Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP304). 9 x 12 in inches.Nicholson's compositional activity featured works for singers and wind instrumentalists-the latter works usually written for his colleagues in the LSO. The roster of dedicatees for these pieces reads as a veritable Who's Who of British wind players: Archie Camden, Nicholas Daniel. Clive Evans, Leon Goosens, Val Kennedy, and Gervase de Peyer. The work written for Kennedy, the Impromptu for Contrabassoon and Small Orchestra, caught the attention of the American contrabassoonists Susan Nigro. She began a friendship with Nicholson through correspondence and eventually performed the Impromptu many times, both with orchestra and the composer's piano reduction.Nigro requested another piece for contrabassoon from Nicholson and the result is the Miniature Suite for Contrabassoon and Piano. Nicholson composed the work during January and February of 1993. Susan Nigro and pianist Mark Lindeblad performed the world premiere on a recital in Chicago on 28 September 1993. The Miniature Suite was originally published by Bassoon Heritage Edition in 1995.

From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel, a student at the Thomasschule from 1751, who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus, neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major, recent criticism suggests that it may originally have been written for strings only, and dates, in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices. The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz, Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.

Scoring this movement for double reed ensemble was mostly a challenge in how high the general orchestration is. With all of the low registers of instruments omitted in the original, it left for some bassoon parts that were constantly in the high range, with the third bassoon and contra found in all of the other movements being omitted. The oboe parts also go quite high as a result, and although I considered it, I decided against lowering the key from the original in order to preserve the miniature aspect of the piece that Tchaikovsky intended from the high ranges. Otherwise, I quite like how this transcription turned out, though it is definitely a technical challenge to get up to speed. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. The whole composition last for approximately nine minuets.The three movements are entitled, Dawning, Courting, and Wedding; each evoking unique images yet the three are connected as a whole. Despite this being a piano trio, the second movement is a love duet between violin and violoncello in which the piano does not participate. Another aberrant characteristic is that the piano, with few exceptions, plays asupportive role for the two string instruments.
