Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus) is a play by Helmina von Chézy, which is primarily remembered for the incidental music which Franz Schubert composed for it. Music and play premiered in Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 December 1823. This is my arrangement for horn quartet of No.4 Geisterchor (Chorus of Spirits), In der Tiefe wohnt das Licht (In the Deep Dwells the Light) in D major (Adagio). This music was used to accompany the brewing of some poison which was to be given to Rosamunde. Originally written for a brass sextet of 3 horns and 3 trombones, and a male chorus, it has echos of Wagner. It suits the brass quartet, in this instance 4 horns. The original is in D, I have transposed it to F to suit he horn's range.

The Symphonie fantastique is a piece of programme music that tells the story of a gifted artist who, in the depths of hopelessness and despair because of his unrequited love for a woman, has poisoned himself with opium. The piece tells the story of the artist's drug-fuelled hallucinations, beginning with a ball and a scene in a field and ending with a march to the scaffold and a satanic dream. Having grown sure that his love is unappreciated, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of the narcotic, too small to kill him, plunges him into a sleep accompanied by the most horrible visions. He dreams that he has killed the one he loved, that he is condemned, that he is being led to execution, and that he is witnessing his own guillotining. The procession advances to the sounds of a march sometimes dark and fierce, sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a muffled sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a last thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. This arrangement follows closely to the original Orchestral score and is an ideal addition to the Brass Band Library.

Jeffrey Ouper #2033219. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866193). Faerie Tale Dances is a trio for sopranino recorder, E-flat clarinet, and toy piano commissioned by clarinetist James Applegate. A piccolo can be substituted for the recorder and the toy piano can be substituted with celesta or synthesizer. There are three movements that are about 7-8 minutes in total duration. The movement titles are 1. The Stroke of Midnight, 2. Mirror, Mirror, 3. Pixie Dust. Faerie Tale Dances is a three movement work depicting three different scenes of fairy tales. The first movement, The Stroke of Midnight refers to the story of Cinderella, specifically the ball. At the end of the ball, the clock strikes midnight (which is played by the toy piano) and Cinderella runs from the ball with the prince trailing after her. Mirror, Mirror, the second movement refers to Snow White and the famous scene and line said by the queen mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? In this scene the Queen is startled by the mirrors response that Snow White is the fairest one in the land, begins raging, and then starts creating a poisoned apple. Pixie Dust, the final movement is in reference to the prominence of fairies and magic found throughout fairy tales…the most famous being Tinkerbell of Peter Pan.

Program note: First of all, a huge embrace for Max Hobart who has been so very supportive by promoting and premiering new works for the orchestra. Since 1991, I have written three works for Max and the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston. Symphony No. 4 ... War and Peace is my fourth contribution and this work is dedicated to Max. A year ago, John Finney and the University Chorale of Boston College premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000. It was a millennial commission by the Jesuit Institution for the community of Boston College. For that occasion I had originally planned to write a Mass whose texts would include both the Latin from the Ordinary of the Mass - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Agnus Dei - and poems concerning the atrocities and senseless killing in warfare during the last century.However, as it turned out, the poems I chose ended up reflecting the Latin text, which is all about faith and redemption. But I still wanted to write an anti-war symphony. When I approached Max with this idea, he was very excited. Initially he was a little concerned that I might want to use the Tolstoy novel as my inspiration. I assured him that it would not be a four-hour symphony. In order to convey a political message through a symphonic work, texts set as songs are the most direct way. For this symphony, I have narrowed my focus to poems written by veterans of the First World War - some euphemistically call it the Great War. The first poem by Rupert Brooke, The Soldier, has an uneasy, patriotic cheerfulness to its message. The second poem by Wilfred Owen, Dulce et decorum est, is a more realistic view of warfare. Dying for one's own country is not so cool when the dead and the dying are staring at your face!!! The third and last poem by Ivor Gurney, To his love, reflects on the aftermath of war: peace, but at what cost!!! Rupert Brooke (1887 - 1915) died on a naval expedition near the Greek island of Gallipoli. He died of blood poisoning. Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918) was wounded three times in France in the spring of 1917 and was sent back to England to recuperate. He returned to the Front, and was killed on November 4, 1918, just a few days before the Armistice was signed. Ivor Gurney (1890 - 1937), a composer as well, was acutely sensitive to the horrors of the war and, after being wounded and gassed in 1917, he was sent back home to a mental hospital.
