Der Leiermann (The Organ Grinder)This is the final song in Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle, and tells the story of a poet encountering a hurdy-gurdy player busking in the snow. An atmosphere of absolute bleakness and despair should be conjured up by any performance of this song, as the song’s main character completes his lonely ‘winter’s journey’ and deterioration of his mental state. The chromatic grace notes in the introduction are supposed to represent the sound of a hurdy-gurdy being warmed up, and the open A string played thereafter is meant to evoke the hurdy-gurdy’s drone strings; so ensure it is allowed to ring clearly whilst playing the main figure on the higher strings. The guitar part is relatively simple, but it needs to be played with absolute precision and dynamic control; the extensive use of the open position allows the guitar’s natural resonance to come through. This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

Des Baches Weigenlied (The Brook’s Lullaby)This is the final song in Die Schöne Mullerin, and is a lullaby for the travelling miller as he drowns himself in the brook that he followed throughout his journey. The girl he was serenading in Morgengruss did not return his feelings and eventually fell in love with a hunter instead, which is why the miller chooses to commit suicide at the end of the story. Written in strophic form, this song is very repetitive and should be performed in a hypnotic and stately manner, in order to conjure up the image of the gently flowing water rocking the protagonist into an eternal sleep. Des Baches Wiegenlied serves the same role as Der Leiermann, and while they both provide a very bleak conclusion to a song cycle, Des Baches Wiegenlied should create a mood of peaceful sadness and sorrow, rather than the dark desolation of its Winterreise counterpart; it is, after all, a lullaby.This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.

The lyrics are drawn from a poem written by Goethe and can be interpreted as a metaphor for the trials and tribulations of life and love. Heidenröslein is a lighthearted song, and should be performed with joyous naivety and charm. The lighthearted spirit can be expressed further by experimenting with tempo variations, such as taking the second verse at a slower tempo than verses one and three, and adding a dramatic rallentando to the ‘Roslein, Roslein, Roslein roth!’ refrain, before accelerating into the final line of each verse. Andromaque, icy cold, rejects amorous advances from her captor Phyrrus. She plots her survival, trying desperately to save her infant son Astyanax from the Greek ambassador Oreste who would have her Trojan line finished off for good. The baby Astyanax sleeps silently, unaware of the deadly drama surrounding him. Does he nap peacefully? Or does he dream, like his mother, of revenge for the death of his conquered father, the great Trojan warrior king Hector? Phyrrus awkwardly tries to sweet-talk his captive Andromaque into marriage. She rejects him until he becomes furious and threatens to kill her son Astyanax unless she agrees to wed. Phyrrus alternates between threats and cajoling. Hermione loves Phyrrus, who decides to marry Andromaque instead. She rejects her own suitor Oreste, until she vengefully has him kill Phyrrus. Oreste does her bidding, only to be rewarded by a final rejection. She accuses Oreste of being a murderous monster. When Hermione sees the body of Phyrrus, she kills herself. The Greek soldier and ambassador Oreste sailed to Epire to persuade King Phyrrus to kill or hand over the infant Astyanax, last of the line of Troy. Oreste is torn between duty and love for usury Hermione. Her broken promises and final rejection affect him profoundly. Oreste goes insane upon learning of her death.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775995). Viola Quintet (Unquiet Parables) (2009) was commissioned by the Vienna Soloists and is dedicated to Jack Melby and Jane Thompson. The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The starting point for the music is dissonant cadential figuration centered on Ab (taken from the voice leading of American colonial-era music). Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate a sonority formed from perfect 5ths one semitone apart. Irregular phrase lengths and cadences are used as the basis of the work’s large-scale structures. The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for the instruments in solo. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interrupted periodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet. The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody in turn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a re-articulation of the cadential figuration. The third movement, Ductia, is energetic and driving. A ductia is a Medieval stamping dance resembling the estampie. The driving (yet sometimes off-kilter) character of the dance is interrupted by a recollection of the first movement’s material. The final resolution of the extended cadential figurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.

It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra.
