Published by Musikverlag Zimmermann - Digital (S9.Q589536). German • English • French.Maxim Jacobsen (1887-1973) war ein lettischer Violinist, der in St. Petersburg und Berlin studiert hatte. Noch vor Hitlers Machtergreifung ging er nach Mailand und eröffnete eine Musikschule. Als Jude war er auch hier bald Diskriminierungen ausgesetzt. Er bewarb sich als Violinlehrer an den belgischen Königshof. Nach dem Einmarsch der Deutschen in Belgien gab ihm seine Schülerin Königin Elisabeth Papiere und er floh nach Südfrankreich. Weil er keinen gültigen Pass mehr besaß, galt er als staatenlos und wurde interniert. Danach wanderte er nach Portugal aus, wo er den Rest seines Lebens verbrachte. Die Technischen Paraphrasen über Kreutzer-Etüden wurden von den bekannten Violinlehrern seiner Zeit (Flesch, Kreisler, Sevcik, Pollak u.a.m.) hochgelobt. In Deutschland durften sie aufgrund von Jacobsens jüdischer Herkunft nicht mehr lange aufgelegt werden, aber wurden weiterhin im englischen Subverlag ausgeliefert.

A three movement suite for service or concert use including two famous American Folk melodies (Simple Gifts and The Ash Grove) and the German chorale Nun Danket Alle Gott also associated with Thanksgiving Sunday.  The festive first and last movements are for piano and organ duets and meant as prelude and postlude selections. The middle movement is a musical painting of the first Thanksgiving that paraphrases The Ash Grove played by a clarinet solosit, A newly written Native American Chant by flutist Linda Bergman heard on the recording, and the organ part serves as the narrator for the story with shades of Copeland and suspended harmonies throughout.  This piece is a great opportunity to feature some instrumentalists friends and the ever loved piano and duet genre for recital or church use.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1431445). “O Worship the King” is a free paraphrase of Psalm 104 (largely verses 1-13 and 24-33) by Sir Robert Grant (1779-1838), an Anglo-Indian lawyer who served as a member of Parliament as well as Governor of Bombay. Influenced by William Kethe's paraphrase of the same psalm, Grant's “O Worship the King” first appeared in Edward Bickersteth’s Christian Psalmody (1833) and later appeared in a posthumous volume of Grant’s work, Sacred Poems (1839), edited by his brother Charles.Grant's text includes six verses; many hymnals abbreviate it, leaving off the concluding one. This arrangement, employing the tune HANOVER by William Croft (1678-1727), includes music for verses 1-5, and may be furthered abbreviated to four by eliminating the repeat on verses 1-2. One of the most popular English hymns, “Joy to the World†began not as a Christmas carol but as a lyrical paraphrase of Psalm 98 written in 1719 by the English Congregational minister, theologian, and hymn writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748).Watts published the poem in his collection, The Psalms of David, Imitated in the Language of The New Testament. The free paraphrase is Watts’ Christological interpretation of the psalm, celebrating Jesus’ role as King of both his church and the world. More than a century later, the second half of Watts' poem was adapted and set to music by the American music educator and hymn-tune composer Lowell Mason (1792-1872) in his Occasional Psalms and Hymn Tunes (1836). Mason based the music, in part, on excerpts from  George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) oratorio Messiah, with the descending major scale accompanying the opening words, “Joy to the world! Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

The next section goes through many key changes, and coupled with the movement in the lower instruments, gives a constant feel of change, with the rest of the group playing rich harmonies above. The melody at this point is passed between the sopranos and altos, almost conversationally. The next section starts with the tenors and baritones setting up a new louder rhythm for four bars, before the rest of the group join in with a completely new section. It finishes with a paraphrase of the introduction.
