Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes. German.In his set of five lieder with finale, Fazıl Say sets a selection of contrasting poems from Goethe’s cycle West-Eastern Divan in which the poet skilfully intertwines the intellectual Western world with oriental mysticism. Say creates passages of aria and recitative, the latter being characterised by the conventional accompaniment almost devoid of rhythm beneath quasi-improvisational vocal style, where the aria sections are passionate and dramatic. Arabic rhythms and melodies dominate the metrically varied structures of bars in multiples of nine which typify Say’s music. In his settings of the texts Say attaches great importance to comprehensibility, writing vocal lines that consist primarily of syllabic steps and intervalic leaps, with extended melismatic sections written as vocalises.

Published by jmsgu3 (A0.552826). Jingle Bells arranged for baritone horn (treble clef) and piano. Easy! Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.Christmas Repertoire Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder. Origins No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then. Traffic Signals Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce. Social Context Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. Structured in a simple ternary form, the outer sections are highly chromatic (loosely centred around the note B flat, but eschewing a sense of key) and there are many changes of time signature, giving it highly rhythmic energy. The brief central section is more reflective and is a free development of a motif hear in bars 30 to 35: a semiquaver 'theme' is subjected serially to four variations in a quasi-waltz style, employing this time a consistent 3/4 time signature. The sections are joined with a hesitant quaver figure, which is first heard in bar 19.

Commissioned in 2003 by David Arnold, a North Carolina bass-baritone who is a soloist in the 80-voice Chancel Choir at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Mr. Arnold premiered these songs at Centenary with organist Ray Ebert and cellist Jennifer Alexandra Johnston on February 27, 2005. A new version for voice and piano was created in 2005. A transposition for lyric Baritone was added in 2015, commissioned by Ferris Allen (Baritone) and Linda Holzer (Pianist) of Little Rock, AR.The lyrics for Ubi Caritas are based on a new translation, by Christopher Brunelle, of the traditional Ubi Caritas Est Vera. A recurrent image in this translation is the gesture of welcoming: welcoming love, welcoming God, welcoming the friendly unfamiliar thought, welcoming Christ with us. The musical interpretation of welcoming is stepwise motion, either up or down, around a pitch center. Perhaps this might be heard as an opening of the door, or an opening of the heart.An interlude leads to the second song, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, a musical setting of the Prayer of Saint Francis. The accompaniment is sparse, with material reminiscent of the welcoming pattern in the first song. This song alternates between triple meter for the thematic sections (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) and duple meter for the more recitative sections (O Divine Master...). The music ends as it began, with simple open fifths accompaniment, this time filling in the chords to express the fullness of the lyrics born to eternal life.A second interlude provides the bridge to the third song, Gaelic Blessing. The text for this song is a series of blessings for peace. The gentle chordal arpeggiations in the piano are intended to provide a peaceful accompaniment.
