This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: â??La Cucarachaâ?, â??Cielito Lindoâ?, â??De Coloresâ?, and â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?, all available here.

The melody and lyrics are like the original as far as I can tell, but I did make changes to the harmony. Usually these changes to the harmony are to enhance the word painting, or to have it be more idiomatic to guitar. A version like this is ideal for someone who wants to play a very fancy version of the song on solo guitar, though adding vocals in should still be fairly easy. I personally sing a lot better if I can play the melody first on guitar because then I know exactly what I'm doing. Versions like these can really be as simple or as complex as you want, if you want something simple, just play the chord diagrams and sing!1. Guitar Arrangement Lead Sheet Style2. Guitar Tab 3. Chord Charts 4. Less stereotypical chords 5. Fingerings and letter names added to aid in sight-reading 6. Voice leading considerations 7. Making the music idiomatic for guitarTips:1. Notes with the stem direction going down are background harmonies that should be played quietly. This hidden meaning tends to only happen with polyphonic instruments such as piano and guitar. You'll eventually notice this anyways because there is no lyric underneath the note.1. Slurs are notated to the make the music easier and better sounding for guitar not vocals, though of course it often mimicks slurs similiar to a vocalist.2. Fmaj7(#11) is not in the original and is a key change since it includes an F and not an F#.3. Sometimes it can look like the melody does not contain a key change, but then when you anaylze the letter names of the chords, you will find that there is indeed key changes in the chords. The Beatles is a good example of a band that does this often.4. E minor and G major chords technically only need 2 or 3 notes. This is one simple but effective strategy to have less cliche chords.5. The F(#5)(#11) chord in the second to last measure could probably be just an F major chord.6. The E natural in measure 42 could be an Eb if the harmony is too avant-garde for you. Made sense to me because of word painting and I wanted a keyless and dreamy feeling for the end. 7. G/B chords are arguably nicer than a full G chord, though of course the decision is ultimately up to. It is better because the chord is imperfect, it causes the audience to not clap too soon. I also only strum the chord up to where the vocal melody is happening, that way the main melody is always in the spot light, and I find songs are easier to sing this way.

This is a Basie Style chart It is meant to swing and not to just to show off technique. The structure is 12 bar blues. It can be opened for solos,there is a 2nd trumpet solo with backgrounds. This is a relaxed chart with Basie Klinks at all the right spots...all written out The ending is a series of tags, first one soft last one fffff with Basis Klinksat the end. The bass part must be played as written because every note is a part of what is happening in the rest of the band. If the bass line is cluttered it won’t swing. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike

These two dances are taken from a collection entitled Recueil de danseries, contenant presque toutes sortes de danses (“Collection of dances, containing almost every kind of dancesâ€) published in Antwerp in 1583 by Pierre Phalèse Jnr (c.1545-1629). He was continuing the work of his father Pierre Phalèse the Elder (1510-1575) the most important publisher in the Low Countries during the 16th century. The piece known as Ungaresca evokes the atmosphere of street music rather than that of the court and the drone accompaniment that Phalèse provides suggests the sound of the peasant bagpipes. As the name implies, the dance came from Hungary though it may have simply been a dance in the Hungarian style. Even so, the melody was tremendously popular during the fifteenth century though the author is unknown. The dance calls for a lively performance, and you can use plenty of percussion to enliven it. This music was meant for dancing and entertainment and musicians would often combine several dances to make a more substantial piece. In this arrangement, the rather wild Ungaresca is paired with the stately Almande Poussinghe. The music would have been played by any instruments that happened to be available. The dances still retain their freshness and charm today and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting various instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic than a piano. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used (but feel free to add more) and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

A digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic than a piano. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used (but feel free to add more) and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

I wanted to write something based on a mediaeval mystery play and happened across an 11th Century version of the play of the Bridegroom – the tale of the wise and the foolish virgins. It was called Sponsus and is the oldest of this type of play written in both the vernacular and in Latin. What is even more extraordinary is that it is, in fact, a trilingual text in Latin, langue d'oc, and some words in the langue d'oïl. The passage which I have set is in langue d'oc, but for ease of singing I used a modern-French translation. This is scored for soprano, baroque violin, and viola da gamba. It can be performed at 415 or 440 ad libertum.I am very taken by the patchwork nature of mystery plays which is part promenade, part liturgy, part staged, part audience participation. I hope that having set a straightforwardly strophic text and using instruments more often heard in Early Music, jigsaws well with the more modern angular and sometimes dissonant nature of the melodic lines of this piece. I love the play of languages, and the mixing up through words and music of past, present, and future, revealing that time is perhaps a circuitous exploration rather than a strictly linear trajectory. And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time..

