Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1284511). “Crossing Jordan†grew out of my daughter Kiana’s surprise request that I arrange a spiritual for voice, piano and cello for her senior recital. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)).

The Maid of the Mist in an arrangement for solo Cornet (Trumpet, Flugel, Baritone, Euphonium TC) & Wind Dectet of a fun light piece creating a great showpiece for the cornet. It is named after the sight-seeing boats for tourists in Niagara Falls. Set as a polka, there is much opportunity for the soloist to display quick fingers and light triple tonguing.To create a clean new edition, dynamics and articulations were made more consistent in the parts. Counter melodies were added to enhance the arrangement.American composer and Cornet player Herbert L. Clarke was one of the first soloists to combine a pyrotechnic technique with a lush, romantic sound. His virtuoso-with-a-heart' style set the standard for Cornet (and later Trumpet) players for the next several generations. He, along with Jean Baptiste Arban and Frank Simon, is considered to be one of the finest Cornetists in history. Many of Clarke's compositions are still regularly performed, including: 'The Maid of the Mist', 'Sounds of the Hudson', 'The Bride of the Waves', 'Stars in a Velvety Sky', 'From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific', 'The Debutante and Southern Cross'. 'The Maid of the Mist' was composed ca. 1912 and is one of about 50 pieces Clarke wrote to display his virtuosity in concerts. 'Maid of the Mist' is the name of a tourist boat that visitors to Niagara Falls can ride to view the falls up-close.

It has been categorised as ‘advanced’, as the length and tempo of the work make it quite challenging. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day. It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This arrangement was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.

Published by JohnWillard Utuk (A0.1257964). The High Priestess is a chamber work for mixed instrumentation, including an F Horn with piano, violin, and flute. This piece is inspired by the artwork of the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, specifically the less credited illustrator of the world famous deck, Pamela Colman Smith. The music represents the symbolism and feeling behind the High Priestess card, with keywords of strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust. Each instrument is featured throughout, as the main melody and distinct rhythms are traded and dovetailed around the ensemble. The piece begins with a feeling of watery calm (e.g. Venetian Boat songs), ascends to a hopeful journey, moves through tense trials, then returning back to the distant flute melody, followed by a piano “solo†that ultimately inspired this chamber work in the first place. This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional ensembles, as well as very advanced young chamber players looking for something new and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. In performance, be mindful of balance issues, so seating arrangement can be adjusted. I recommend the horn player be seated on the outside, so as not to cover up the flute. Average performance time: ca. 4:30Other instrumentations are in progress, so please check back for updated editions. The original instrumentation involved the oboe and cello. Canon In D - Johann Pachelbel - Euphonium Trio (Treble Clef), Keyboatd - Advanced/Intermediate - .Johann Pachelebel's celebrated Canon in D is perhaps the most famous canon ever written. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D was originally scored for three violins arranged in canon accompanied by a basso continuo playing an ostinato pattern, repeating the same harmonic progression throughhout the entire composition.Regis Bookshar has now arranged this composition for a Euphonium Trio, written in Treble Clef, which play the melody in canon and a Keyboard instrument, either a Piano or Organ, which plays the ostinato pattern. Another version, with the Euphoniums written in Bass Clef, is also available, if you would prefer. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students as is perfect for concerts, recitals and church services, especially for weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (22 pages).This version of Pachelbel's Canon in D is written in the key of D Major, as was the original version. However, another version, transposed to the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, especially brass and woodwind players, is also available, if you would prefer. It has been used in film and television programs (notably the TV series Outlander) and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.   The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.   In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The woodwind parts avoid technical challenges and the piano part is fairly easy. This beautiful folk song would make a spendid addition to your repertoire and aso make a pleasant encore number after a classical recital.

Smith Island Boat Song expresses the roots music side of my writing. It is a ballad that draws upon Scottish fiddle traditions and has subtle modern touches. The music was Inspired by Smith Island in the Chesapeake Bay. The non-traditional aspects include moving triads over a pedal point used throughout the tune and Lydian harmony (F triad over Eb) in the B section. The AABBCA form is unusual. The music builds slowly, starting gently in A and progressively building in B. The C section is the dramatic high point of the piece. Then, it tapers back down in the final A section. An arrangement of Mendelsshon's Venetian Boat Song for flute and classical guitar, from his collection of Songs Without Words.This was originally written in the key of G minor and my arrangement has the flute line in that key, and the guitar in E minor. The guitarist must use a capo at the third fret to bring the guitar part to the same key as the flute. Even though this is scored for flute and guitar, the melody line could be played by an oboe or a violin.
