One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers. Some use names, including Sally Brown, Polly Brown, Paddy Doyle, and Dan O'Shea, in place of Shenandoah.This arrangement features trombone solo on verse 1, flute solo on verse 2, and trombone/flute duet on verse 3.©Copyright 2014 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music. The three movements, which are all contrasting in style, all reflect fusions of the two types of folk music. Mvt 1, titled The Long and Hard Ascent, alluding to someone trekking either of those peaks, features medium-fast music in triple meter, highlighted with the violin melody incorporating a folk-like motif, using frequent double stops in the melody. Mvt. 2, Contemplation is a slow movement in quadruple meter, also utilizing folk motifs. Mvt. 3, Exultation, a dance-like movement in septuple meter (alternating measures of 4/4 and 3/4 time).

Brass Magnolia Suite (1999) for trumpet, horn, bass trombone and percussion was largely inspired by Gary Powell Nash’s residency in Mississippi, the Magnolia State from 1996-2003. Being that Mississippi, particularly the northwest part of the state known to most as the Mississippi Delta, is very rich in musical traditions, Nash chose to use some of these same traditions as the basis and major premise for his composition. For the most part, Brass Magnolia Suite is based on Mississippi Delta blues tunes and bird songs of those indigenous to the region. Such birds include the mockingbird, wood thrush, common crackle and the meadowlark. For Nash’s utilizations of these bird songs, as well as blues tunes, he took rhythms and melodic contours of each and manufactured melodies and motives of his own. While Brass Magnolia Suite is not meant to be programmatic, the five movements, which are arranged in a traditional fast-slow-fast-slow-fast format, all depict either a particular experience for Nash or a natural occurrence in Mississippi. The first movement, Fanfare, is based on the mockingbird’s song. The second movement, Homage to the Armadillos, incorporates the song of the wood thrush. The third movement, Catfishery, is supported by the tune Catfish Blues and the common grackle’s song. The fourth movement, Song of the Meadowlark, is exactly what it suggests and the fifth movement, The Gospel, is based on the gospel blues tune John, the Revelator.

Glorious Hill was commissioned by the Hilliard Ensemble and first performed by them at its summer Festival of Voices in Lewes, Sussex, in August 1988. It was the first piece I wrote for the ensemble and I focused on the singers' unique ability to move with ease from early music to tonal music of the present day. There were techniques which I asked for which I hardly needed to notate - the staggered breathing of the two tenors to supply a continuous unbroken held note for example - and the piece moves between passages for solo voices and sections of highly chromatic homophony, almost as if the music were switching between the 12th century of Perotin and the 16th century of Gesualdo. Each of the four voices is given its own solo passage, sometimes accompanied, sometimes quietly supported by the other voices. The title, Glorious Hill comes from the name of the small-town Mississippi setting of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. I wrote the music for the 1987 production of this play at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre, the first time I had written any incidental music for the stage. Williams makes very specific demands in terms of music and there is one particularly powerful scene, the penultimate one, throughout which music and atmospheric sound effects are continuous. The principle character Alma argues passionately about the vital importance of human choice with the man to whom she has, too late, admitted her love. I watched this section every night throughout the 4 week run of the play watching the different ways in which the actress, Frances Barber, played the scene. There is a powerful emotional and philosophical connection between the imagery of this scene and a passage from the Renaissance philosopher Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man which forms the text of Glorious Hill. This passage has been described as one of the few passages in Renaissance philosophy to treat human freedom in a modern way. The text, which is sung in Latin, is addressed by God to Adam before the fall from grace. Gavin Bryars.

The Battle of Shiloh (also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing) was fought on April 6–7, 1862, in the American Civil War. The fighting took place in southwestern Tennessee, which was part of the war's Western Theater. The battlefield is located between a church named Shiloh and Pittsburg Landing, which is on the Tennessee River. Two Union armies combined to defeat the Confederate Army of Mississippi. Major General Ulysses S. Grant was the Union commander, while General Albert Sidney Johnston was the Confederate commander. This Circus March is a fine example of musical craftsmanship which would display the great quality of the Brass Band.

Laczkowski, saxophone, Anna Draper, violin and Joshua Russell, piano. The selected river reflects a different segment of cultural life in the United States. The first movement is called Pecos River Barn Dance and reflects a Saturday night social event common in farming and ranching communities, namely the barn dance. The second movement is called Mississippi River blues and is influenced by the blues. . The third movement is Harlem River Funk. The funk style has a lot of intricate syncopation, a minor blues tonality, some harsh dissonances, and a lot of repetition. All these elements are present in this movement. The last movement is called Pee Dee Revival. The Pee Dee River runs through North and South Carolina and the movement is inspired by spirituals
