Small Ensemble - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.835850 Composed by Bela Bartok. Arranged by Paul Burnell. 20th Century,Children,Folk. Score and parts. 34 pages. Paul Burnell #5724505. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835850). Six Pieces from First Term at the Piano by Béla Bartók arranged by Paul Burnell for instruments in four parts.Duration 4:45I Allegro Deciso (No. 17)II Andante (No. 14)III Waltz (No. 18, Keringo)IV Folk Song: Moderato (No. 7, Népdal)V Where Have You Been, My Lamb? - Folksong (No. 13, Hol jártál, báránykám? - Népdal)VI Folksong: Allegro (No. 10, Népdal)The arrangement is suitable for multiple quartet combinations with parts available (and potential instrumentations suggested) as follows: Part 1: C, Eb (flute, oboe, alto recorder, Eb clarinet, violin 1)Part 2: C, Bb (oboe, tenor recorder, Bb clarinet, violin 2)Part 3: C - alto & bass clefs, Bb, Eb, F (Bb clarinet, bass recorder, alto saxophone, horn in F, viola)Part 4: C - bass clef, Bb, F (bassoon, great bass recorder, tenor saxophone, horn in F, 'cello)Part 4 may be played an octave lower than written.Any other appropriate instruments, even if not suggested above, may play.Although the score is presented with a layout appropriate for string quartet this does not indicate a preferred instrumentation.Performers may wish to consider playing each movement through more than once and, in an ensemble with more than four players, varying the instrumentation for each iteration. The arrangements maintain the keys of the original piano pieces, but many sections have been transposed at the octave. The original metronome indication in Folksong: Allegro has been maintained, but performers may prefer a faster speed.Programme note:‘First Term at the Piano’ (‘Kezdök zongoramuzsikája’ – piano music for beginners) is a collection of pieces for first-year piano students. The collection was collaboration with Sándor Reschofsky with Béla Bartók writing eighteen of the short pieces. The volume was published in 1913 and was intended as the first of a five-volume piano instructional series. This arrangement features six of Bartók’s contributions: Allegro Deciso, Andante, Waltz, and three Folksongs.

Casting InfinityEnchanted Tracings (Piano Concerto No. 2) (2008) for solo piano and wind ensemble was commissioned for a consortium of Donna Amato, piano, the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble, Denis Colwell, conductor; Keith Kirchoff, piano, the Harvard Wind Ensemble, Thomas G. Everett,Mark Olson, conductors; and Nora Skuta, piano, the Slovak Radio Symphony Winds, Kirk Trevor, conductor. These three marvelous piano soloists served as the inspiration for the work. The concerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.†Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeserved attention. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, and as a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonal constructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic idea behind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the first movement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirected formal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious. The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†the musical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and some disjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement. The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass. The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio. The spiky melodic material is treated in a variety of manners (including very tonally within the trio) before areturn of material from the first movement pushes the concerto towards its conclusion.InstrumentationPiccolo2 Flutes2 OboesEnglish Horn2 Clarinets in BbBass Clarinet in Bb2 BassoonsContrabassoon4 Horns in F3 Trumpets in C2 TrombonesTubaTimpaniPercussion (2 players)I: crotales, bass drum, tenor drumII: vibraphone (motor off), suspended cymbal(Percussion II needs one rosined bow.)Solo Piano(The above scoring is exact—with a single player on each part. Small Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1033406 Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 36 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #637186. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.1033406). The Sonata Hymnica series by composer-pianist James Siddons explores the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies and their words. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, at times whispering---as a sacred harp. In Sonata Hymnica No. 7, which calls for a soprano soloist, liturgical dancers, and two pianos (4 hands), three 19th-century hymns (words and music) serve as core material from which the music is developed. Movement I, “Climbing Higher,†is based on the African American spiritual “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.†The sustained chords, open harmony, and hammer-stroke rhythm evoke the ascent of a mountain climber. Movement II, “The Solid Rock,†is based on the hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less†(1834) . The soprano sings brief lines from the hymn, interspersed with long passages for the pianos (only) that explore many tonal and rhythmic qualities of the original hymn tune. The driving harmony, albeit in duple meter, makes this the scherzo movement of this sonata. Movement III, “On Snowy Wings,†is based on “O Come, Angel Band†by the New England Methodist preacher Jefferson Hascall (1807-1887). In addition to the soprano singer, the appearance of liturgical dancers as angels with “snowy wings†brings this old hymn into the 21st century. Performance duration: 16 minutes.

