Leonardo Leo - Dixit Dominus a 2 cori, 1741, Quarto movimento Transcribed by Guido Menestrina Celebre compositore e capostipite della bella scuola napoletana del XVIII secolo, nacque a San Vito degli Schiavoni, presso Brindisi, in provincia di Terra d'Otranto. De Leo avrebbe compiuto i suoi studi musicali al conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini, sotto la direzione di Nicola Fago, soprannominato il tarentino[1]. Girolamo Chigi, maestro di Cappella di San Giovanni in Laterano, allievo e amico di Pitoni, dice che de Leo si recò a Roma e che vi studiò il contrappunto sotto la guida di questo sapiente maestro. Di ritorno a Napoli, de Leo ottenne il posto di secondo maestro al conservatorio della Pietà . Nel 1716 fu nominato organista della cappella reale e l'anno successivo venne designato per occupare il posto di maestro di cappella della chiesa di Santa Maria della Solitaria, per la quale scrisse molta musica. Nel 1719 fece rappresentare la Sofonisba, sua prima opera seria che fu ben accolta e in cui il carattere espressivo del suo talento si faceva già notare. I biografi che sostengono abbia insegnato al conservatorio di Loreto s'ingannano, fu infatti prima al conservatorio della Pietà , poi a quello di Sant'Onofrio, dove ebbe per allievi alcuni dei compositori più illustri del XVIII secolo, come Jommelli e Piccinni. Non morì nel 1743, come dice lo stesso Piccinni, in una breve notizia biografica sul suo maestro, né nel 1742 come afferma Burney, ma nel 1744. Il marchese di Villarosa, riferisce che de Leo sarebbe stato colpito da apoplessia, mentre era intento a scrivere un'aria buffa de La finta frascatana che comincia con queste parole: Voi par che gite/di palo in frasca. Lo si trovò con la testa appoggiata sul suo clavicembalo e si credette, in un primo momento che dormisse, ma in realtà aveva già cessato di vivere. Leo era di taglia media, colorito bruno, occhio vivo e temperamento ardente. Sebbene fosse abitualmente piuttosto serioso, non mancava di urbanità e gentilezza. Infaticabile nella professione, passava spesso la maggior parte delle notti a comporre e si trovava sempre in vena- Amava le sue opere, ma rendeva giustizia al merito dei suoi rivali quando occorreva. Morì rimpianto da tutti, lasciando a lungo il ricordo di sé e delle sue opere, nonché della scuola di cui fu uno dei fondatori. Considerazioni sull'artista Leo condivide col suo predecessore Alessandro Scarlatti e i contemporanei Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante e Francesco Feo, la gloria di aver fondato la scuola di Napoli, da cui sono usciti, durante tutto un secolo, una moltitudine di compositori drammatici di prim'ordine. Egli stesso fu non soltanto un grande professore, ma un artista dei più dotati. La sua musica da chiesa non ha meno maestà di quella di Durante, tocca il cuore e fa nascere degli slanci di tenera devozione. Il suo Miserere a due cori è una composizione tanto notevole per l'elevatezza dei sentimenti che l'hanno dettata, quanto per la purezza di stile in cui si riconoscono le tracce della scuola cantoria romana in cui studiò. Nella sua musica sacra nello stile accompagnato e concertato, de Leo conserva la semplicità e si fa ammirare per la bellezza dell'espressione, come l'Ave Maris Stella per voce di soprano e orchestra o il Credo a quattro. Egualmente notevole nel genere teatrale, de Leo è sempre nobile, spesso patetico e appassionato ed è con questi mezzi, molto semplici, che perviene a grandi effetti. J. Ricketts (1881 - 1945) a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford. Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled 'The River Kwai March' for the 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. On account of the movie the 'Colonel Bogey March' is often incorrectly credited as the 'River Kwai March'.

