When approaching how to arrange this piece, the biggest challenge was the motor rhythm of the repeated eighth notes constantly present in the string parts. It is also occasionally present in the original bassoon parts, however, and is playable if the piece is taken at a more conservative tempo. Double-tonguing certainly makes it possible at faster speeds, but having an entire ensemble that can do it is an unlikely scenario. Leaving it out completely made for a much less exciting arrangement. As such, I've tried to spread those passages among all the parts so that no one part had to do it for too long a stretch at a time. Also, the option to replace the eighth notes with quarter notes is present in all the parts - that can be done uniformly throughout the ensemble, only for players that need it, or even would be fine if players who can mostly keep up with the tonguing need just a measure or two break. As typical in my large transcriptions, all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi in two parts. I did my best to keep up with the tonguing in the layered recording attached, and, as always, keep in mind that I'm an oboist, and please forgive my inelegant attempt at what is a very standard and challenging bassoon excerpt.

I have modified the string parts to make them more suitable for wind.The horn parts are mostly Mozart’s,(horns in D,) with a few additions of mine. I have, as Mozart had to, written for the natural horn. The video is of my arrangement in EbThe clarinet parts are for CLARINET IN AThe string parts are allocated equally amongst the woodwind. Still quite a blow but playable.Arranged for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in A, 2 horns in D and 2 bassoons. Published by RBMusic (A0.752286). ‘Der Schauspieldirektor’ (or ‘The Impresario’), by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of two works commissioned by the Austrian Emperor Joseph II for a competition he held in the Orangery at Schönbrunn in 1786. The competition was conceived in an attempt to prove that the German Singspiel - comedy with music - had become as popular as the Italian Opera Buffa - opera where musical numbers were linked by sung recitatives. The Italian entry was written by Antonio Salieri and, to the disappointment of the Emperor, he won the contest (leading to ‘Der Schauspieldirektor’ being one of Mozart’s least performed works). However, considering that it was commission around the time that he was busy writing his comedy ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ (or ‘The Marriage of Figaro’), this really comes as no surprise. ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ was not only an instant success, with 5 numbers encored at its premiere on 1 May 1786 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, but it had also not just lost a music competition.This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The MP3 audio clip is a live performance by a scratch band who had limited rehearsal time.