Mozart: Serenade No 10 in Bb "Gran Partita" K361 - symphonic wind

Large Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553778 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Classical,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 230 pages. RayThompsonMusic #4312367. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553778). The Serenade No. 10 for winds in B-flat major, K. 361/370a, is a serenade by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart scored for thirteen instruments: twelve winds and string bass. The piece was probably composed in 1781 or 1782 and is often known by the subtitle Gran Partita, though the title is a misspelling and not in Mozart's hand. It consists of seven movements. The serenade is in seven movements as follows:I. Largo. Molto AllegroII. MenuettoIII. AdagioIV. Menuetto. AllegrettoV. Romance. AdagioVI. Tema con variazioniVII. Finale. Molto AllegroThe work is scored for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 basset horns, 2 bassoons, 4 horns and double bass. The double bass is occasionally replaced by contrabassoon; however, the part is clearly for the former as there are pizzicato markings at points.I have created 2 additional flute parts to cover a dectet group.(who have 2 additional clts playing with them. The horn 1/2 parts have the important 3/4 solos as cues. There are alternative parts provided (for those groups who haven't got the full instrumentation) as follows:Basset Horns 1/2: clarinets Bassoons1/2: Bass ClarinetsHorns 3/4 In Bb: Horns in F.

RayThompsonMusic #1065594. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1488743). The two Serenades, Op. 11 and 16, represent early efforts by Johannes Brahms to write orchestral music. They both date from after the 1856 death of Robert Schumann when Brahms was residing in Detmold and had access to an orchestra.Brahms had a goal of reaching Ludwig van Beethoven's level in writing symphonies, and worked long and hard on his first symphony, completing it only in 1876 when he was 43 years old. As preliminary steps in composing for orchestra, he chose early on to write some lighter orchestral pieces, these Serenades. The second serenade was first sent to Clara Schumann, who was delighted by it. It was written in 1859 and dedicated to her.The first public performance, reportedly for full orchestra (version lost?), was in Hamburg on 10 February 1860.Brahms himself reworked the piece for piano 4 hands in 1875.The same year he revisited the orchestral version, this time for a small chamber orchestra. The new scoring was for :piccolo,2 flutes,2 oboes,2 clarinets (in A for movements I, IV, V; in C for movement II; and in B flat for movement III),2 bassoons, 2 horns, violas, cellos, and double basses.(omitting violins, brass, and percussion)The five movements take approximately thirty minutes to perform.Allegro moderato (A major)Scherzo. Vivace (C major) – Trio (F major) (This arrangement)Adagio non troppo (A minor, ends in A major with a Picardy third)Quasi menuetto (D major) – Trio (F♯ minor)Rondo. Allegro (A major)Arranged wind dectet/decet/double wind quintet and bass.Horns in C basso ( as in original) but alternative Horn in F parts provided. My clarinet parts are for Bb clarinets.

Small Ensemble Cello,Flute,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811685 Composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Classical,Concert. Score and parts. 32 pages. Piper Publications #3662763. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811685). The second of Haydn's opus 5 quartets for flute, violin, viola and cello published by Hummel in 1767. Unlike the first quartet, the cello part is figured though this piece, like the first, does not need a keyboard. The figuring may have been an after thought and would have enabled the amateur players for whom the published edition was intended to play it with the resources available. There are 4 movements, Presto assai, Minuet & Trio, Adagio & Presto assai. The quartet will be enjoyed by good amateur and professional players and makes a good companion piece in a concert with any of the Mozart flute quartets written 20 years later. The quartet has been lightly edited: obvious mistakes have been corrected without comment. Dynamics added in parenthesis ( ), slurs in dashed lines, staccato dots have been continued throughout passages where only the first part of a section or the first player has the phrasing indicated. The final chords of both sections of the final movement in the original Hummel edition were given different note lengths: the cello a quaver/8th note, viola and violin crotchet/quarter note and the flute a dotted crotchet/quarter note. In both instances all parts play a crotchet/quarter note. The reason for this is unclear; it may have been a Haydn joke comment on the idiosyncrasies of the players or possibly an adjustment for the acoustics of the room in which the piece was played. It seems to have been deliberate because it appears only at the final cadence of both sections.

