A young woman looks forward to her wedding. The first song has quartal harmony and the second is in 12-note serial. I require a 4-octave marimba, c-c4. I have assumed the marimba has a 4-octave range, c to c4. In the first section I use only four-note quartals.

This collection contains 10 hymns notated for C major diatonic scale Tongue Drums (suitable for 8, 11, or 13-note drums in the key of C). These hymns can be performed as solos, as rhythmic chord accompaniment for singing, or as duets. Four separate scores are provided for each song to allow maximum flexibility. These scores can be used in numerous ways from solo playing to playing with a partner or as a group. Each song also has an accompanying note and chord reference chart as well as a rhythm pattern chart. Descriptions of each score and chart are detailed on the introduction page and summarized below: Melody Score This score can be played as a solo with or without singing along. Those new to reading standard music notation as well as those already familiar with music notation will find the numbers above the staff helpful. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the Tongue Drum. Lyrics are provided below the staff for sing along enjoyment Harmony Score This score can be used in conjunction with the Melody Score to form a duet by providing the accompaniment while someone plays or sings the melody. Chord names are shown above the staff for playing a rhythmic accompaniment in place of the harmony accompaniment shown. The chord names can also be used for ensemble playing with other instruments. Grand Staff The Grand Staff score combines the Melody Score with the Harmony Score. This score provides a visual overview of how the two scores line up and is helpful for a director using this set of scores in a group setting. If playing with a partner, this score may be easier to use since both players can see what the other person is playing. This score includes Tongue Drum note numbers above the melody staff and below the harmony staff; chord names above the harmony staff for using a rhythmic chord accompaniment; and lyrics between the staves for sing along enjoyment. Advanced Solo Score This score includes both harmony and melody notes to create a fuller sounding solo. Numbers corresponding to the numbers on the Tongue Drum are included above the staff. Note and Chord Chart This chart consists of two separate staff rows. The first staff shows the notes used for the melody and harmony. The second staff shows the notes in each chord used in this song. Any combination of the notes within a given chord can be played using one of the rhythm patterns. Rhythm Chart This chart shows four rhythm patterns that can be used as an accompaniment for the melody. Using the Harmony Score or the Grand Staff, follow the chord names to play notes from the given chord using one of the rhythm patterns. Each song is also available separately with accompanying preview pages and audio samples. Chicory Music #734222. Published by Chicory Music (A0.1134126). O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is one of the better-known hymns that is typically sung during the Christmas season. What some may not know is that it originated in the Middle Ages, around A.D. 800, as an antiphon, or anthem, that was restructured into verse form in the 1100's and was eventually published in Latin in 1710. The hymn was later discovered, translated, and published in 1851 by John Mason Neale, an Anglican minister. This arrangement for Oboe / Clarinet duet is written in e minor at the Intermediate Level. I should know, since this was one of the first songs I wrote when I was learning ukulele. As a songwriter, I'm always on the look out for song ideas that have some sort of universal appeal; a unique angle. Is this a song about hummingbirds? Is it about love? Well, yes and maybe more. That's the beauty of this song in my mind. It's a bit romantic, a bit nostalgic, and just a touch ironic. When I wrote the line Nobody sings of Hummingbirds anymore I laughed because there was - singing about them! And now you can too. I realize this is just a tiny song in a universe of loud, brash, sexy, etc. I like some of those songs too. Cheer Up, Pull Away: A Duet for Oboe and Bb Clarinet is inspired by the travels of Thomas Forrest (1729-1802). Forrest was a captain in the British Royal Navy and a captain for the British East India Company. During his travels to Indonesia, he recorded his adventures in a journal. The Maluku islands are a province in Indonesia, west of New Guinea. The islands were known for their production of nutmeg and cloves. During Forrest's time in the Maluku islands, he came across a local fishing vessel. There, he noticed that when the sailors on the ship became fatigued, the first-mate would begin a call of motivation to the men at the oars. The men would respond back with a melody, which lighted their drowsy spirits enough to continue rowing for the whole night. Forrest recorded one of these locals songs. Translated into English, the chants contain, What fishes abound in its main; Behold you island afar; Haste, Haste and the fishes obtain. In 1818, Thomas Van Dyke Wiesenthal of the United States Navy composed a chorus and piano arrangement based on Forrest's journals; Cheer up! Pull away! The song featured calls and responses as similar to the sea chanties from the Maluku sailors. The melody in this arrangement of Cheer Up, Pull Away is passed between the oboe and the Bb clarinet; resembling the call and response of the Maluku sea chanties. The dynamically loud and abrupt sixteenth note arpeggios throughout the piece represent abrupt transition from drowsy and fatigued sailors to alert and motivated crew after participating in the chanty. This arrangement is suggested for those in grades 8, 9 and 10. Students will gain experience working with a six-eight time signature and controlling dynamics without being distracted with difficult fingerings and octaves. This piece may be used in solo and ensemble competitions throughout the United States of America, or as a fun piece for students to become comfortable in a six-eight time signature. There are 68 measures in this piece. The tempo is set to be dotted quarter note = 80 BPM; students should perform the piece in any tempo best suited to their needs. This piece will be 104 seconds long at quarter note = 80 BPM. Bb Concert Key.

The first movement is set in Eva Tanguay’s voice and works well dramatically for mezzo-soprano. Eva Tanguay (1879-1947) was born in Canada and billed herself as the girl who made vaudeville famous. She was known for her suggestive songs and extravagant costumes. She has been likened to Madonna or Lady Gaga. Her one recording was I Don’t Care in 1922. Her parents moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts in the 1880’s and she began her career as a teenager at the Cohoes Music Hall. At the age of nineteen she made her debut in New York City. Tanguay was the highest paid woman of her day but was said to have lost more than two million dollars in the Wall Street crash of 1929. Tanguay had a reputation for outlandish behavior and was once fined $50 in Louisville, Kentucky for throwing a stagehand down a flight of stairs. She died, blind and nearly destitute, at the age of 68 in Hollywood. In 1953 Mitzi Gaynor portrayed Eva Tanguay in a fictionalized version of her life in the motion picture, The I Don’t Care Girl. Her ghost is said to still haunt Cohoes Music Hall in upstate New York. Letters from Cohoes is a highly fictionalized, musical portrayal of Eva Tanguay’s ghost. In its original form it was scored for flute (doubling on alto flute, contrabass flute and piccolo), harp, string quartet and solo baritone. It is in four movements, taking the form of letters.
