The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Rather, it takes herbeautiful words, and the fundamentals of her visions, and attempts to create a new narrative andspiritual experience from them.This is the full score. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934204). Elemental Spiral is the result of some of my recent work linking elemental aspects of esoteric. The work begins with an electronic prelude, and moves to the instrumental portion at about 4:00.healing and vibration (sound). The concept of matter and form being integrally connected and influenced/formed by sound has been studied since ancient times, and myths from various world cultures mention gods or beings that could manifest form from matter through their voice. Recent work by Hans Jenny verifies the connection between sound and form (see Cymatics).Similarly, the power of music to affect response in individuals is a popular subject of ancient and modern writers. My interest in the work stems from observing how people react to my music, in which I believe certain thoughts and feelings are somehow encoded, transmitted and received during performance. My research stems from a desire to increase my own awareness of sound, its affect, and to connect this to my art. The integration of dance with the music creates a visual relationship that marries the sound and its intention.Elemental Spiral maps elemental associations (earth, water, fire, and air) to the musical context in a deliberate fashion. At this stage my associations are fairly literal, and various qualities (i.e. earth=slow, fire=energetic, air=fast frenetic) are mapped directly onto musical material. The associations become richer when one state changes to another or comes into being (water->air, becoming earth etc.) and when various qualities are mixed (air-pitch with earth rhythm etc.).The intended effect is an overall balancing of the musical structure with desirable or pleasing proportions (the age old compositional question). This balancing is well known to all of us, for instance-elementally-much of Beethoven’s music moves between water and fire elements (mapping of speed and pitch), and the tempos of symphonic movements fast-slow-med. fast-fast is an affirmation that a balance of tempi and musical content is found to be pleasing.I express my deepest gratitude to Donald Laney who choreographed the dance for this work. He was somehow able to convert my musings into movement and in the process far exceeded my expectations. Duration: 10 minutes, 16 pp. Description: In speaking of his recitation of his Four Quartets on phonograph, T. S. Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes.
