This is a Basie Style chart It is meant to swing and not to just to show off technique. The structure is 12 bar blues. It can be opened for solos,there is a 2nd trumpet solo with backgrounds. This is a relaxed chart with Basie Klinks at all the right spots...all written out The ending is a series of tags, first one soft last one fffff with Basis Klinksat the end. The bass part must be played as written because every note is a part of what is happening in the rest of the band. If the bass line is cluttered it won’t swing. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. One Last Bar Then Joe Can Sing (1994) was commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain for the percussion quintet Nexus, and is a reflection on aspects of percussion history, both personal and musical. The members of Nexus are my friends (I played in the Steve Reich Ensemble along with Russ Hartenberger in 1972, the year after Nexus was formed). The piece aimed to demonstrate how a fine percussion ensmeble can be as musically expressive and subtle as, say, a string quartet. The piece starts from the last bar at the end of the second act of my opera Medea, a very short coda for a quintet of untuned percussion instruments during which the curtain falls. In this piece, however, this one apparently innocuous measure is progressively fragmented until it is taken over, little by little, by the addition of tuned percussion instruments. Eventually two metallophones (crotales and songbells) play aria-like material with bows, occasionally joined by the xylophone, and accompanied by marimba and xylophone ostinati. The piece ends with a coda in which phrases are passed from bowed vibraphone to bowed crotales, then to bowed songbells, supported by tremolos on the marimbas. The rare 3-octave songbells that Nexus owns is one of the American instrument maker J. C. Deagan's particularly fine instruments. The piece is effectively a kind of homage to Deagan, the Stradivarius of the tuned percussion world, who collaborated closely with Percy Grainger in the development of tuned percussion music between the wars. The allusions in the title are obvious: the one last bar is the last measure of music from my opera; the song is that of Deagan's songbells. In the case of Joe I wanted to link my father, Joe Bryars (who was a good amateur baritone singer) with Joseph Deagan and his songbells. It appears on the Talking Book album along with Superstition. It was nominated for both Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and ultimately won the Grammy award for best male vocal, although there are other vocalists on the start of the track. The harmonies are both lush and jazzy and the melody line jumps around in the second section. Throughout the performance the rhythms need to be tight and precise, yet also with a laid back quality to the syncopations - don't rush! This arrangement is mostly in 3 parts apart from the coda, where the men can split into tenor and bass parts, and the piano accompaniment can be altered to suit, though an electric piano tone like the recording would work well. The arrangement would suit an intermediate mixed adult or school choir, and there is a vocal score included to help reduce the number of pages for the choir.

Consequently, like so many Avenged hits, it plays quite well as an instrumental cover and can be adapted to some interesting instrumentations beyond the original 2-guitar, bass, drums format in which it was recorded.Some years ago, I performed this tune with a 4-piece band on my college recital and it was an absolute blast! Whether out of sentimentality or just sheer boredom (I write this as we are right in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic and gigs are... scarce, to say the least), I decided to resurrect that arrangement and clean up my shorthand charts into some real parts so that you, too, might have the joy of bringing this hard rock anthem to life with your own ensemble.The purchase of this chart includes:- Fully notated parts for drum set, bass, & rhythm guitar- Fully notated Lead part that merges the brass, lead guitar, & vocal parts into one cohesive chart- Lyrics & vocal melodies notated on lead part (if using a vocalist)- Full transcription of Synyster Gates's original guitar solo! (printed on lead part)This arrangement can be performed by as few as 4 instrumentalists. My original performance was with electric violin, guitar, bass & drums, but with the updated Lead chart the violin could easily be replaced by keyboards, a second guitar, or any instrumentalist that can read at concert pitch.
