It was written originally for saxophone and organ by its comissioner the saxophonist Paul Wehage and Françoise Lvéchin-Gangloff, the organist at the Church of Sain Roch in Paris where the work was premièred on February 12, 2012 It also exists in a version for saxophone and piano and for saxophone and string orchestra (with harp). The orchestral version was recorded on Thérèse Brenet's CD Le Livre de L'Harmonie du Monde on JTB-Prod (http://www.jtbprod.com/llhm.htm ) The orchestral materials are available on rental from the publisher (email to infoATclassicalmusicnow.com) The work is not a literal illustration of the poem, but an evocation of emotional states between a Romantic literary work and the music which the writing inspired more than a century and a half later, seen through a Modern musical aesthetic. To You for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and piano is dedicated to the American Baritone Kurt Ollmann, who has done much for the promotion and performance of American music both in the United States and abroad.Whitman’s poem speaks of seeing a stranger and feeling love for this person. In contrast to Poe’s To Helen, which treats a similar subject of a chance meeting of a stranger that the poet loves, Whitman does not idealize his subject but rather pointedly and brutally describes how he sees this person and what feelings (both negative and positive) this contemplation provokes in the poet’s mind In order to reflect this musically, there is an alternation between more introspective and brooding sections which are then followed by more ecstatic outbursts. The piece ends with the poet watching the stranger leave, expressing what the composer felt to be acceptance and release.As in any chamber music with voice, it is important that the two instruments allow the voice to predominate, regardless of the dynamics marked in their parts. The saxophonist should try as much as possible to match colour with the voice,in order to allow the contrapuntal exchanges between the voice and the saxophone to blend evenly. The word Boustrophédon is a 16th century expression which refers to an archaic type of writing in which, after having written a line from left to right, one continues the next line from right to left and then alternates directions. This is the way the oldest known latin inscriptions are written, as well as in the traditional writing of the Touaregs The etymology comes from the Greek “bous†or ox and the verbal form “trophéin†or the verb “to turnâ€. These two elements give the image that this writing is traced in the same way that the ox pulled the plow in the fields In the sub-title, there is an evocation of Rimbaud‘s famous “Vowel“ sonnet : : Oh, sublime trumpet full of strange piercing sounds The author wanted to suggest both musically and technically the manner of this style of writing in boustrophedon. The work begins thus with a sonorous strange sonorous background which suggests this type of writing. This strange atmosphere is created by glissandi on the piano strings as well as on the strings of the violin and the violoncello. These alternating movements create “strange piercing sounds†against which the flute and clarinet alternately play brief sequences which create the outline of a melody. Then the atmosphere changes : the violin, the cello and the piano come together in a percussive violent outburst, which creates a tragic, passionate feeling which may also be considered “strange piercing soundsâ€. Several long aleatoric phrases are then presented like a sonorous halo which intensify to bring the lister to an intense Chorale-like phrase which serves as the central pillar of the work. This phrase is repeated several times, each time gaining in intensity to bring the work to its summit. Concerto for Bass Trombone and Six Players (2006) was commissioned by the CarnegieMellon School of Music for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales,director. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark†instruments– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is thefocal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with muchmaterial best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,and bitter tone throughout.Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and therest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “first†among a collection of like mindedindividuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.The opening section is marked “spasmodic.†Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to amelodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. When we first begandiscussing the idea of a new chamber euphonium concerto, Matthew specifically requested apiece connected to folk music. In recent years, he has been interested in taking theeuphonium into folk music contexts in which it is not normally found. Thus, the idea behindthis work became that of creating a concert piece connected to folk traditions.Although this work is heavily connected to folk music, it does not quote or use any actualfolk tunes or material directly. For each of the three movements, I began by composing anoriginal folk tune within that national style. Each movement of the work is then anarrangement in my own musical style of my original folk tune. The formal and harmoniclanguage is simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. Themiddle sections contain settings of the basic melody -- first presented over a bagpipe-likedrone (with interjections) and then in a full harmonization.The second movement, Ceremonial (Nigeria), combines a harmonic refrain along with asimple melody in the Nigerian/Yoruban folk style. As the movement progresses, theeuphonium plays the role of a song-leader, adding increasingly impassioned countermelodiesand textures over the basic refrains.The third movement, Circle Dance (America), is jubilant -- in the vein of the folk songs ofthe Shakers. A basic rondo structure alternates the principal melody with contrastingexcursions.

