A Gander in the Gloaming is a charming minature for four cellos, written in 2023 and inspired by observing our new family of geese taking their family walks under strict instruction from the paterfamilias*. The harmonic language is largely diatonic and relies largely on bouncy rhythmic interplay and dynamics for forward momentum, although there are some forays into dissonance and distant key centres. The mood is wistful but optimistic and fun. It is hard to feel optimistic, or even know what to do in the face of such petty ugliness that passes for political thought in this nation.For Tyrant I turned to the basic lessons found in Aesop’s fables, which are at heart lessons on being a good member of civil society…lessons that unfortunately I believe our nation needs to re-learn. Soon. The Wolf and the Lamb focuses on someone who consciously makes up lies to justify what he wants to do and feels alarmingly relevant today. Only lightly edited to turn the story into a dramatic scene, it is a very old story intended for the people of 2017.

Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1394109). Sunny was written in 1963 and released as a single by the composer Bobby Hebb in 1966 rising to number 2 on the US Pop chart. Thanks to its success Bobby Hebb toured with The Beatles in the same year, and other performers who have recorded the song include Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Boney M. It is an optimistic and upbeat song, but when Hebb's older brother was stabbed outside a Nashville nightclub this event inspired him to write the song. He once said about the song, All my intentions were to think of happier times and pay tribute to my brother – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low. This arrangement has a slight latin groove to the piano accompaniment, and the vocals should be sung with a direct, clipped and rhythmic delivery. Clarity of the words is very important, and even though the song is in a minor key, the performance needs to be uplifting, hopeful and encouraging. Watch out for the key shifts!

Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The first half,'Petition', starts with a plaintive melody that repeats in the other bassoon at various overlapping points creating anirregular cannon. Eventually a second melody emerges; the first melody now takes on a supportive role. A newmood created by these merged melodies is underscored by percussion. The simultaneous juxtaposition of these twomelodies, as well as the patterns emphasized by the percussion, foreshadows the main theme for the secondcomposition: 'Rain Dance'.'Rain Dance' is introduced with an irregular rhythmic motif, stated in unison by the bassoons, over a steadyrepeating pattern by the percussion. The percussion evolves and complements (and contrasts) the rhythmic partcreated by the two independent voices of the bassoon duo. A second theme, optimistic in temperament, is thenintroduced and is a rhythmic elaboration of the first theme. This second theme is an exact reiteration of the mergedmelodies from 'Petition' (however in this faster incarnation it is hardly recognizable). This is repeated in variousguises and the mood eventually becomes somewhat less certain.These two pieces represent two ideas; the plea for a reprieve from a dire situation - a drought and a petition to the'powers that be' for intercession, and the subsequent effort to bring about the desired change by taking matters intoone's own hands - a ritualistic dance to bring forth the needed deluge.

Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. Premiered in St George's Bristol, September 2019. “And then we see†is dedicated to the wonderful people I have met throughout my journey in Wellington School, especially to two of my very good friends – Simon, a euphonist; and Leo, a ‘cellist. Originally planned to be written for Piano, ‘Cello and Euphonium, and to be finished and performed in our last school concert as a goodbye gift, I had however not managed to complete the work before graduation. I have therefore taken this opportunity to express my emotions and sentiments from the time with this newly written piece. One can therefore very easily sense the nostalgia pouring right from the very beginning of the music, as I reminisce our years together. It is based loosely on a ternary structure (ABA) – the A section depicts the moment of farewell. One can hear the violin plays a very simple, bell-like melody, representing the bell-strikes which signify that it is the end of a long journey – time to say goodbye. The B section, based on the very same melody, transforms itself into a 6/8 dance. This dance depicts the pang and melancholia as we bid farewell, leading to a passionate climax. The A section then returns with the melody in its original form, announced by the horn. The coda concludes the piece, trying to move away from the tonic, representing the start of a new chapter in our journey and our optimistic feelings about it. Throughout the piece there are also quotes from the famous Westminster chimes, and variants of it, enforcing the bell imagery.