That was what I’ve been asking myself for years when I read the text Stabat Mater. This composition tells about this experience and this questions. Sometimes a motif tells quite literally about this story, like the moment when Jesus is nailed down the cross: first the right hand, then the left hand and finaly with one nail both feet. In the first part of the composition, the viola tells with sforzato accents about this.This Stabat Mater is not only an expression of the pain of the Virgin Mother, but is also a tribute to JS Bach as well. Bach is by some seen as a fith evangelist. Nowadays there are still a lot of people who are affected by how his music tells about biblical stories, like I am. In this Stabat Mater I use the number 5 to express that: the first part is written in 5/4th and the last part Quando corpus et Amen is written with 5 parts in the choir. There can also be found a reworked choral in the choir passages of  O quam tristis et afflicta. It is the choral Wie nahe mir mein Ende from BWV 166.Polyfony is a returning presence in this Stabat Mater. I had an visual idea about this. When I was young I saw in an exhibition a tapestry with all kinds of colours and threads, and everything felt in motion. It was a kind of organized mess, but it was beautiful and felt perfect. I wondered if I could manage to express this idea in music as well. Under one of the polyphonic passages there is a Latin-American dance rhythm to express that motion. I heard that rhythm in my childhood in a rhythmbox of the keyboard of my dad. Another passage has the baroque sarabande-rhythme underneath in the double bass.A lullaby-feeling in some parts of the Stabat Mater tells about another story that got intertwined with this composition. It’s the story of a mother who rocks her terminal dying little son in her arms. I once read that story and it felt connected with the Stabat Mater text for a long time. I decided to express that as well.This composition is dedicated to the Dutch conductor Geert van den Dungen. However I saw many conductors, while playing the oboe and clarinet from a young age, there was nobody who let me think very deeply about music. Geert was the one who changed that for me. I started to study scores and developed a great interest in music analysis and music psychology. Many moments of inspiration and understanding for this Stabat Mater happened on choir rehearsals and concerts where Geert was working. TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME (Supertramp) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This is an arrangement for 4 guitars (or a large ensemble) of Supertramp’s 'Take The Long Way Home'.The original is nothing less than spectacular, running for a full 5 minutes with verse, chorus and instrumental breaks, and utilising rich orchestration and texture. I’ve captured all of the material in my arrangement, changing the key just slightly so that the shapes and melody are comfortable, and simplifying one or two non-guitar-friendly progressions in the breaks. The bass-line and harmony are close to the original. Guitar 4 could be played an octave lower on a contra guitar, although I’ve used subharmonics in the opening to give the illusion of a deeper bass than a guitar can manage.In order to make the piece music-stand-friendly, I’ve needed to use repeat marks meaning that the second verse has the same bass-line as the first, but a simple change in volume will provide a suitable feeling of building as the piece progresses. The opening section needs to imitate the indefinite sustain of high-pitched violins. By using harmonics across all four parts, and interleaving the repetitions, we can get a convincing sustain (or plucking at random times across the parts, or even a tremolo would also create the illusion of indefinite sustain). But if it doesn’t work in your ensemble, simply start the piece at A and omit all harmonics from that point onwards.My arrangement will suit an intermediate ensemble. Parts 3 and 4 are slightly easier, but skilled players on these lines can make magic happen by a confident use of articulation to shape the music’s texture.I hope you enjoy performing this!

Staines MorrisThe song, Staines Morris, is very well known by singers of traditional songs. It’s a 17th century song. It’s a 19th century song. Actually, it’s both! The lyrics were certainly published, and probably written, by Robert Cox for his play Actaeon and Diana, published in 1656. The tune was first published in John Playford’s The English Dancing Master in 1651. There is no evidence that, in the 17th century, the lyrics were sung to this melody. That didn’t happen for two hundred years, when William Chappell put the two together for his Popular Music of the Olden Time, vol. 1 (1859). I have added chords to the melody. Whilst humming the tune to myself, I found myself moving into 6/8 time, and that inspired me to compose a galliard based on it, complete with ‘divisions’ (runs of semiquavers or 32nd notes) and counterpoint. The song melody and the galliard can be played separately or as parts of one piece, perhaps with the galliard played between two of the verses. I put the galliard in A minor, to provide a contrast with the D minor song melody, but play them in whatever key takes your fancy.
