The Three Preludes were a commission by the French Ministry of Culture as a contest piece as part of the requirements for the top teaching diploma in France. The trio was added several months later. There are several ways to perform this piece. The three preludes may be performed by a single oboist, three oboists may take turns playing the preludes and then together play the trio or the trio may be performed by itself. The duration is 5'10.Three Preludes and Prelude Trio was premiered by 60 oboists during January and February 1996 as part of the exam for the French national teaching certificate (C.A.).

RayThompsonMusic #4801954. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553821). La Cathédrale engloutie (The Submerged Cathedral) is a prelude written by the French composer Claude Debussy for solo piano. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy’s first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content.Arranged double wind quintet.Debussy indicates a meter of 6/4=3/2 on his piano original. His own recording plays all the quarter notes/crotchets in the 6/4 passages at exactly the same length as the half notes/minims in the 3/2 passages.I have done the same in this arrangement.In other words the beat/pulse remains the same throuhout the piece.

This piece consists of an arrangement of the very well known first Prelude, in C major, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I by Johann Sebastian Bach followed by two variations, the second quite long, utilizing only the notes and patterns supplied in the original. The first variation rearranges the sequence of patterns from the right hand of the clavier part in relation to the sequence of patterns from the left hand. The second variation very gradually stretches the voice-leading of individual pitches out of context with the unfolding harmonies, thus revealing a new side of Bach as an early minimalist composer!

Published by Michael E. Ropp (A0.971699). This piece is one of a series of compositions for brass quartet (two trumpets, horn, tuba/euphonium). The Nettleton Prelude is based on the Nettleton hymn tune, and was written for use as a prelude on a festival Sunday. It features a bold, recurring fanfare, flashy accompaniment parts in the trumpets (yes, the trumpets have to take their turn at NOT playing the melody :) ), an opportunity for every instrument to get the melody, and lots of really choice suspensions that give the piece a bit of a neo-Baroque feel. It is of moderate difficulty because of the running parts in the trumpets and the fact that the tuba covers a fairly wide range. Largely because of the great popularity of its prelude, the best known is the Te Deum in D major, H. 146, written as a grand motet for soloists, choir, and instrumental accompaniment probably between 1688 and 1698, during Charpentier's stay at the Jesuit Church of Saint-Louis in Paris, where he held the position of musical director.It is thought that the composition was performed to mark the victory celebrations and the Battle of Steinkirk in August, 1692.

An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background Op.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors. Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.
