Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.6535-E). Marian Variations for harp solo was written for and is dedicated to harpist Ruth Inglefield, Professor of Harp at the Peabody Conservatory. In 1975, I was a student in Dr. Inglefield's Music History class at Bowling Green State University, where I was pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Composition. Dr. Inglefield arranged for me to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, which I did from 1975-78, making me one of her last composition students and utterly changing my life. This piece is written in gratitude for Dr. Inglefield's vision and generosity.The work is based on my own Ave Maria for SATB chorus which was commissioned in 1991 by the San Francisco male vocal ensemble Chanticleer. Each of the four variations is based on the main melody of the Ave Maria and is separated by interludes built of contrasting material, all leading to a literal statement of the motet after the fourth variation. Thus, though the piece is largely intended for use in solo recitals, it could be played as part of a liturgical service where the motet is also sung. I am grateful to Sonja Inglefield for her expert and detailed editing of the score. Harpists Steve Main and Michael Rado also offered valuable suggestions. -David Conte.

Published by Thomas Groh (A0.1268609). „Maria durch ein Dornwald ging“ (Maria walks amid the thorns) is a wonderful German Advent hymn originating from the Eichsfeld region north of Eisenach in Thuringia. Its quite simple yet expressive melody thrills me already for a while. As my daughter learned to play the flute a few years ago, I decided to compose some variations for flute and piano on this hymn (with a quite easy part notably for the flute). The first sketch of the variations comprised the theme and simple versions of variations no. 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9. In summer 2016, I revised the initial variations and added the other ones; in autumn 2022, I adapted them to the instrumentation of alto saxophone and organ.

This particular composition utilizes the centering 'ah' of Buddhism, the meditative resting periods of Zen, the plainchant of Christianity, the minimalism of New Age, and more. My inspiration for the melodic line is the 3 main words in the traditional Ave Maria text; Ave (Hail) higher in the staff for celebration, Gratia (Grace) mid-staff for acceptance, and Dominus (God) low in the staff for humility. The melodic range for Flute is thus quite large - a full two octaves, from Db above the staff to Eb on the bottom line. The cello accompaniment is the same in every bar of the entire piece; a circling minimalist 2 chord broken triad ostinato. Whether for personal meditation or public performance, this piece will relax, focus, and recharge all who perform it and hear it. 2 pages; 3:00 minutes (presented in a condensed single staff score with the Cello part notated in the introduction then the score switches to the Flute part with instructions for the Cello to repeat that measure for the remainder of the song. 2 copies provided in download.).