Duration: 14:15, Score: 19 pages. In three movements.I. AllegroII. AdagioIII. AllegroJ.S. Bach's Trio Sonatas BWV 525-530 are some of the most popular and beloved works of the Baroque period. Composed in 1717, these six trio sonatas for the organ are among Bach's earliest works for the instrument. They are all in the traditional three-movement form and are composed in the style of the Italian concerto grosso, with two upper voices (treble and alto) and a basso continuo. The two upper voices often intertwine in intricate contrapuntal melodies, while the basso continuo provides harmonic support. The works are also full of virtuosic passages that demonstrate Bach's mastery of the organ. The Trio Sonatas are considered to be among the most important and influential works of the Baroque era, and they continue to be widely performed and studied today. The Bach Trio Sonatas have been successfully transcribed for a variety of ensembles, including wind, string, and brass ensembles. The parts are easily divided among a variety of wind instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. In these transcriptions, the original material is retained, but often with some additional orchestration or embellishment. These transcriptions often emphasize the polyphonic texture of the original works, creating a rich soundscape.  The Sonatas have also been successfully adapted for a variety of string ensembles. In these versions, the original two-part texture with the basso is maintained, creating a full and satisfying sound that allows for a more nuanced interpretation of the works. In addition, these transcriptions often add a variety of dynamic markings and articulations that were not present in the original editions. These transcriptions provide performers with a variety of options for interpreting and performing these beloved works.

Published by John Pinno (A0.775405). This is an original composition, in three movements, for flute, violin, and classical guitar, composed in 2006. This piece comes with full score, plus separate parts for flute, violin, and guitar. In 2005 I was asked to play in a chamber music performance, with a flautist and violinist, and was surprised to see how little published music there was for this combination....lots for flute , viola, and guitar, but not much with a violin in the mix. The few works I did find were written when composers felt that the guitar should sit in the background and play endless arpeggios, completely devoid of any melodic interest. This Serenade of mine aims to correct that problem. Timing: movement I ~ 3:30, II ~ 5:15, III ~ 3:15 This works very well as part of a classical guitar recital, when it's desirable to add a chamber work. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about this work, or would like to hear a performance of this, please contact me at email: jpinno093@hotmail.com. Large Ensemble A Clarinet,Bassoon,Double Bass,Flute,Oboe/English Horn - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1496456 Composed by Maurice Ravel. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century. 38 pages. RayThompsonMusic #1072981. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1496456). Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, composed between 1914 and 1917. The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements. The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order. The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. This is reflected in the piece's structure, which imitates a Baroque dance suite.Arranged double wind quintet/bass:Oboe 2 is mostly cor anglais, some bars of oboe.Clarinet parts are for Clarinet in A.

It was composed during a 40-day bus tour around the country as well as at my new apartment in midtown New York City. The complexity and difficulty of the music reflects some of the transitions to the new urban big city life I encountered in New York coming from a more sedate lifestyle in amongst the avocado groves of north San Diego county. I had a hunch that my composing could change direction somewhat during this time of transition and reflect a different character. In anticipation of this new stage, decided to compose one of the more technically difficult ensemble works I have written to date. I pushed the boundaries of my own style and ability in order to compose something unique for piano in this piece. I had in mind a brilliant pianist Soyeon Lee from Korea who inspired the composition with her virtuoso technique, and her unique personality. The musical direction was further directed by one of the strangest music tours I have been on with a cast of characters containing some who did not get along at all and quit the tour, while others got along too well and created a different kind of havoc. With a pianist from the Pacific Rim as one source of inspiration, while the wheels on the strange bus tour kept turning on the American highways, the title Strange Rims captured the many layers I was living and seeing at the time. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533673). Symphony No. 3, “Ave Maris Stella†(2005) was written for the Duquesne ContemporaryEnsemble and is dedicated to composer David Stock. Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life. The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece. As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive. The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento. At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways. The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement. In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive. There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motetsection ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and thepent-up energy dissipates to the close.FluteOboeClarinet in BbBass Clarinet in BbBassoonHorn in F/BbTrumpet in CTrombonePercussion (1 player):tubular bells, vibraphone(Percussionist needs one rosined bow for vibraphone.)PianoViolin IViolin IIViolaCelloContrabass(single strings)This is the complete set of parts. During the Baroque period (c. 1600 to 1750) music written in the Italian style, and German music to a lesser degree, scores and solo parts contain little (if any) information about elements like articulation, ornamentation or dynamics, so the soloists and ensemble players needed to make their own informed choices before each performance. This arrangement part offers dynamics, articulations, ornamentation and nuances of tone color as to how to effectively present the composition and can help the performer to build on these ideas to effectively communicate the sense of the music. 2021 Chamber Ensemble of Minnesota, Inc.
