As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to havebeen a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for hisinstrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academicresearch but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present partita, (transcribed in A minor for guitar), was discovered early in this research and it is well known and loved amongstguitarist and lute players of today because of its ease in performance, but at the same timemaintaining a high compositional standard in terms of well-constructed movements incontrapuntal two-part writing.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the opticalresult rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Instrumentalists have tomake their own fingering and choice of position decisions and in most cases they prefer it. My general suggestion for this partita is that open strings should be preferred whenever it is possible, as for example in the second half of the last movement where notes B and E are always sustainedas open strings in the upper part (indicated by the ties) and the required technique and sound result is that of an arpeggio rather than a scalic passage.Although here we have only a five movement partita and it is very easy to navigate from page to page, my usual procedure, followed for larger collections, is to give a thematic index in the beginning of the volume, with the first few bars of every piece given as photographs. If an electronic pad rather than printed music is used to play the music from these PDF archives, these photographs are clickable active links leading strait to the piece concerned, and the header of the page of any piece is another active link leading back to the index. External links to internet sources for further information on the pieces, live performances, etc may be added if considered of particular interest.

The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple groups of two and three beats.The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. The full score and all the orchestral parts are contained in a single PDF file. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available separately. This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: â??La Cucarachaâ?, â??Cielito Lindoâ?, â??De Coloresâ?, and â??Mexican Hat Danceâ?, all available here.

But halfway through, enter a bassoon and oboe under the dulcimers to broaden the sound and heighten the emotion. As the violin and harp are added in the final section, the song sounds like a big band ensemble. It ends with sweeping grandeur, far from where it started out.

It residescomfortably in two worlds: that of the diatonic system, which is key-centric andhas harmonic parameters, as distinct from the world of chromaticism, whichtranscends the harmonic boundaries of the diatonic playing field. Combined,these two polarities create an inherent pervading ambiguity.The work’s structure could be loosely defined as ABA, with A being spikey andfrenetic using many compositional devices in a unified manner, with powerfulrhythmic motifs. The use of accents on the off beats, the use of slurs, staccato andtenuto and the use of syncopation both within and across the bar, all adds to themaelstrom and energy that pervades this piece. This frenetic energy is enhancedby motifs which are rhythmically augmented. Amongst all the chromaticism, therepeated semiquaver is arresting, simply because it is not chromatic and providesa brief aural respite. The B section has essentially long melodic legato phrases,which are a counterweight to the opening, and the return of the energy of A. Theseemingly innocuous repeated semiquaver ultimately has the final word.One is left with the impression that diatonic or chromatic, legato or staccato, thatsyncopation and accents, are all so much a part of the language of music that theyare both a unifying and fragmenting force which create inseparable polarities.

It makes a wonderful item for a concert, with a Rondo form and a spirited feel that’s easy to lock together.The TV show has tried different versions over the years, including one by Mike Oldfield, but my arrangement is based the full-length version as played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.I’ve changed the key to D major so that everything fits on the neck of the guitar and uses familiar notes.Guitar 4 is tuned to 6=D to add more depth. An alternative Guitar 4 part in bass clef is also supplied, and here normal tuning is used.The original theme is fast. To be honest, it’s very fast indeed. And well-known to so, so many people.My arrangement for 3 guitars is somewhere between intermediate (for Guitars 1 & 3) and advanced intermediate (Guitar 2), and will also suit a large ensemble.Guitar 1 is the tune, and Guitar 3 provides the countermelodies. Both are 3 pages long, and a bit of sticky tape to the joins will ensure they fit a normal music stand with no page turns.Guitar 2 (the electric guitar part) is 4 pages, but I have placed open strings and then a bar’s rest at the foot of the page to allow plenty of time for page turns. On a classical guitar we can’t bend the top string by a semitone, so my arrangement uses slurs to make a very acceptable alternative (and a couple of bars have yet more alternatives in the score).The full 6 minutes of the original is here, in the same key, using a variety of textures that help to capture the build-up and decay of the original.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. This is from a collection of pieces I originally arranged for my Middle School Mariachi Band at Curtis Corner Middle School in Wakefield, Rhode Island. Since that time, I have used these arrangements with all ages through college, pros, and especially two families that happened to have the correct instrumentation between the parents and their children. At the middle school, the strings were more advanced than the trumpets and I needed to deal with young string players only being familiar playing sharp keys and brass players only being familiar with flat keys. My solution for one of the first arrangements was in “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I assigned the violins two simple double stops (their first double stops: one finger in low first position while bowing both the A and E string-the first finger on the E string is an F chord and first finger on the A string is a C7 chord). I split the four songs, two in flat keys two in sharp keys. The trumpets were assigned several unfamiliar pitches in the sharp keys like G#, but with plenty of repetition and not technically challenging figures except in the bridge of “Mexican Hat Danceâ€. I intended to cover that part of the song on my trumpet, but the trumpets always rose up and nailed it!The set we usually played included: “La Cucarachaâ€, “Cielito Lindoâ€, De Coloresâ€, and “Mexican Hat Danceâ€, all available here (soon).
