A very popular number for weddings, also effective for meditations and recital encores. Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. Lyrics: Still wie die Nacht Und tief wie das Meer, Soll deine Liebe sein! Wenn du mich liebst, So wie ich dich, Will ich dein eigen sein. Heiß wie der Stahl Und fest wie der Stein Soll deine Liebe sein! English: As quiet as the night And deep as the sea, Your love should be! If you love me The same as I love you, I want to be yours. His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties). Gabriel's Oboe is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission, with Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson and directed by Roland Joffé. The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Holly Gornik, and Brynjar Hoff, among others. The theme has been called unforgettable and a celebrated oboe melody.[6] Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, Nella Fantasia. In 2010, Morricone encouraged soprano Hayley Westenra to write English lyrics for Gabriel's Oboe in her album Paradiso. The arrangement has been made for brass band with a soloist in Bb. It was arranged at the request of Phil Shaw to celebrate his 50 years performing in brass bands.

One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.
