Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie BossI didn't have a minimum copy, so you can make copies of this. When guitarist John Olson and soprano Gioia De Cari commissioned me to write a piece for them, I envi- sioned writing something theatrical that might especially suit Gioia, who is both a singer and an actress. Eventually, I thought of Mark Twain. The great American writer and humorist of substance wrote a short, little-known book called The Diary of Adam and Eve, which is, of course, about the first days of human life on this earth, in Twain’s witty, but touching take on the Bible story. Adam and Eve each write diary entries. I chose several passages from Eve’s diary that convey the sense of constant wonder that she felt because absolutely everything in her world was new.Setting prose, rather than poetry, is a challenge for a composer because it has neither the innate rhythm nor the lyricism of poetry. On some intuitive level, this challenge led me to a process that allowed the music to evolve mostly from the guitar part. Whereas normally the vocal melody might emerge first, motivated by the text and with the accompaniment then added for support, here the guitar part was the prime mover. An example of this is the last song, which is a passacaglia played by the guitar, providing the ground over which the vocal line can soar. Eve’s Diary was composed in 2015.Lorsque le guitariste John Olson et la soprano Gioia De Cari m'ont commandé une pièce pour eux, j'ai imaginé écrire quelque chose de théâtral qui pourrait particulièrement convenir à Gioia, qui est à la fois chanteuse et actrice. Finalement, j'ai pensé à Mark Twain. Le grand écrivain et humoriste américain a écrit un petit livre peu connu intitulé Le Journal d'Adam et Ève, qui raconte les premiers jours de la vie humaine sur terre selon l'interprétation spirituelle et espiègle de Twain de l'histoire biblique. Adam et Ève tiennent chacun un journal. J'ai choisi plusieurs passages du journal d'Ève qui expriment ce sentiment d'émerveillement constant qu'elle ressentait, car absolument tout dans son monde était nouveau.Mettre en musique de la prose, plutôt que de la poésie, est un défi pour un compositeur car elle n'a ni le rythme inné ni le lyrisme de la poésie. It was written for tenor, but given its accessible range (Db4 to G5 in the original key), it would work well for lighter voices in many fachs, including light lyric sopranos, baritones, and mezzos. The text, translated from a poem by Takuboku Ishikawa (1886-1912), is gender-neutral. This would be a great introduction to new music for an undergraduate singer with strong aural skills and a still-light voice (since young dramatics might overpower the harp).If you'd like to talk about commissioning a transposed score, please get in touch! Currently a PhD candidate in music theory at Indiana University, she recently completed a doctoral minor in composition, having studied with Claude Baker, Don Freund, P. Q. Phan, and David Schneider. She also holds a B.Mus. from the University of Michigan, where she studied composition with Bright Sheng and piano with Louis Nagel. Nicole's music has been heard across the world: along with numerous performances in the Midwest, her commissioned song settings of Muscogee poet laureate Alexander Posey's texts have been performed at Shorter College (GA) and Lincoln University (PA), and the Smithsonian Institution procured copies of two of these (Nature's Blessings and A Vision) to archive at the National Museum of the American Indian. Additionally, Nicole's viola duo Three Episodes was featured at Ball State University's 40th Annual New Music Festival in February 2010. Her early compositions have been garnering interest as well: music students in Kenya performed several of Nicole's such pieces in May 2013 through a pedagogical project spearheaded by IU faculty member Kimberly Carballo. Nicole's music also received its Mexican premiere in October 2013 with a performance of her Divertimento, written for the International String Quartet of Yucatán. In 2014, Nicole published a set of twenty short pedagogical pieces in uncommon keys, entitled Venturing Beyond, available on SheetMusicPlus. Also a sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Nicole frequently judges regional and divisional MTNA composition competitions at all levels, ranging from elementary to college-level Young Artists, and she also served as the composition department chair at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in 2014. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star.  The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where   Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see.  This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an ST duet with SATB choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir.  I hope you enjoy singing and listening to this cantata—Connie Boss.

Its sounds just as good without the Bass part and therefore could be easily managed by an all female choir. The chorus section goes quite low, so it's probably not suitable for children's voices. I have added the individual vocal parts to the end of the score, so you can save on printing costs should you wish to do so. I recorded the demo with the backing track from Karaoke Version. Have a listen using the video link below...it's just a bit different and quite nostalgic in feeling.

It will need at least a 1st section band to handle the last movement. This might be a good piece to use in an entertainments contest. There is quite a bit for the percussion to do which took some doing as the original had none. The four movements represent my thoughts about Canada and its people. 1. March for the Frontiersmen: Canada has a lot of wilderness that has not been spoiled by man. This movement represents the rugged frontiersmen pushing through the Canadian forests. 2. The Great White Cold: I imagined the bitter freezing cold and icy beauty of Canadian winters (not that I have ever experienced such) and I used some slightly unusual techniques to create the impression of a cold wind blowing across the arctic scenery. 3. Campfire Songs: I had this vision of the great outdoors with Canadian families going camping in the mountainous regions sitting round their campfire at night and singing songs. I had no idea at the time whether Canadians were campfire songsters or what kinds of songs they might choose, so I selected a number of ’folk’ songs from the Great Canadian Tune Book and incorporated them into this movement. 4. The New Found Land: This movement moves to Canada’s eastern seaboard and I imagined new emigrants to the country arriving at a busy harbour and seeing all the hustle and bustle of a lively community and sea port. With some difficulty the debarkees find their land legs but then become absorbed in the lively new world to which they have moved.

Published by Jasper Swank (A0.1375374). “This series of 10 short pieces was made as a stub for filling the absence of multi-part kazoo pieces. According to the composer, the classical world has been acting deprecatory towards new instruments. First, the clarinet, then the saxophone, and still many more are not accepted by conservative listeners. It’s time that people start to discover the beauty of new timbres, giving traditional settings and forms new entertaining context. Swunk believes himself the chosen advocate to bring instruments like the otamatone, the stroh violin, jazz harpsichord, the turkey, and, yes, the kazoo to the classical audience.â€These words were stated under the pseudonym Funky Swunk at the online premiere of a selection of these pieces as performed by members of the Untitled Virtual Ensemble. After this premiere, an extra piece was added (â…¨. Bonus Track), making the suite a nice uneven 11 short pieces.The goal of this collection of pieces is in part to show that the kazoo can in fact be used for a new sound in a classical setting. A well-written piece will still sound as such, regardless of the instruments used. However, the main aspect of performing either a selection of these pieces (in any order) or the suite as a whole should be the fun in performing. Of course, this shouldn’t be at the cost of the musical quality, but I do wholeheartedly hope these pieces bring as much joy to the musicians and any audience as it brought me while composing them.Included in package • Full Score with introduction.

As I sat one morning by the water, I noticed the sunlight twinkling and sparkling as it reflected off of it. It was so peaceful and beautiful. I wondered about a song that I might reference it. I decided to compose a lullaby for a mother singing to her baby. I think of eyes that twinkle and sparkle and your child definitely has eyes that reflect that.
