Published by Bud Caputo (A0.826732). On Green Dolphin Street is a jazz classic popularized by Mile Davis but originating in the movie of 1947, with Lana Turner and Van Heflin. Two styles are presented in the head, a Latin style, with straight eight notes, is followed by the swinging eight note style. Therefore, students will need to understand how to execute the two different bowing styles. Chord changes are placed in all parts at the jazz solo section, or the director may choose to use a written out solo that is provided for a solo violinist. A Scale Study Sheet is provided to assist students and guide them to possible note selections for each chord in the 32 bars, as is typically done in Jamey Abersold’s pedagogy. A Violin 3 part is included to bolster the Viola section, and a single amplified jazz bass may be more desirable than using the entire contrabass section. However, for thejazz solo choruses, only one bass should be used throughout. Note: The YouTube Link below is a practice track to be used during class rehearsals . While studying with Emory Remington at the Eastman School, Wes would travel to Toronto to visit the city. On one visit in the early 70's he heard the famous Boss Brass. Ian McDougall's brilliant playing made such an impression on Wes that he promised himself he would write a work for him. While Professor of Trombone at Ball State University, Wes invited Ian to come for a Clinic/Concert and composed this work for him to perform. This work of about 6 minutes in length is for advanced performers & has improvised solos for 1st & Bass Trombones. The good old Blues never had it so good!!

The University Choir and band performed Desert Sea, along with other arrangements by Deborah. She then included her choral arrangement in her Master’s Thesis, which traced the history of Spirituals and Gospel songs and their influence on modern jazz. Deborah’s original arrangement of Desert Sea was modeled after a popular Christian artist at the time, Keith Green, with driving eighth notes throughout. (you can find it in the LBSU Archives!) The current updated arrangement has been re-worked, as it alternates between 3-4 and 4-4 time, feeling like 7-4. Deborah and her son, David, perform all the vocals on this recording. Deborah Johnson is not only a headliner artist, but speaker, author, composer and educator with a Master of Arts degree in composition and arranging. In the past years, she has been up for multiple Grammy Awards for her original songs, arrangements and albums. With over two dozen albums, hundreds of songs, three full-length original musicals with National Distribution and multiple books under her belt, these all make Deborah a part of a unique group of women entertainers and composers in the world.
