Originally written for a small orchestra it Is arranged here for double wind quintet and bass.George Butterworth (1885-1916) was perhaps the most gifted of the British composers who were killed in the First World War. The Two English Idylls of 1910-1911 is his first surviving orchestral work and was first performed in Oxford in 1912. The delicacy and skill of his orchestration distinguish these folk song-based rhapsodies. In the first, three tunes are used, Dabbling in the dew, Just as the tide was flowing and the lively Henry Martin. All were collected by Butterworth in Sussex. His 2 English Idylls are the prequel to his Third Idyll - The Banks of Green Willow, which is perhaps his best known piece.I have an arrangement of that piece for wind quintet.

The mental image of a small and lonely chapel in the river valley at the base of a windswept hillside inspired the melodies around which the idyll was shaped - Ernest Tomlinson One of Tomlinson's last compositional works, Chadkirk Idyll was commissioned in 2002 as a duet for recorder and guitar, and shortly afterwards rescored for recorder and string quartet. That version has been used to create this arrangement for solo flute and low flute quartet. The piece is also available for the more usual combination of flute and piano.

The Banks of Green Willow The original is a short orchestral piece by George Butterworth, probably the most played of his three works for orchestra. It has certainly been his most recorded orchestral work. Described by its composer as an Idyll, and written in 1913, it is scored for a small orchestra consisting of two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, one trumpet, harp and strings.Butterworth based The Banks of Green Willow on two folk song melodies that he noted in 1907 - The Banks of Green Willow and Green bushes. This popular piece is often used on TV in programmes with wholesome panoramic views of the British countryside. It has a relaxing pastoral English feel to it.This arrangement is in the original key so requires 2 clarinets in A. The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and AntonÃn Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan KubelÃk played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

The fact that the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) is in the shadow of Smetana and Dvorák is totally unjustified because he, too, was instrumental in the foundation of the Czech national school. His best-known work is probably the subsidiary theme from his symphonic poem 'At Twilight' which has become famous under the name of 'Poème'. The violinist Jan KubelÃk played this tune under this title since 1908, and as such the work has become known and, with its catchy charm, is now one of the most popular classical themes.
