Published by David Heywood (A0.910421). On a Slow Boat to China has been a favorite of jazz musicians for over 75 years because of its grooving melody and fantastic chord changes. In that tradition, here is a hard swinging arrangement for four flutes (Three C Flutes and Alto Flute) along with rhythm section. After a dramatic chromatic introduction, the groove is set by a bass ostinato pedal that helps the melody build to the second half. All four flutes have a shot at the melody before opening up for solos for everyone over these great changes. After the solos, there is a stop time flute feature where a written out line is passed back and forth between all the players giving the effect of a group improvisation. It finishes with the same high-energy ostinato pedal. The chart includes written out piano voicings and bass lines, along with an optional guitar part. At a medium advanced level, this chart is well within the reach of most doublers, and is a swinging addition to any program!

Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1102258). 18/04/’21: A Reflection is written as a tentative expression of the tumultuous emotions experienced by the composer, upon watching so many landmarks of their home be threatened or destroyed by the fire which ravaged Table Mountain on the 18th and 19th of April 2021. The most impactful symbol of this tragedy is, for the composer, the heart-rending body of images showing the Jagger Reading Room ablaze. The score expresses the composer’s experiences in a collage, drawing from C. Debussy’s La Cathedral Engloutie and W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in evocation of the emotions surrounding the burning library, and enacts them in a three-part narrative. The opening is articulated as a collection of sporadic outbursts heard against a slower melody and a rising bell motif. This is an evocation of the shifting uncertainty of the early hours of the fire shortly after it had consumed the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. This slowly becomes the evocation of horror and dismay that characterises the second section, as the fire takes hold of Mostert’s Mill, various parts of the University of Cape Town forcing students into a full evacuation of their residences, and eventually the Jagger Reading Room. The finality of the second section’s ending is followed by the muted resignation and mourning of the third and final section. The slowed melody from the first section returns, without the frenetic outbursts. All the listener is left with is the certainty of what has happened. The melody tries to rise to triumph, as the fire is held back from any further destruction, but ultimately falls back down and limps its way to an unsatisfactory and inconclusive closing statement.

You Stepped Out of a Dream is an exciting new samba arrangement of this familiar jazz standard for flute choir (piccolo, C flutes 1-5, alto and bass) with rhythm section (piano, bass, and drum set). The unique feature of this arrangement is that the piece opens with the flutes coming in in layers imitating the instruments of the Brazilian batucada, a substyle of samba that is made up of percussion instruments, along with the drum set. The melody is then presented with tight, crisp jazz harmonies, and opens up to a piano solo with flute backgrounds, and optional parts included for jazz flute soloist(s) as well. This is followed by a chorus of written out flute solis with the group split up into three groups that all finish together in time for the melody again. The piece finishes with an open repeat of the entire group playing the batucada rhythms with the drums, and a chance to get the audience involved with clapping or even dancing. The atmosphere, created by an opening ostinato in the bass, creates a sense of foreboding that builds in intensity. Eventually, the tune meanders into a dream sequence, and a melody arrives in the treble part that momentarily quells the rougher waters. However, this “awakened†memory only ignites a sense of urgency as the quick rhythmic flourishes lead us back to the beginning theme before gradually trailing away.
