It is the traditional march of the Wachbataillon, the German Bundeswehr's elite drill unit, and is also played as the first march at the Grand Tattoo (Großer Zapfenstreich)[2] and it was a march of the East German armed forces.They are rearranged here for double wind dectet.Optional piccolo and bass will add depth to the sound.

Helping Hands is a march written for the British Bandsman March Composition Contest, entered into category 2 (marches for 3rd/4th section bands). It is dedicated to all the volunteers that make the Whit Friday March Contests possible, which is said to be the greatest free show on Earth. The piece is loosely programmatic in nature.The introduction is fanfare-like, announcing the date of the next Whit Friday Contests and the bands’ anticipation of and preparation for the event. The first section is the march of the volunteers, as they descend upon the many venues, ready to run the contests. There is the usual hustle and bustle before the second section sees the contests start. The bands strike up, march, finish and go from place to place, whilst the volunteers manage them, the audiences, and all manner of issues and problems thrown at them. The third section represents the bad weather which has, at times, presented itself on that particular Friday. But everyone carries on (possibly the sun comes out) and we enjoy the day.The trio uses the hymn St. Vincent by Sigismund Neukomm: St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and volunteering, hence its use here. There is a small bridge that is reminiscent of previously used motifs and melodies before the hymn returns. J. Ricketts (1881 - 1945) a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

It was probably composed as incidental music to the play El Hyder or, The War Wolf of Indostan, a melodrama. The composer is unknown but I have found one source that credits Edward Bohuszewicz (1775-1834) This march is found in the Musicians Companion Volume 1 by Elias Howe, Jr. (1820–1895). published in 1840 arranged for a quintet of keyed bugles, cornopean, trombone, and ophicleide. https://youtu.be/B7Tf0c-MUos.
