La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) is a prelude written by the French composer Claude Debussy for solo piano. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy's first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content. This piece is based on an ancient Breton myth in which a cathedral, submerged underwater off the coast of the Island of Ys, rises up from the sea on clear mornings when the water is transparent. Sounds can be heard of priests chanting, bells chiming, and the organ playing, from across the sea.

This piece originally written for cello, guitar and Timple (traditional instrument from the Canary Islands) is on my first solo album, you can also listen to it on Spotify. Television was interested in my work and I have posted the link of my performance in the program. A work based on the poem by poet Mercedes Pinto and whose idea was to merge the sound of the cello with the timple. It fuses styles, character and folklore. Anyone born in the Canary Islands will not miss the traditional sound in some moments (as in part C).

It starts with a brief introduction, then the four vocal parts sing the main melody and counter-melody in pairs, to form a doubled round. The melodies are different lengths, so as the round progresses, the related patterns shift and merge to create a strangely hypnotic, echoey effect. The whole song lasts for about two minutes. Â The short, repeated phrases make it easy to learn and quick to teach, so it is ideal for warming-up, practice, or performance. The occasional use of a rain-stick and descending plinks of a sansula or kalimba can enhance the atmosphere of this enchanting song.

Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden (2009) for clarinet, bass clarinet, pipa, and erhu (score and parts) I composed this piece imagining myself in a garden of images, sonorities, and aromas that all merge in an idyllic moment in time. I have taken a line from one of T.S.Eliot’s poems in the Four Quartets, for my title, Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden. The poem, Burnt Norton, concludes with the poignant truth that humankind cannot bear very much reality. I often wonder whether my work as a composer really has any significance or meaning beyond helping my listeners temporarily escape their personal realities. In recalling Eliot’s line, What might have been and what has been/ point to one end, which is always present I am reminded that a melody, a single line of lyric pitch flow evokes memory in the mind of the listener and that rhythm and accent often draws our attention to the present moving towards the future. So, with these inherent powersof music in mind, it was my goal to create a piece of vibrant and engaging music that relentlessly draws the listener into the present moment. Eliot also alludes to a timeless merging of present and past in this poem. His line, then a cloud passed and the pool was empty brought back memories of being a child watching clouds almost unnoticeably move across the sky. I was similarly inspired to conclude Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden with music that evokes an ecstatic stillness tempered with a longing for the past. WGN
