In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage. Therefore it can be used instrumentally or if required, there is a number in the score of which, although the guitar has a melody and one of the choral voices, with two guitars, or make two choral voices or join with your own melody, use both bowed string instruments and plucked strings, etc.Likewise, there are two voices, of which a single voice can use the phrasings of both one voice and the other, giving it its own personality.The tempo will be whatever the interpretation itself wants, much slower, without accelerating so much between the beginning and the moment of the song itself. I have incorporated some instruments into the arrangement as examples:Buzukibouzouki, like the sazturco and the Lebanese Buzuq, which belong to the same family of Buzuki instruments.And as percussion only percussion The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument The Turkish Darbuka is a percussion musical instrument from Turkey. The Turkish Darbuka have a high range of low and high resonant tones that sound between the two registers; serious (Dum) and acute (Tek). The edge or lip allows for finger breaking techniques that are not possible in the Egyptian Darbuka.And the Tombak, also called Dombak Ozarb, is a chalice-shaped drum, traditionally built with a hollowed-out biker or walnut trunk covered with skin at one end.With the beginning and among the work itself I wanted to give place to the Bashraf (Turkish Pesrev and Persian Pishraw, which means Overture) and the Sama'i (Turkish Sam Semai) Instrumental genre that is used in the Turkish court and in Sufi music . They were introduced into the Arab world before the 19th century.And also give place in his forms to the Ottoman composer Ismail Hakkibei (1866-1927). Published by Lux Novus (A0.1022791). Trio plays with a simple idea that is first stated in the opening measures and repeated in various ways throughout. After a moderate introduction that lasts for about one and a half minutes, the cello enters with the first theme. What is unique, and somewhat unconventional, about this largely disjunct theme is that it is performed almost entirely pizzicato, creating a pleasant and relaxing groove between the cello and piano. The pizzicato cello theme is in two parts, interrupted by a short, syncopated statement by all.There is a slow section in the middle of the piece, one that is to be played freely by the cello and clarinet, not constricted by meter, and written in a minor mode. This is in stark contrast to a piece that is otherwise very lively and high-spirited. Following this slow section, the performers softly come back with the simple idea at its original tempo and soon fall into a steady groove that features virtuosic figures in the clarinet. There is a steady rise in dynamics and harmonic rhythm from this point to the end of the piece. It ends on a high note; no pun intended.The piece has a jazzy quality overall. I grew up listening to composers like Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber and performers like Wynton Marsalis and Jaco Pastorius. Although the notes now inhabit their permanent place on the page, It is my hope that they reflect the improvisatory nature in which the piece was composed. ~ Christian Martin.

I wanted to write something based on a mediaeval mystery play and happened across an 11th Century version of the play of the Bridegroom – the tale of the wise and the foolish virgins. It was called Sponsus and is the oldest of this type of play written in both the vernacular and in Latin. What is even more extraordinary is that it is, in fact, a trilingual text in Latin, langue d'oc, and some words in the langue d'oïl. The passage which I have set is in langue d'oc, but for ease of singing I used a modern-French translation. This is scored for soprano, baroque violin, and viola da gamba. It can be performed at 415 or 440 ad libertum.I am very taken by the patchwork nature of mystery plays which is part promenade, part liturgy, part staged, part audience participation. I hope that having set a straightforwardly strophic text and using instruments more often heard in Early Music, jigsaws well with the more modern angular and sometimes dissonant nature of the melodic lines of this piece. I love the play of languages, and the mixing up through words and music of past, present, and future, revealing that time is perhaps a circuitous exploration rather than a strictly linear trajectory. And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time..

An ever so slightly 'tongue in cheek' humorous version of this work from Handel's 'Messiah'. It uses a quartet of soloists including Solo Cornet, Tenor Horn, Euphonium and EE Bass. The piece is suitable for Christmas concerts, and indeed the major work is normally performed at this festive time. The cymbals player stands with his cymbals at the ready throughout the whole piece but doesn't actually get to play them..! The trombones get a laugh too. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. The piece was commissioned for the Eroica Trio by a noted patron for music, Kathryn Gould of Palo Alto, California. The world premiere took place at the Montalvo Chamber Music Series in California, March 5th, 2004. In a letter to the members of the trio dated 9/20/03, Mr. O’Connor lays out his plan for the new music.My initial ideas have sort of exploded in to the entire concept of the music with a real impact actually. Now I am piecing together the parts of it and then will eventually work on detail as I get the overall form under wrap. Here is what my inspiration for the music is; Johnny Cash.Johnny was a boyhood hero of mine, I used to sing his songs when I was 8, 9 and 10 years old, and played the guitar like him (sometimes up the fretboard strumming away). My mom used to help me transcribe all the lyrics off the albums, she also thought he hung the moon. As you can imagine, the passing of Cash for me this last week has been emotional. I am at my very best when I compose with my emotions at my sleeve, and guess what, it is time to do the Eroica piece. And I believe I will be able to craft a very unique tribute in to the form of a Piano Trio. There is something that is very fitting in all of this though. Cash was one of the few country music and rockabilly musicians to appeal to all ages, all types of people all the way into the MTV generation which is something that is hard to fathom. That one person can move musical mountains with his charisma and his voice. He sung about the prisons, riding the trains, about killing, and living, about lost love, about the gospel, about the downtrodden and the Native American, and about being stoned. His musical sound was the thing that got everybody though. He developed along with his guitar player Luther Perkins, a new and vibrant way to bring the music out.I also knew Johnny and worked with him, visited him privately at his home. Johnny also appeared on my album called Heroes, where he brought back the great story of the Devil coming down to Georgia to challenge young Johnny for the golden fiddle. My job now is to bridge what I am feeling about my inspiration for Cash, and bring it in to the instruments that I love writing for.I might not have imagined that this Johnny Cash concept would have worked out of hand, if it hadn’t been for your musicianship, insight fullness and graceful approaches in to the details of musical concepts and style. If the piece is good, then I will have no doubt that you will bring it to the forefront so others can grasp the intentions of the work, and in addition for others to enjoy playing it after you have brought it all out in to the open, and gave it a life. The movements are: 1 - Marie for shame, a sprightly number encouraging Marie to get out of bed and enjoy the day. It is inspired by the poem Marie vous estes paresseuse by Ronsard. 2 - Nocturne represents Marie going back to sleep! This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to the Dance Masters which presented 44 of my favourite Renaissance Dance band tunes and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited 22 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. Sometime around the 1500s, the popularity of dance music exploded in Europe. Dance Masters were collecting chansons and dance tunes from courts and rural parts and were teaching these to new audiences, spreading their arrangements and reflecting the performance styles of the areas from which they had collected the tunes. Publishers were able to take these tunes that were becoming known across the regions and nations and spread them even more widely, thanks to technological innovations in music printing which made it quicker and therefore cheaper to produce collections of these dances in four or more parts. These publishers were often highly accomplished composers in their own right, who were both able to provide distinctive harmony lines and compose new tunes in the style of their sources, feeding the courts with enduring tunes. Composers and printers of this time would often use note values that are double the length of those we would be used to seeing today, and so to make this version more readable, breves have become semibreves or whole notes, semibreves have become minims or half notes and so on. Working with this publication For those just starting out in Early Music, the volume is an ideal introduction, since the ensemble can build from a soloist with accompaniment with the chords alone, and parts can be added in as additional musicians become available. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints.
