Instrumental Duet,Piano Flute,Instrumental Duet,Organ,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.997682 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). Arranged by Helene Schulthess. Baroque,Classical,Standards. Score and parts. 16 pages. Helene Schulthess #603340. Published by Helene Schulthess (A0.997682). Among flutists, the Sonata in E-flat major is somewhat avoided. On the one hand this is because the authorship is disputed, on the other hand because it sounds a bit quiet and sometimes a bit dull in the lower tonal range. I transposed it up by a major third. Now it sounds much more radiant. I also transposed the famous Siciliana. Of course, this gives the sonata a different radiance. It is interesting to compare the two keys.

Instrumental Duet Contrabassoon,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.612801 Composed by Jean Baptiste Loeillet of Ghent (1688 – 1720). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Standards,Traditional,Wedding. Score and parts. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #221995. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.612801). John Baptist Loeillet, a Flemish Baroque composer, wrote six sonatas for flute and basso continuo in his Op. 5 No. 2. This work is widely considered to be some of his most significant compositions, and they are still performed today. The sonatas are divided into three movements each, with two slow movements and one faster one. The flute part is very demanding, as Loeillet often wrote in the high register, and the accompanying basso continuo part provides a solid foundation for the piece. The music has an emotional intensity that was characteristic of the Baroque era, and it features various ornamentations, like trills and mordents. The influence of Corelli can be heard in the contrapuntal textures, and the melodic lines are often based on the scales and modes of the period.Loeillet's Op. 5 No. 2 is a beautiful and captivating work, and its timelessness is a testament to its quality. It has been transcribed and adapted for other instruments, and it remains a popular choice for many classical musicians.Contents:Sonata No. 1 Duration: 9:45 Score: 8 pages 1. Vivace 2. Sonata for Multiple Woodwinds and Piano
Small Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Clarinet,Flute,Piano Accompaniment - Level 5 - Digital Downl…

Small Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Clarinet,Flute,Piano Accompaniment - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.837487 Composed by Brett L. Wery. Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 83 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5330711. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837487). I’ve made a performing career out of the ability to play more than one woodwind instrument. In pits and bands all over the world multiple woodwind players, or doublers, are often the unsung heroes of the show. The first one in the pit and the last one out, they bring a technical knowledge of three, sometimes four or five different instrumental traditions not to mention an ability to play in any number of musical styles all in the name of saving the producer a little money. They spend inordinate amounts of time taking lessons, practicing, and dealing with reeds of all shapes and sizes. Over the years the doubler has become an indispensable artist and many top universities and conservatories now offer multiple woodwinds as a major. The Sonata for Multiple Woodwinds and Piano was written for myself and long time friend, colleague, and collaborator, Mark Evans. Professor Evans is a marvelously sensitive and powerfully technical pianist and although the piece is written with myself in mind as the doubler, I owe much of the inspiration to the twenty-plus years I’ve spent making music with Mark. It was my intention to create a sonata for multiple woodwinds that is not a novelty piece but provides the doubler with an opportunity to perform a serious work that explores the expressive and technical boundaries of their instrument(s). By the same token, the pianist is not an accompanist but an equal partner with the doubler.

Baritone Horn TC,Euphonium,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.552860 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516929. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552860). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Bring your best espressivo and plan to rehearse the many subtle dynamic changes.Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano.

Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. www.jamesguthrie.com.

Instrumental Solo,Oboe d'Amore,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549645 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and individual part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516867. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549645). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Bring your best espressivo and plan to rehearse the many subtle dynamic changes. Sonata Pathétique Op. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891917). Written during the last months of Schubert's life, between Spring and Summer 1828, his last 3 Sonatas (19,20,21) are widely regarded as shining examples of the genre for piano. Here I have chosen the 1st movement of Schubert's penultimate piece, the Sonata in A Major (D959). As you would imagine in a Sonata, there are lots of twists and turns, aggressive and passive and at 361 bars (493 if you play the repeat!!), that's the second half of your concert covered!

Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q16177. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q16177). Key: B minor.Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) was a student of Johann Sebastian Bach who greatly valued his musical accomplishments and scholarly knowledge. During his time in Zwickau (1737-43) Krebs composed a collection of six trio sonatas 'Denen Liebhabern der Instrumental-Music zum angenehmen Zeitvertreib', the second of which is the sonata published here. Although still in the formal tradition of the sonata da chiesa, the four-movement church sonata, it already points to the post Baroque era, especially with regard to the melody, to the gallant sentimental movements. This very charming work has been out of print for a long time and is now republished in the Edition Schott.

