A trio for alto saxophone, vibraphone and piano, Hermes in Retrograde was written for and premiered by Marshall Taylor, Christopher Hanning, and Sam Hsu. The soundworld is influenced by 50s Jazz and the metrical world of the piece comes from my interests in the music of the ars subtilior, which I was peforming quite a lot of at that time. The titles of the work are heavily influenced by my readings in Hermetic philosophy, especially the studies by Frances Yates. If anything, this work is a synchretic mashup of a cool jazz aesthetic that never was and a world of ideas that doesn't truly exist, creating a surreal landscape.Parts for the sax and vibes are included.

Mirage Sextet is a single movement work, and is scored for a mixed chamber ensemble of clarinet (in A), bassoon, piano, violin, viola and cello. The work focuses on an exploration of the octatonic scale on C, in the semitone-tone variant. The piece has a loose ternary feel, as the outer sections present primary material and main themes that recur. Meanwhile, a middle section offers some contrast in a succession of mini cadenza-style solos for most of the instruments. The work develops 20th century folk-influenced idioms, such as those of Bartok, Kodaly, early Lutoslawski and Ligeti, as well as Stravinsky, Shostakovich and perhaps even Messiaen. The main compositional interests are: changing, as well as irregular, time signatures; the aforementioned octatonic scale to create folk-like motifs and melodies, added-note harmonies (with the importance of the augmented fourth interval); and percussive doublings of instruments in their lower (gritty/folky) registers, in octaves, as well as liberal actual doubling by the piano. The work is generally accessible to performers and audience. Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

Be sure to check out my first euphonium quartet Beacons (2014).No Longer at Ease is a stand-alone euphonium quartet inspired by Chinua Achebe’s 1960 novel of the same name. In Achebe’s novel a young man is sent to University by his village’s elders in the hopes he will return able to guide and protect his people through uncertain and unwanted colonialist developments. However, the man abandons their plans to pursue his own interests and faces the fallout of his actions upon his return home and in the volatile years to come. Reading such an affective work in the final semester of my Masters preparing to return home was timely and I have found the similarities between my life and Achebe’s art blurred. I began writing this work upon returning home to Niceville, Florida and realizing that both myself and the town I call home have changed drastically.     The piece begins with jarring sixteenth-notes derived from a rising arpeggiated-tetrachord. Ceaseless double tonguing, the lead in the fourth euphonium, and unsettling metric shifts combine for unique and frenetic effects. A yearning melody enters amidst this chaos and is a musical spelling of “homeâ€. The return and developments of the frenetic material culminates in a solo statement of this theme. The middle section represents the home of years past and features a uniquely Niceville quote with fragments of the Niceville High School fight song. These fragments make up each independent line and the music culminates in a triumphant victory. However, this victory is cut brief by the cutting sixteenth-note driven material from earlier. The finale is an exciting mockery of the “home†theme with interjections and exploitations of all previous themes. - Matthew NunesNiceville, June 2018.

The text was written by poet, Johann Mayrohfer, Schubert’s fellow Austrian and close friend, and the lyrics describe the experience of sitting beside a lake at sunset. This guitar arrangement is written in E major in the interests of playability, but it can be performed in Schubert’s original key of F major by placing a capo on the first fret, or in the transposition for low voice by detuning the guitar a tone. Bars 4-11 should be played in a languid, lilting manner to represent the mind-set of the protagonist sitting beside the lake. This mood should be imbued with a hint of foreboding at bar 12, before returning to its former lilting tranquillity at bar 18. The opening phrase should combine these two moods, if possible. The vocal line is echoed in the guitar part in bars 19-24; these phrases should be performed with great delicacy so that they reflect the voice. The middle section, which begins at bar 29, should be played slightly faster than the previous sections, and with a brighter feel. The accompanist needs to set up the transition back to the original tempo in bar 77, after which, the same languid, lilting playing style as the first verse should be applied.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

Italian.The choice of 16th century texts, by Bronzino and Battiferri, reflects the interests of the dedicatee of these sonnets - Craig Hugh Smyth, a fine art historian and former director of the Villa I Tatti, who was a specialist in Bronzino and Pontormo. Bronzino's sonnet is a lament on the death of Pontormo, his teacher; Laura Battiferri's poem is a direct response to that of Bronzino. As I was also asked to set sonnets by Petrarca, I chose two of his closely linked sonnets, numbers 229 and 230 in the Rime Sparse. I had written a work for I Tatti some five years earlier setting Petrarca (A qualunque animale, the first in my Fourth Book of Madrigals) and was familiar with the context. However, through correspondence with Kathryn Bosi, Music Librarian at I Tatti and, through her, Craig Smyth's family, I became increasingly aware of his unusual and quite special character. From his undergraduate days at Princeton and indeed throughout his life, although a great scholar and writer, he was at the same time an aficionado of jazz, loving above all Louis Armstrong, being photographed with Duke Ellington, taking his children to see Thelonious Monk, listening to Ben Webster and playing the tenor saxophone himself. Indeed, he had told Kathryn Bosi that he had been proud to walk in procession at the funerals of black musicians in New Orleans. In some ways his life was almost an obverse mirror image of parts of my own - I was a professional jazz musician but found myself teaching art history for a time. As Fiorella Superbi of I Tatti has said: Craig was a maestro di vita. I raise a glass in his memory and dedicate these sonnets to him. Gavin Bryars.
