There is something for everyone to do, with a good dusting of pathos and drama.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792274). Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna’s most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna’s skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of them I. Groundbreaking The first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen’s Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen’s was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues-from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire-before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord. II. Steffl Steffl, the nickname for Stephansdom’s soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom’s north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna’s skyline. III. 1945 As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom’s roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom’s great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945. IV. Anton Pilgrim Anton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen’s Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen’s organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese’s love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna’s most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Rome's Pantheon, based on Greek mythical legends was first constructed over 2,000 years ago as a temple of all the gods. In the year 609, it became a Catholic church.Pantheon for Violin, Horn, and Piano by the great Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum is a seven-movement suite of chamber music depicting various of the Greek gods:1. Eos: Goddess of the Dawn2. Moirae: Gods of Fate3. Aphrodite: Goddess of Love and Beauty4. Zeus and Hera5. Artemis (Diana) Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt6. Hermes (Mercury) of the Winged Sandals7. Apollo: God of Sun and LightHere are the comments about Pantheon from composer Elizabeth Raum:Pantheon alludes to a temple, a musical temple in this case, devoted to the gods of ancient Greek mythology, several of whom are represented in this work. The first movement opens with a horn call as Eos, Goddess of the Dawn begins her rosy-fingered awakening, and rising from her couch, ascends the heavens in her horse-drawn chariot. She heralds the approach of her brother, Helius, the sun god, whose superior brightness causes her color to fade. In the second movement, The Fates (Moirae) spin their thread of life and death. The minimalist quality of the music, representing the steady turn of the spindle, becomes more and more agitated as Atropos, the Fate who holds the shears, prepares to cut the thread. The hand stopped horn and the Bartok pizzicato signify the final snip. A moment of contemplation, and they begin again. Some try to persuade Atropos to delay a moment, but she cannot be deterred. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, is the third movement. She arose from the foam of the sea and all were charmed by her grace, but she could also be coy and flirtatious as she is in this version. Zeus and Hera, the king and queen of the gods, make up the fourth movement. The opening theme suggests the regal stride of Zeus while Hera, furious at his many infidelities, quarrels with him and schemes to thwart his affairs. In the fifth movement, Artemis (Dawn Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt), holds high her silver bow that gleams in the night sky like the new moon. The clouds drift silently past while she runs with her hounds and dances with her nymphs. Hermes (Mercury) of the Winged Sandals, sixth movement, is scored for violin and horn alone. He is a very mischievous and cunning god, and his exceptional swiftness is aided by his winged sandals as he flies to carry out his divine duties. And finally in the seventh movement, Apollo the horn again summons the gods. A hymn to Apollo celebrates the god of eternal youth, beauty, and music. This is a major chamber work for Violin, Horn, and Piano of about 26 minutes in length written for Erika Raum, Phil Myers, and Peter Allen and is appropriate for very advanced artists.

Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boss RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you transpose the bass stave up one octave and use an octave pedal for the pizzicato bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although most phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: there are 2 distinct sections. The first is a latin groove with a a highly syncopated chopping groove and a simple, soaring melodic head. This section can be opened up for a variety of solo ideas from jazz to Latin to funk, before it transitions using a common tone into the bridge, which is more of an epilogue. This section has much more of a heavy rock bent, with a thick stack of string overdubs that mimic an orchestra sitting over an overdriven rhythm groove, and a breakdown where aggressive drum fills are accompanied by rhythmic chugging in the violin. Finally, all of these ideas culminate as the A section melody is re-introduced over the rock groove, building to an ultimate climax.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. I usually add additional percussive loops when I perform this solo.I have also included three auxiliary string parts, which can be used to perform this piece with a string section or an orchestra. The parts line up with the second section of the tune and replace some of the loops with live parts. ISBN 9790570484560.The Wounded Angel (2013) is written for piccolo, two flutes, alto flute and bass flute, and is dedicated to Christine Turellier, a professor of flute at the Lille Conservatory of Music (France) where the work was premiered. These pieces were inspired by a painting entitled The Wounded Angel (1967) by the visionary British artist Cecil Collins (1908-1990). His works have been the basis for a number of D'Angelo's compositions. For example, one of his latest pieces for orchestra takes its inspiration from Collins' painting The Angel of the Flowing Light (1968). In his extensive output the artist often used angels and fools as symbols of purity and wisdom. In the painting, the earthbound, winged, wounded angel is lying on its side with its eyes closed. Its colours blend in with the purplish colours of the earth. In the distance is a mountain shaped like a pyramid while the sky is filled with shades of orange. Just at the point where the mountain meets the bleak landscape we see the sun just rising. This angel has been injured and fallen to Earth and in its distress has to find a way of healing itself and ascending to its spiritual home. In this highly impressionistic piece the piccolo stands for the wounded angel. It has a three note motif and its wound is suggested by the semitone difference of the second note each time the motif is repeated. The piece is a voyage through all the states of mind the angel experiences. For example, there are moments of contemplation and peace where the alto and bass flutes play rocking rhythms in open fifths. The final bars of The Wounded Angel portray the gentle power of the angel to heal itself and return to the heavens. Here, following the motif of the gently rocking rhythms the piccolo plays two ascending fourths leading to a G sharp which has its resolution in the angels keynote A.

Instrumentation: 3333-4331-timp-2perc-cel-hp-strings Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write Pluto as a grand finale for The Planets by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered.
