Published by Ndodana-Breen (A0.928493). Migration, dislocation and exile have always been key themes in the historical narrative of the Black experience in South Africa. These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

I composed this piece for the five extraordinary voices of VAMP Vocals for their September 2023 concert “Between the Worlds.†The treble voices tell the story and react to the narrative over evocative vibraphone harmonies. In the middle section, the percussionist bangs loudly on metal to sound like submarine pipes, structure, and hull breaking. The loss of the USS Thresher (SSN-593) spurred the Navy to institute the very successful Submarine Safety Program (SUBSAFE). DIES PACIS is dedicated to the memory of Gordon Francis Blaney, Jr. He was a multi-instrumentalist and Berklee alum. We met through a variety of Facebook groups devoted to music composition and orchestration. He had mental health issues, autism, and epilepsy. Gordon died tragically in a car accident in 2020, at the age of 37. Gordon and I would talk about music, mental health, and spirituality on a regular basis. One of my spiritual views is that death is a form of relief from pain, similar to serenity or peace. (In Latin, PACIS.) Gordon's life was cut short, as evidenced by the unresolved music over notes G, F, and B (Gordon's initials).

I originally wanted to compose a short, bittersweet waltz, and the mythological city of Atlantis seemed perfect for this. The waltz I ended up with is not really meant for dancing, but rather used as a way for storytelling. This story, however, is one of my own fabrications but is still loosely based on the Atlantis mentioned by Plato's dialogues: Critias and Timaeus. This piece outlines two Atlanteans that, with the end in sight, decide to dance one last waltz together as their gleaming city collapses around them. It's a tragic farewell to a utopia that once was and could've been, but remains now as only a memory – a relic lost at the bottom of the sea.

The solo clarinet represents the chant of the traditional prayer leader while the organ plays the response of the congregation of the synagogue. The piece ends with a cadenza of the solo clarinet to which an optional organ improvisation can be added. Barbara Heller dedicated this chorale to the memory of Elke Mascha Blankenburg (1943–2013). Talking about her before the first performance, the composer said: ‘She was open-hearted with a really tender soul, very trusting. Her creativity knew no limits; she was also an almost fanatical campaigner for music by women. In the music you will hear now I have attempted to convey some aspects of her personality: charming, loving, obstinate, committed, volatile, tragic, crazy, untamed, tender and anguished.’ The various sections of this chorale may be performed in a correspondingly contrasting manner: searching, hesitant, visionary, focused, volatile, accusatory, hopeful, etc., with use of rubato and powerful contrasts in dynamic and tone quality.

Published by Christopher Patton (A0.1029157). Writing this duet for flute and oboe//English Horn began immediately after the massacre at the Pulse night club in Orlando, FL in June 2016. The fate which befell those innocent people was undeserving in spite of where they were and who they were. I expressed my anger and outrage in this music to honor the memory of those who died that night. The first movement is a bit off-kilter; there is something in the air. The second movement is evocative of having a nice evening and enjoying time with friends. As the the third movement begins, the music depicts something ominous coming which crescendos to the flute and oboe a second apart representing screams. My intent with the prior statement is not to relive the horrors of that evening. I wanted to respectfully represent what happened. I wanted the performers in addition to interpreting my music to have an active role in the composition in which the flute and oboe engage in an improvisation to represent the rampage and their outrage. The remainder of the final movement gradually slows as the flute and oboe notes are sustained and ascending to a quiet and peaceful end with the unspoken message nothing will keep us down. .
