar. A version like this is ideal for someone who wants to play a very fancy version of the song on solo guitar, though adding vocals in should still be fairly easy. I personally sing a lot better if I can play the melody first on guitar because then I know exactly what I'm doing. Versions like these can really be as simple or as complex as you want, if you want something simple, just play the chord diagrams and sing!1. Guitar Arrangement Lead Sheet Style2. Guitar Tab 3. Chord Charts 4. Less stereotypical chords 5. Fingerings and letter names added to aid in sight-reading 6. Voice leading considerations 7. Making the music idiomatic for guitarTips:1. Notes with the stem direction going down are background harmonies that should be played quietly. This hidden meaning tends to only happen with polyphonic instruments such as piano and guitar. You'll eventually notice this anyways because there is no lyric underneath the note.1. Slurs are notated to the make the music easier and better sounding for guitar not vocals, though of course it often mimicks slurs similiar to a vocalist.2. Fmaj7(#11) is not in the original and is a key change since it includes an F and not an F#.3. Sometimes it can look like the melody does not contain a key change, but then when you anaylze the letter names of the chords, you will find that there is indeed key changes in the chords. The Beatles is a good example of a band that does this often.4. E minor and G major chords technically only need 2 or 3 notes. This is one simple but effective strategy to have less cliche chords.5. The F(#5)(#11) chord in the second to last measure could probably be just an F major chord.6. The E natural in measure 42 could be an Eb if the harmony is too avant-garde for you. Made sense to me because of word painting and I wanted a keyless and dreamy feeling for the end. 7. G/B chords are arguably nicer than a full G chord, though of course the decision is ultimately up to. It is better because the chord is imperfect, it causes the audience to not clap too soon. I also only strum the chord up to where the vocal melody is happening, that way the main melody is always in the spot light, and I find songs are easier to sing this way.

If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. This was a natural contrast to the soothing jazz style of “Christmas Time is Here.†The in your face jazz/blues style of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch†was a style the students had not experienced, but adapted to immediately and joyfully! The appeal that puts this arrangement over the top is the way it portrays the story with a tender violin solo echoed by (spoiler alert) the solo Cello Grinch voice at the end.While teaching at the high school level, I had an exceptional Cello section that had just dominated the November All-State auditions. I wanted to feature them in the next concert, but I couldn't find any appropriate holiday arrangements that featured Cello/Bass, or fit their ability level and something they really wanted to play in the available string ensemble repertoire. I suggested this among a few others, got to work on arranging and some of my students favorite arrangements resulted. Several pieces became requirements in the traditional Holiday Concert string ensemble preconcert.  Every year audience members arrived early to get good positions to see and hear the SKHS string ensemble greeting the audience as they entered the foyer leading to the theatre. The initial two arrangements that started the Cellobrate the Holidays set were Christmas Time is Here and You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch that are available now. Watch for others to be added soon. The waltz I ended up with is not really meant for dancing, but rather used as a way for storytelling. This story, however, is one of my own fabrications but is still loosely based on the Atlantis mentioned by Plato's dialogues: Critias and Timaeus. This piece outlines two Atlanteans that, with the end in sight, decide to dance one last waltz together as their gleaming city collapses around them. It's a tragic farewell to a utopia that once was and could've been, but remains now as only a memory – a relic lost at the bottom of the sea.

The melody is left intact, some liberties with the harmonies were taken when there is singing. I'm very proud and happy with how it turned out, sometimes you get lucky and the sections fall perfectly into place (which is suprising since there are some odd 3 measure phrases in here). Features:1. Beginner friendly. The chords are so accurate to what the sheet music is doing, that you don't even really need to read sheet music to play this!2. Harmonies that take difficulty, style, voice leading, and melody into consideration3. Condensed lead sheet version that fits on 2 pages to avoid a page turn; yet it is packed with details and naunces.4. Beautifully engraved sections that visually make sense on the page.Tips:1. Measures 8-16 I named that chords as if both guitars were taken into consideration. I'm guilty of sometimes saying, Oh it's just a rock song with power chords, but then you look into the details, and the chords are actually quite jazzy.2. Maybe She sang needs a fermata?3. If a song is in B minor and never changes key, fret 1 will never happens! Be in position 2 for this song! That's why I didn't put fingerings in, they would have been as helpful as confusing.4. Maybe it's a given, but I recommend forcing melody notes on to the chord in one way or another. Sometimes I go on spurts of notating many complex chords to account for the melody, other times I just show one chord per measure but kind of assume that you'll make the guitar work more fancy with the melody notes. Maybe this is overthinking the arrangement, but there is great voicings I'm doing that I want to get across, but sometimes I won't do it because the score will get too busy looking. Just food for thought, depends on your agenda I suppose.

The song was, in a way, to answer people who just accuse me of being soppy. The nice payoff now is that a lot of the people I meet who are at the age where they've just got a couple of kids and have grown up a bit, settling down, they'll say to me, I thought you were really soppy for years, but I get it now! Published by Erik Cole (A0.996132). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This is a collection of the remaining Promenades found throughout the work. All are so short that it seemed wise to bundle them, and it is unlikely you would want to perform any of them unless you were performing the entire piece.

If you want to try this on a standard violin, well... good luck with the 5-note chords!I realize we extended-range violinists are few & far between, but if you (like me) appreciate the unique ability of this instrument to cover bass substitutions, chord melodies, and other roles that were previously thought exclusive to fretted/keyed instruments, this arrangement is an excellent demonstration of some of the really cool ways that you can bring a melody to life without the need for any effects or accompaniment. It is not for the faint of heart, and will definitely take some practicing, but if you can tackle the harmony this is a chart that is guaranteed to impress any jazz-nerd in the room... or your money back!*A challenging, yet elegant take on one of my favorite jazz ballads, this arrangement is great for showing off your jazz chops as a soloist, but can also work great as background music at one of those weddings or cocktail parties where someone decided it would be a hip idea to have an electric violinist... by themself...without any suggestions on repertoire (don't lie, we've all done at least one of these).