After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns. At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life.The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.775995). Viola Quintet (Unquiet Parables) (2009) was commissioned by the Vienna Soloists and is dedicated to Jack Melby and Jane Thompson. The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The starting point for the music is dissonant cadential figuration centered on Ab (taken from the voice leading of American colonial-era music). Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate a sonority formed from perfect 5ths one semitone apart. Irregular phrase lengths and cadences are used as the basis of the work’s large-scale structures. The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for the instruments in solo. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interrupted periodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet. The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody in turn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a re-articulation of the cadential figuration. The third movement, Ductia, is energetic and driving. A ductia is a Medieval stamping dance resembling the estampie. The driving (yet sometimes off-kilter) character of the dance is interrupted by a recollection of the first movement’s material. The final resolution of the extended cadential figurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.

Quartet for Piano and Strings (A Sea Liturgy) (2009) was jointly commissioned for the Moscow Studio for New Music and the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble (Sarah Darling, artistic director). It is dedicated to the Arcturus Chamber Ensemble on its 10th anniversary. The work is cast in a single movement and is conceived as a sea liturgy. It attempts to conjure up an imagined set of spiritual rituals (not connected to any specific religion)-a ceremony of transformation and renewal performed in the context of a sea landscape. Though not broken into movements, the formal design of the work could be seen as follows: Processional - (Ritornello) - Invocation - Offering - (Ritornello) - Baptism - Rebirth - Recessional As with so many of my works, much of the initial musical planning took place in the context of the oceanscapes of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Those particular sea landscape were foremost in my mind while writing. The listener may also discard the imagined liturgical apparatus and simply listen to the work as a series of seascapes. (For the purposes of narrative clarity, the above section descriptors will be used in the below narrative.) The opening Processional begins with focused, austere intensity: the instruments unfold from a single pitch (E) into a more rich harmonic landscape. A Ritornello of pulsating string harmonics leads into Invocation, a warmly lyrical discourse. The Offering is a faster, jubilant development of the Invocation, where the prayerful melodies of the Invocation are transformed into a gift for the sea. A return of the Ritornello leads to the Baptism. In this section, heterophonic melodies unfold out of the new substrate pitch (D). In the transforming crucible of the water, these lines becomes more and more extended harmonically. The Rebirth is a dancing development of the Baptism; the harmonic extensions are pushed from dissonance into chords of pure joy. Emerging out of the afterglow of the Rebirth is the Recessional, in which the music of the Processional is revisited, now transformed by the ritual to center on the pitch D. The Recessional fades away peacefully, yet fervently.

Jaunts (2001) for mandolin quintet (2 mandolins, mandola, guitar and bass guitar) was written for and is dedicated to the Sydney Mandolins,with much admiration.The work is about travel -- not long journeys or voyages -- but rather jaunts which thedictionary defines as short trips or excursions, usually for pleasure. The work exploresdiverse textures within a short time-span. The piece is in four general sections: It begins witha slow and unfolding opening leading to a moderate jaunt. This proceeds into a much fasterand driving section which ends very abruptly. The moderate pace begins again to themoderate pace which leads finally the opening spare textures again.The seeds of the musical material for the entire work come from the first mandolin's openinggesture.Aspects of the color and textures of the mandolin ensemble have been utilized by thecomposer in the work, inspired very much from the hearing of countless recordings of theSydney Mandolins in the performance of contemporary music.

The texts are taken from a poem by the astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet. Nous nous étions plu, in Griphes, followed by Topiques, (Gérard Oberlé, Manoir de Pron, Nivernais, 1989). The juxtaposition suggests in epigram a quotation from Gaston Bachelard, which could apply to the musical score with an equal pertinence, since the music is, for Thérèse Brenet, the echo of the Cosmos “All of the words which are called to greatness by a poet are the keys to the universe, to the double universe of the cosmos and of the depths of the human soul.â€.

Valse Sophie is a part of a series of works in the style of 1920s saxophone music in preparation of the composition of my opera Light Unto Ashes, a musical allegory about the life of Saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft to a libretto by Elizabeth Kirschner. The particular work is in the style of the typical Operetta-style Waltz that was performed by instrumental soloists in recordings and concerts during the vaudeville era in the United States. The modified Rondo form (ABACA-coda) is also similar to 19th century works such as those composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle.

It could be that this sort of work could be seen as a sort of musical will. Whatever the case, the author wanted to use, as much as possible, the great expressive possiblities of this ensemble. The quartet and the piano, by attraction or repulsion, share their specific forces and come together in a flamboyant osmosis.