Woodwind Ensemble Contrabassoon,English Horn,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549212 Composed by Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Renaissance,Standards. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #3465004. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549212). A musical monument: the first composition to employ dynamics. Instrumentation: 3 oboes, 3 English horns, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon. Arranged in two antiphonal choirs. Full Score: 27 pg. 81 ms 4/2, Study Score: 14 pg., Instrumental parts: 2 pg. Duration: 3:45 at half-note = 86.  Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo. Â

Small Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1033406 Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 36 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #637186. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.1033406). The Sonata Hymnica series by composer-pianist James Siddons explores the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies and their words. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, at times whispering---as a sacred harp. In Sonata Hymnica No. 7, which calls for a soprano soloist, liturgical dancers, and two pianos (4 hands), three 19th-century hymns (words and music) serve as core material from which the music is developed. Movement I, “Climbing Higher,†is based on the African American spiritual “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.†The sustained chords, open harmony, and hammer-stroke rhythm evoke the ascent of a mountain climber. Movement II, “The Solid Rock,†is based on the hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less†(1834) . The soprano sings brief lines from the hymn, interspersed with long passages for the pianos (only) that explore many tonal and rhythmic qualities of the original hymn tune. The driving harmony, albeit in duple meter, makes this the scherzo movement of this sonata. Movement III, “On Snowy Wings,†is based on “O Come, Angel Band†by the New England Methodist preacher Jefferson Hascall (1807-1887). In addition to the soprano singer, the appearance of liturgical dancers as angels with “snowy wings†brings this old hymn into the 21st century. Performance duration: 16 minutes.

This concerto follows the structure of the Italian overture – fast, slow, fast. The first movement is a sonata form without development, based on three themes, rhythmical, oriental, waltz respectively. The second movement is characterized by an initial theme with Chopinesque-contours, followed by a more agitated theme and a choral-theme accompanied by a carillon in the treble register of the piano. The recapitulation includes a cadenza, Variation on the choral-theme. The finale is a rondo with a cheerful refrain twirling as a tarentella. Ist festive and dance-like episodes are combined with the perpetuum mobile of the refrain and its variations and the work is rounded off with a brillant, luminous coda. Naji Hakim.

AllegroII. AdagioIII. AllegroJ.S. Bach's Trio Sonatas BWV 525-530 are some of the most popular and beloved works of the Baroque period. Composed in 1717, these six trio sonatas for the organ are among Bach's earliest works for the instrument. They are all in the traditional three-movement form and are composed in the style of the Italian concerto grosso, with two upper voices (treble and alto) and a basso continuo. The two upper voices often intertwine in intricate contrapuntal melodies, while the basso continuo provides harmonic support. The works are also full of virtuosic passages that demonstrate Bach's mastery of the organ. The Trio Sonatas are considered to be among the most important and influential works of the Baroque era, and they continue to be widely performed and studied today. The Bach Trio Sonatas have been successfully transcribed for a variety of ensembles, including wind, string, and brass ensembles. The parts are easily divided among a variety of wind instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. In these transcriptions, the original material is retained, but often with some additional orchestration or embellishment. These transcriptions often emphasize the polyphonic texture of the original works, creating a rich soundscape.  The Sonatas have also been successfully adapted for a variety of string ensembles. In these versions, the original two-part texture with the basso is maintained, creating a full and satisfying sound that allows for a more nuanced interpretation of the works. In addition, these transcriptions often add a variety of dynamic markings and articulations that were not present in the original editions. These transcriptions provide performers with a variety of options for interpreting and performing these beloved works.

