This arrangement of the song Hurt is a hybrid of the original version by Nine Inch Nails released in 1994 and the famous cover version by Johnny Cash release as a single in 2003 a half year before his death. Elements of the original Nine Inch Nails version include the main vocal melody performed by Guitar part 1, the descant descending line in Guitar 2 during the chorus (originally recorded with a piano sound), and the final aggressive chord strums in the outro. Elements of the Johnny Cash version include the guitar friendly key of G (instead of the original in B), the double-tracked rhythm guitars with slight variations in the intro/verses, as well as the high pedaling G in Guitar 2 during the pre-chorus.

And, since both the anthems and contemporary worship songs of today tend to neglect the second coming of Christ here’s an offering from the spiritual/anthem/jazz confluence.Angel, Blow that Trumpet is based on I Corinthians 13:50-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18. The style? Well, let’s call it “Natalie Sleeth meets New Orleans jazz!”You’re almost sure to find the voicing very approachable, yet thrilling for SATB (TTBB and SSA also available).The accompaniment is a dixie-land styling originally conceived for piano, string bass/fretless electric bass/standard bass guitar (it would be fun to have someone do it on the “big bass viol”), Bb clarinet, trombone and Bb trumpet. These parts are included with the choral score.Above all, it's fairly easy to learn and fun to sing!The clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun and the trumpet part features an easily playable/adaptable ending that nails the piece (actually the lower version is really nice). Plus, with the single exception of swinging the eighth note pairs, there’s no improvisation required here. I have always loved this hymn, and one Sunday morning when I had been called upon to write something lyric for our brass quartet (two trumpets in Bb, horn in F, and tuba), I went straight for It Is Well With My Soul. This arrangement tells in music the story of Horatio Spafford and the circumstances under which he wrote the lyric for this hymn. The piece opens with sounding of the horn of Spafford’s ship as she passes over the point at which Spafford's four daughters were lost. The first verse builds dramatically as the lyric comes to Spafford and ends with the lovely chorus. The next section is based on the third stanza of the hymn in which Spafford writes, My sin, not the part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross… The horn gets the melody, evoking the sound of Spafford’s own voice, and the other instruments vividly paint the hammering of the nails. However, as Spafford moves into the chorus, the harmony becomes dark and uncertain as Spafford’s grief overwhelms him; his faith wavers as he tries to believe what he is writing. Then, the melody transfers to the trumpet as Spafford is answered by the higher voice from above-his daughters assuring him that, yes, it IS well, it is well. The piece then ends with a peaceful statement of the chorus, evocative of the rolling sea and Spafford’s soul at peace. This piece can be played by a student ensemble; the primary challenge is in achieving the level of expression and emotion required to pull off a piece like this.

Published by 7plc Music (A0.1017095). Often termed the saddest day in the church's calendar this addition to my Holy Week suite looks very firmly to The Cross. Nails being driven into the helpless Christ, are announced on the harp with echoes of physical and emotional pain heralded by Horn (could be a Cor Anglais) with the cello adding a touch of cynicism. The Cross is lifted at the end of the repeated section and from thereon the work is semi-programmatic. The words of Jesus and the crowd are printed in brief to help the performers. The music gives way to the beautiful hymn 'O Sacred Head, sore wounded' and then the theme is extended in harp and cello. The upper harp part introduces what maybe tears falling...but whose?

Andean Refrains, composed by Dan Heslink The composing of Andean Refrains resulted from the composer’s travels in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, where he came to know and enjoy the melodies of the indigenous Andean band. Although the marimba is not an instrument of that region, it seems to be well-suited to the music’s technical and expressive demands. Requiring four marimbas and one xylophone, Andean Refrains is an original composition employing tradition Andean musical styles. Some of the five parts require four mallets, the others require two. It is best to perform the bass part on a marimba that can play two octaves below middle C, but if no instrument with that range is available octave transpositions of some notes is acceptable. In this work the marimbas imitate the wide vibrato of zampoñas, or panpipes, with rapidly alternating octaves. The notched-end wooden flute, quena, is suggested with hard mallets on the xylophone, and of course the guitars and charango (Andean ukulele) transcribe well to marimba with four mallets. The bass end of the marimba provides the register of the guitarrone. Chaccha, the rattle of llama toenails, is simulated by instructing one marimbaist to at times strike the bar with the handles of the mallet. With this work the composer hopes to capture the quiet dignity and inevitability of life’s events expressed by Andean musicians.
