I intend to compose using the structure of theme and variations, scored for a brass band which consists of an Eb Soprano cornet, Bb cornets, Flugelhorn, Eb Tenor horns, Bb Baritones, Tenor Trombones, Bass trombone, Bb Euphonium, Bb Tuba, Eb tuba and percussion. I intend to convey multiple moods and brass band techniques throughout my piece by creating blended harmony, jazzy rhythm, and modulation. With the theme, I intend to make the band blend in harmony with the music. Into the first variation to create different rhythms and to create a jazz mood. To create the theme, I intend to establish the key of Db major in 4/4 time with a homophonic texture. For Example, to establish the key of Db in bb.1-8. I intend to use the primary and secondary chords Db, Eb, Db, Bb, Eb, Bb, Db, Bb, Eb, Fm, Gm, Bb, Eb, Fm, Ab, Db. To strengthen the chords, I use the root note in the bass lines (e.g. Bb bass).  With creating the theme I also take into consideration having a structured flowing catchy melody to show the audience a clear statement that this is the theme. The Rhymtic features in the theme are crotchets and quavers. But which are soon to be embellished in the variations. The dynamic in the theme is mf (mezzo-forte)  and mp (mezzo-piano)  in the higher instruments.  And forte in the lower voices for balancing. The tempo marking is crotchet equals 60 beats per minute. In variation 1, I intend to maintain the original melody from the theme (solo cornet)  whole creating contrast with the inclusion of jazz-styled rhythms and dissonant chords. For example, I use a jazz-styled drum ostinato (bb. 9-61) Featuring dotted quavers and semiquavers. In addition to this, I feature dissonance with the use of 7th chords which can be seen at bb.18-26, 31-39, and bars  54-62 For example, in bars 18-26 the cornets are playing the melody in a four-part harmony only using 7th chords. The rhythmic features are more embellished using crotchets and quavers. But also using dotted quavers and semiquavers to show that this melody this a variation. The dynamics in the variation are extended with more instruments having a forte dynamic to have a strong expressive dynamic. Inspiration of this variation comes from people like (Maynard Ferguson, and Gordon Goodwin).

This is a Basie Style chart It is meant to swing and not to just to show off technique. The structure is 12 bar blues. It can be opened for solos,there is a 2nd trumpet solo with backgrounds. This is a relaxed chart with Basie Klinks at all the right spots...all written out The ending is a series of tags, first one soft last one fffff with Basis Klinksat the end. The bass part must be played as written because every note is a part of what is happening in the rest of the band. If the bass line is cluttered it won’t swing. Concert Note:The Five Poems of Melissanthi, in the English translation of Diana Maynard, comprise a complete vocal cycle of five poems set to music as a posthumous tribute by the composer to the Athenian poet Melissanthi (1910-1991), in the manner of the old tombeaux of the Baroque era, a tradition also used by many composers of the first half of the 20th century. This composer confirms, with reference to his own experience of Melissanthi's poetry these five from among her many poems have made a such a great impact on my composing that I felt the need to dedicate these musical pages to her.The evocative poetic expressions of Melissanthi, whose real name was Eve Chougia-Skandalaki, and the mysterious atmospheres invoked by David Solomons' music introduce the listener to an ethereal and metaphysical dimension, allowing us a glimpse into the unknown and the intangible. A recurring theme, which unites the five lyrics by an invisible thread, is an incessant fluctuation between the real and the unreal, between the known and the unknown and between reality and unreality. The inevitable abandonment of the mind to the seductive charms of the surreal creates an extraordinary parallelism with lines from a great poet of the past…così tra questa/immensità s'annega il pensier mio:/e il naufragar m'è dolcein questo mare[…so in this/immensity my thoughts drown:/ and to be shipwrecked is sweetfor me in this sea.](Giacomo Leopardi, L'Infinito, 1819).Both the performance and the enjoyment of the Five Poems therefore require particular emotional involvement, in an overall picture where every single note is a tiny but essential constituent of a larger and more complex musical architecture. The harmonic structure of the five compositions presents a substantial homogenity of formulation even within the various rhythmicalsolutions selected, with their repeated returns to themes and chords. Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in Bb lead-sheet format here, for tenor sax or other Bb instruments.) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track featured Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio.