Martino Bitti – Dresden Sonata for violin and continuo N.6 in A major (Sinfonia)Anton Domenico Gabbiani – Portrait of Three Musicians of the Medici Court (The violinist is Martino Bitti)Martino Bitti is one of the great virtuosos of the past who has fallen into oblivion. Few know his work today. However, a look at the works he has left us and his life as a musician reveals a great virtuoso who deserves to be rediscovered. The relatively recent work done by Professor Talbot in his work: A Thematic Catalogue of the Instrumental Music of Martino Bitti (1655/6–1743) [ Michael Talbot (2015) A Thematic Catalogue of the Instrumental Music of Martino Bitti (1655/6–1743), Royal Musical Association Research Chronicle, 46:1, 46-94, DOI: 10.1080/14723808.2014.986256] has brought to light some of Bitti’s most interesting compositions. This is the case of this Sinfonia, listed as anonymous until that moment in the archives of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB).The only copy of this work is in the SLUB, as part of the Pisendel collection (Schrank II), the manuscript Mus. 2-R-8, 102, entirely copied by Pisendel. It is very probable that Pisendel copied the sonata during his trip to Italy and his passage through Florence in 1717, where he would meet the crème de la crème of the Florentine violinists: Fanfani and Bitti. Pisendel kept in his collection nine sonatas by Martino Bitti.Bitti’s virtuosity is noted in this work. The large number of double stops and their use in the complex counterpoint of the second movement demand a high technical mastery from the performer.

Small Ensemble Cello,Harpsichord,Violin - Digital Download SKU: A0.890771 Composed by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni. Arranged by Sneakwood Editions. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 8 pages. Sneakwood Editions #4782289. Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.890771). While in Venice, Pisendel met another of the great Italian composers of the time, Tomaso Albinoni. Albinoni, too, was captivated by the young virtuoso, to the extent that Pisendel returned to Dresden with three sonatas for violin and continuo copied by the Italian master himself. But, although we can assume that all three sonatas were dedicated in some way to Pisendel, it is the Sonata for violin and continuo in B flat Major that bears a special dedication on its frontispiece: Sonata a Violino solo di me Tomaso Albinoni Composta p[er] il Sig:[re] Pisendel. And not only this dedication but also certain musical aspects lead us to believe that the sonata in question may have been written specifically for Pisendel. The sonata goes beyond Albinoni’s usual technical requirements, exploring the upper register of the violin in a way that appears only rarely in other sonatas by this Italian. And, in the second movement, marked Allegro, we find an unusual and virtuoso use of triple stops in a fast semi-quaver rhythm. This singular effect is used by Albinoni in only one other work, the Concerto for violin and strings in C Major Co2, although with a strange and interesting nuance: of the versions of the concerto that remain we find this technique only in a manuscript version in Dresden, the version that Pisendel brought back from Italy in 1717 together with the sonata. Other versions of the concerto, such as the one published by Roger around 1717, or other manuscript versions do not contain the triple-stop passages. This suggests that they may be a personal touch added by Albinoni in recognition of Pisendel’s remarkable performing skills.

Although he was an autodidact on many instruments, his main instrument was the flute traversière which he played left-handed. His compositions mix both Italian and French styles. Formally, his sonatas are suites and often have programmatic titles. The sonata op. 2 No. 4 is also called La Lumague“. Marie de Lumague (1599–1657) founded the Caritas movement in France during the reign of Louis XIII. It is assumed that both this woman and her work inspired Blavet to write this beautiful sonata.

English Horn,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1082622 Composed by Giuseppe Sammartini (1695-1750). Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Classical,Contest,Festival,Standards,Wedding. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #686830. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1082622). Sammartini Op. 1 No. 2 Sonata. Score: 6 pages. Duration: 8:13 I. Andante II. Allegro III. Minuet/GraziosoGiuseppe Sammartini's Sonatas Op. 1 was composed in the early 18th century. Sammartini, an Italian composer, was known for his instrumental works, particularly for the flute, recorder, and oboe. He dedicated his 12 sonatas Op. 1 to Frederick, indicating his attachment to the family he worked for. Most of Sammartini's chamber music was regularly performed and republished during his lifetime, highlighting the significance of his works in the Baroque era. The historical context of these sonatas is rooted in the Baroque period, during which the sonata form and chamber music flourished.Sammartini is considered a formative influence on the preclassical symphony and the development of the Classical style. His approach to symphonic composition was unique, drawing influence from the trio sonata and deviating from the Italian overture model. His symphonies were driven by rhythm and more precise forms, reflecting a mixture of Baroque and Preclassical forms and anticipating the direction of classical music, such as the Sturm und Drang style. He composed around 70 symphonies and is praised for his innovations in the development of the symphony, which have contributed to the development of the Classical style.
