The story is set during the late Cold War era and involves a rogue Soviet naval captain who wishes to defect to the United States with his officers and the Soviet Navy's newest and most advanced ballistic missile submarine, a fictional improvement on the Soviet Typhoon-class submarine. Premiered at the Queen's Hall at a Promenade Concert and so successful that it was repeated a month later during the same Proms season.(It became a favourite at the Proms, chalking up 35 performances between 1911 and 1951) Henry Balfour Gardiner (7 November 1877 – 28 June 1950) was a British musician, composer, and teacher.He was born at Kensington (London), began to play at the age of 5 and to compose at 9.Between his conventional education at Charterhouse School and New College, Oxford, where he obtained only a pass degree, Gardiner was a piano student at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he was taught by Iwan Knorr and Lazzaro Uzielli, who had been a pupil of Clara Schumann. He belonged to the Frankfurt Group, a circle of composers who studied at the Hoch Conservatory in the late 1890s Gardiner's most important work, possibly, was his promotion of the music of contemporary British and colonial composers, particularly through a series of concerts he personally financed at Queen's Hall London in 1912 to 1913. The composers represented included Arnold Bax, Frederic Austin, Gustav Holst, Percy Grainger, Roger Quilter, Cyril Scott and Norman O'Neill. These 9 tunes are part of a larger anthology entitled Of Castles, Kings, and Courts, available separately as a download for those who would prefer to have the complete book. As an audio sample, the Irish tune The Castle of Dromore is provided here. I’ve endeavored to keep the melodies true to their source, though I granted myself liberty to switch the tune between the two instruments, change octaves, and add embellishments on the repeats--something that might also be done in spontaneous performance. These arrangements were conceived for recorder and violin but may also be played on flute and violin or two violins. In this volume, the suggested recorder range is indicated, but the adaptable recorder player may experiment with different ranges. We prefer the soprano recorder (which sounds an octave higher than written) on reels, jigs, and hornpipes and the tenor recorder (or alto recorder depending on range) for slower, lyrical pieces. These pieces are delightful perform for Renaissance and Celtic festivals and theme events and to add romance to period or castle weddings. The song Caravan Song was written by Mike Batt and sung by the Scottish singer Barbara Dickson. It peaked at No. 41 in UK charts and was included on her album All for a Song.
