Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.6535-E). Marian Variations for harp solo was written for and is dedicated to harpist Ruth Inglefield, Professor of Harp at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung. I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

The beautiful prayer AVE MARIA, melody by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) based on PRELUDE IN C by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Adapted beautifully for pedal harp, with alto voice (vocal range from G below middle C, to the second E above middle C). Voice part could be sung by a baritone an octave lower than written. Flute, violin or oboe (playing an octave higher than written) may be substituted for the voice. There is an optional cello part (doubling the low notes of the harp part), so it can be played as a duo OR a trio. Perfect for any Christian occasion: Christmastime, funerals, weddings (especially the 'Marian presentation' of some Catholic weddings, in which the bride offers flowers to a statue of Virgin Mary). About 4 minutes and 20 seconds long with the repeat (or 2 minutes and 10 seconds long if you don't take the repeat, but go directly to the second ending). The PDF includes ALL three parts. The harp part also shows the vocal part on a small staff. There is a separate part (included) for the voice (or flute or violin or oboe) and a separate part (included) for the cello. The layout is such that if you can print out double-sided, the harp part and the vocal part have front and back covers. The cello part is only one page. The film's soundtrack also included songs by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, as well as the composition by Bonfá Samba de Orfeu. Manhã de Carnaval appears in the film, including versions sung or hummed by both the principal characters (Orfeu and Euridice), as well as an instrumental version, so that the song has been described as the main musical theme of the film. In the portion of the film in which the song is sung by the character Orfeu, portrayed by Breno Mello, the song was dubbed by Agostinho dos Santos. The song was initially rejected for inclusion in the film by Camus, but Bonfá was able to convince the director that the music for Manhã de Carnaval was superior to the song.

The clarinet quartet arrangement of Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light, was made for the 2018 Holiday Contest Entry. Martin Luther developed the Lutheran chorale, a religious hymn sung in four-part harmony by the congregation as part of the service. Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light was written by Johann Rist and Johann Schop in the mid-17th century, so that by 1734, when Bach included it in his Christmas Oratorio, it was well known to congregations. The harmonization, however, is Bach ‘s own. The arrangement remains faithful to the original facsimile of Bach. It is transposed for a modern clarinet quartet. Variations in loudness and the duration of musical notes are the basic elements to musical expression. A few interpretation symbols where added to shorten some of the notes. Breathing between music phrases is notated. and the final was stretched with one more bar for a ralentando effect. This details are only suggestions for an interpretation. The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth. Joseph and Mary (Josep i Maria) has an English lyric which, like the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream.
