It celebrates the natural beauty of the Sandhills, prairies, forests, and bluffs, along with the strength of its people, its flourishing family friendly communities, and its deep and rich traditions in the arts. I have lived near mountains, near oceans, and visited some of the most beautiful places in the world, but none of those places have ever felt as much like home as Nebraska. Nebraska, My Heartland incorporates the poetry of both Willa Cather, the famous Nebraskan poet and writer who helped the rest of America gain an appreciation for the pioneer life, and Veronica Torraca-Bragdon, a contemporary poet and friend whose heart will always belong to Nebraska. Cather’s poem, Prairie Spring was chosen because it vividly portrays the struggles of the pioneers who originally settled here, yet juxtaposes this struggle with youthful determination, and the optimism and enthusiasm brought about by hope. Veronica’s poem, titled Nebraska, is the centerpiece for the fanfare and celebration of a state that abounds with success in all of the ways that make Nebraska a great place to live. The music begins as the sun is about to rise and burst forth with the promise of a new day. It speaks of Nebraska’s natural beauty and landscapes while the sweet song of the Western Meadowlark, our state bird, drifts on the wind. Next, the changing seasons and thriving spirit of Nebraska’s people are portrayed with an energetic, youthful melody leading into a celebratory sesquicentennial fanfare. But as the seasons change, the listener is reminded that to thrive is also to persevere, and soon a storm begins to loom. First the rolling thunder, then the rain, and finally the full devastation of nature’s fury are realized by the combined forces of both ensembles. Yet, as hope springs eternal, we are reminded again of the strength of the pioneer and the roots that keep us anchored against the storm. Three separate types of scores are provided for maximum flexibility. Whether beginner or experienced musician, these scores can be used in numerous ways from solo playing to playing with a partner or as a group. A note and chord reference chart is included as well as a rhythm pattern chart. Descriptions, suggestions, and uses for each score and chart are detailed on the introduction page and summarized below: Melody ScoreThis score can be played as a solo with or without singing along. Those new to reading standard music notation as well as those already familiar with music notation will find the numbers above the staff helpful. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the Tongue Drum. Lyrics appear below the staff for sing along enjoyment.Chords ScoresChords Score #1 consists of 2-note chords that harmonize with the melody. These simplified chords follow the beat (4/4 time: count 1, 2, 3, 4 in each measure) making it easy to accompany yourself or someone else singing the melody. Alternately, this score can be used in conjunction with the Melody Score to form a duet by providing the accompaniment while someone else plays the melody. Chords Score #2 is identical to Chords Score #1 except this score uses Rhythm #5 instead of Rhythm #1. Note and Chord ChartThis chart consists of two separate staff rows. The first staff shows the notes used for the melody. The second staff shows the notes in each chord used in this song. Any combination of the notes within a given chord can be played using one of the rhythm patterns. The chord names are shown above the staff. The corresponding Tongue Drum numbers are shown below the staff. Grand StaffThis score combines the Melody Score with Chords Score #1 providing a visual overview of how the two scores line up and is helpful for a director using this set of scores in a group setting. If playing with a partner (a duet), and both are familiar with standard music notation, this score may be easier to use since both players can see what the other person is playing. Rhythm ChartThis chart shows six rhythm patterns that can be used as an accompaniment for the melody. This arrangement consists of two parts which can be played either seperately, or consecutively: the famous “Air On The G String†(BWV 1068, as in the 1871 arrangement by August Wilhemj), inspired by Jaques Loussier´s “Play Bachâ€- version (hence the video link), and the fugue c-minor from the Well-Tempered Piano (BWV 847), inspired by the magnificent Turtle Island String Quartet´s incomparable swinging rendition. There are several options of playing this arrangement: “Air†has two parts which can be repeated – thus, violin1 and cello can distribute the theme. Of course, these repetitions are optional. If you want to play the Air only – there is an optional ending in bar 22. If you want to play only the fugue – start from bar 23 (intro), or from bar 30 (theme). Or you choose to play Air and fugue consecutively. The arrangement works great either ways ;-). Piano voice is written out. However, there are also chord symbols for your own voicings. Minimal instrumentation: piano trio (violin1, cello, piano). Comes with full score and all individual parts. Optional voices for violin 2 and bass, clarinet Bb, guitar, and drums included.
