The first out of four movement of the work Liz And The Blue Bird arranged for woodwind ensemble.Liz And The Blue Bird is a four-movement work based on a fictional German fairytale from a movie, both of the same name. Liz is the name of a lonely girl who sells bread at a bakery and socializes with the forest animals. After a big thunderstorm, she finds an unnamed blue-haired girl lying outside. She quickly takes her into her home and, the two become close friends. After a while, Liz started noticing the girl sneaking out at night and coming back before dawn. Liz noticed how the girl would look at the birds freely flying in the sky when they fed the animals. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Although distraught by Liz's decision, the girl comes to respect it. The song was jointly written and performed by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. George Harrison and Ringo Starr took no part in the recording and there were no instrumental contributions by any of the Beatles. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl. The girl in question turned up safe and sound eventually, and had, by complete coincidence, met the Beatles at a TV recording a few year’s earlier.This version of She’s Leaving Home is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais. A box office hit, 'The Polar Express' tells the story of a young boy (named Hero Boy), who embarks upon a journey to the North Pole on a mysterious steam train on Christmas Eve, to visit Santa Claus. Once on board the train, the boy meets other children from various backgrounds who are all wanting to see Santa, as well as a magical train crew, headed by the Conductor. 'The Polar Express' stars Tom Hanks, providing voices and motion-capture for 6 characters, including the Conductor and Santa Claus. With an incredible original soundtrack from Hollywood legend Alan Silvestri, combined with other iconic Christmas recordings, 'The Polar Express' became an instant hit, and has embedded itself in Christmas popular culture.'When Christmas Comes To Town' is performed in the film by the characters Billy the Lonely Boy and Hero Girl, with singing voices provided by Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore, and tells the story of their differing perspectives of Christmas, with a shared desire to see Santa. This new arrangement from Matt Shaw is scored for two solo Tenor Horns with brass band accompaniment (including a tutti 2nd horn part), and captures all the magic and innocence of the original song, whilst being intentionally scored to be approachable and playable by bands of all levels. The solo lines are scored within a sensible range, and are supported by warm chords from the middle and lower band, with a continuous magical presence from the percussion writing. Originally arranged for, and performed by, the Wingates Brass Band, this arrangement promises to be a fantastic new addition to any band Christmas programme, as both a new and accessible feature and an instant crowd pleaser. It combines many of the subjects that fascinate me: the relationship of text narrative and musical narrative, the history of opera, early cinema, the theatrical practices of the nineteenth century, along with the folk and popular music of the Alpine region. A girl (the soprano), stranded on top of an un-climbable mountain peak as a young baby, is taught to sing by the mountain animals. Young Bobli lives in the village far below the un-climbable peak. He was born mute and communicates with the world by playing the trumpet. Bobli hears the soprano's song drifting down into the valley. The soprano listens to Bobli's trumpet tunes blown up to her by the wind. They are both enchanted. The three acts are separated by interludes describing how three animals experience time passing in relation to a musical tempo. Like any self respecting melodrama the text and music combine to depict or imply a wide ranging theatrical adventure, in this piece starting at the Creation (or the big bang), a lonely existence, scenes of rustic village life, some carpentry, many mountain goats, unrequited love, and ending in a quest destined to fail. In a live performance the text [provided with the performance material] is to be projected on a screen behind the musicians in the style of silent movie intertitles.