Stile Antico: On a theme of Palestrina (2012) for 5-voice cello ensemble The title Stile Antico refers a style of musical composition from the 16th century which was often employed in church music, because it allowed the words (sacred text) of each singer to be clearly heard. This pre-classical polyphony was many-voiced and without instrumental accompaniment. Inspired by a theme from a mass by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525 – 1594) ‘Praestet hoc nati genitor, I present a modern cello ensemble rendition of this ‘ancient style.’ Most conspicuous of the work’s attributes is the use of time. Rather than moving the musical ideas and themes towards a goal or through structural development and a sense of progress, the music (and time) unfolds perhaps as the natural swing of a pendulum; neither clinging to a past, nor anticipating a future. The listener beholds one moment continuously being reshaped through sound. Also, the concepts of melody and harmony as we assume them today are blurred. Of the five players, no one has the melody, no one has the harmony, yet together the ensemble combines to create a continuous flux of melodic-harmony (or harmonic-melody). This idea is of another type of ‘stile antico.’ Within the ideas of alchemy, which richly influenced the music of the 16th century and beyond, exists the concept that one plus one equals three. That is, two objects also create a ‘between-ness.’ So too with musical voices; the combination of two voices creates a new between-ness. It opens with the infamous narration: ‘In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.’ The show revolves around four members of the fictitious United States Army Special Forces unit. These are the leader Colonel/Colonel John Hannibal Smith (played by George Peppard), smooth-talking Lieutenant Templeton Peck or Face (Dirk Benedict), pilot Captain H.M. Howling Mad Murdock (Dwight Schultz) and mechanic Sergeant First Class Bosco B.A. Baracus (Mr. T). The main theme was composed by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, although the version they created was not the same as the theme heard on-screen (which is what this arrangement is of). The theme has been ranked among the best TV themes every written. Interesting, the French version of the theme has lyrics that mirror the spoken description of the English version of the show. In 2010, 20th Century Fox released a feature film based on the series starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copley as the A-Team. Alan Silvestri composed the soundtrack. This arrangement of the Main Theme is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for piccolo trumpet, horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. It has been designed to work just as well for indoor performances as outdoor concerts. It also has the band parts reduced down to march-card size for use with a lyre as well as a music stand (making it ideal for events such as Durham Miners' Gala). In writing this piece, I researched the musical history of St. David’s Hall. Unfortunately, it has proven very difficult to find specific songs/pieces from some of the key events (the only clip I could find was the Cory Band playing John Mile’s Music), so I focused on brass bands and Wales.The pieces incorporates Men of Harlech (Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech), Land of My Fathers (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau) and Philip Sparke’s The Year of the Dragon. Growing up with brass band, I heard Men of Harlech a lot and it has always been my “go to†Welsh piece. Land of My Fathers is the unofficial anthem of Wales. As for The Year of the Dragon, it was used both times that St. David’s Hall has hosted the European Brass Band Championships: it was used as the set test pieces in 1986 for Desford Colliery Dowty Band’s historic victory (under Howard Snell) and as the own choice test piece in 1992 as part of Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) Band’s winning performances (again under Howard Snell). The Year of the Dragon is also a popular piece of music in the brass-band world and has much significance to me personally.The name of piece comes from the GPS location of St. David’s Hall (51.48022° N, 3.17653° W), rounded to the nearest integer: the actual location of 51° N, 3° W is just off of the A378 in North Curry in Taunton, Somerset, England. The competition stipulated that the fanfare was to be composed for a maximum of five standard brass band instruments and so was written for 2 Cornets, Tenor Horn, Trombone or Euphonium and Eb Bass. An additional score and parts have been provided for a more traditional brass quintet set up.

J. Ricketts published Colonel Bogey and his other compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth J. Alford in 1914. One supposition is that the tune was inspired by a British military officer who preferred to whistle a descending minor third rather than shout Fore! when playing golf. It is this descending interval that begins each line of the melody. The name Colonel Bogey began in the late 19th century as an imaginary standard opponent in assessing a player's performance, and by Edwardian times the Colonel had been adopted by the golfing world as the presiding spirit of the course. Edwardian golfers on both sides of the Atlantic often played matches against Colonel Bogey. Bogey is now a golfing term meaning one over par.
