Momentum takes us on a journey to explore the hidden potential of the fixed metallic bars of the vibraphone in a live electroacoustic performance. Composed for the extraordinarily talented multi-percussionist Rosie Clark, currently studying performance at the University of Nottingham, and in demand across the country with a variety of ensembles and collaborating with Rosie to bring this composition to life has been an exciting and educational experience.The inspiration for Momentum came while watching a video of the Frankfurt based percussionist, composer, and lecturer, Max Gaertner. In the footage, Gaertner demonstrated the art of pitch bending a note on a vibraphone, and in that moment the idea for this composition was born.In Momentum, we delve into the intriguing concept that seemingly static metallic bars possess the ability to move and transform within this musical context. This can occur either through the physical manipulation of the performer, or by the technical wizardry of the technician. These bars which are often viewed as fixed entities thus reveal their hidden dynamism, allowing for a world of musical possibilities.Enhancing this idea of motion, Momentum incorporates a further extended technique of bowing causing the bars to resonate with an ethereal vibrancy. Pairing this effect with spectral effects through plugins by Michael Norris in Ableton Live amplify the kinetic energy of the composition. The aim was to create a great solo unplugged coffee-house version with no page turns, though it could still be really useful for any situation. The melody is left intact, some liberties with the harmonies were taken when there is singing. I'm very proud and happy with how it turned out, sometimes you get lucky and the sections fall perfectly into place (which is suprising since there are some odd 3 measure phrases in here). Features:1. Beginner friendly. The chords are so accurate to what the sheet music is doing, that you don't even really need to read sheet music to play this!2. Harmonies that take difficulty, style, voice leading, and melody into consideration3. Condensed lead sheet version that fits on 2 pages to avoid a page turn; yet it is packed with details and naunces.4. Beautifully engraved sections that visually make sense on the page.Tips:1. Measures 8-16 I named that chords as if both guitars were taken into consideration. I'm guilty of sometimes saying, Oh it's just a rock song with power chords, but then you look into the details, and the chords are actually quite jazzy.2. Maybe She sang needs a fermata?3. If a song is in B minor and never changes key, fret 1 will never happens! Be in position 2 for this song! That's why I didn't put fingerings in, they would have been as helpful as confusing.4. Maybe it's a given, but I recommend forcing melody notes on to the chord in one way or another. Sometimes I go on spurts of notating many complex chords to account for the melody, other times I just show one chord per measure but kind of assume that you'll make the guitar work more fancy with the melody notes. Maybe this is overthinking the arrangement, but there is great voicings I'm doing that I want to get across, but sometimes I won't do it because the score will get too busy looking. Just food for thought, depends on your agenda I suppose.

I first met the Acacia Quartet a couple of years back, playing in a show I put together for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, T​ he Beatles Unplugged​. What a joy to discover a quartet of such expert musicians who are also so open to playing such a wide variety of music, from The Beatles to Brahms! I wrote this piece ​Winter Love​ for us to perform together.Composing a piece for specific performs is, I imagine, something like tailoring a bespoke suit. I wanted to give them something with which they could show off their unique versatility; creating rich, warm, blended sounds one minute and fiery, energetic, even whimsical tones the next. I didn’t want to write just a quartet at the time because, perhaps selfishly, I simply wanted to be a part of it!The title makes it seem like the work is programmatic, but it’s not.
