Sankey 1877)   To describe might, power, security, protection – the images we think of are exploding bombs, a nuclear arsenal, security systems. None of these existed in the ancient world. The image of a rock, its density, its hardness, its inability to be shaken, actually, that is a universal metaphor. And so we find it often in the Bible.   Moses struck the rock to produce water. Paul tells us that rock was Christ. [Ex 17, 1 Cor 10] Moses was hidden in the cleft of a rock to watch the presence and glory of God pass by. [Ex 33] David often alluded to the rock as a fortress in the Psalms. [Ps 18] And the picture of Christ as the cornerstone is another favorite theme. J’ai rajouté la partie lente au début (« Lamento ») car le Trio Ahn est constitué de trois soeurs qui venaient de perdre leur mere. Dans le Rock bulgare il y a un mélange du rythme typiquement bulgare à 11 temps (4+3+4) avec des modes de jeux que font référence très largement à la musique rock. La pièce à été créée au Festival Montana Chamber Music aux USA le 20 avril 2024.The piece Lamento et Rock Bulgarian was written at the request of the Ahn Trio for a series of concerts with guitarist Antigone Goni. We would like me to use the materials from Bulgarian Rock originally composed for cello and guitar and make a new version for violin, cello, piano and guitar. I added the slow part at the beginning (Lamento) because the Ahn Trio is made up of three sisters who had just lost their mother. In Bulgarian Rock there is a mixture of the typically Bulgarian 11-beat rhythm (4+3+4) with playing modes that refer very largely to rock music. The piece was premiered at the Montana Chamber Music Festival in the USA on April 20, 2024.

The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others. This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness. The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello. (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics) The pdf file contains score and parts. The grandeur and vastness felt in the Rocky Mountains naturally evokes a sense of greatness and awe for nature. In late July 2024, when I was composing this music, smoke from the Jasper wildfires was carried by the wind to Calgary, more than 300 km away, and it seemed as if the entire city was covered in fog. It seems that even the huge wildfires are an irresistible force of nature that cannot be controlled by human power. I am delighted to leave a “Serenade for Strings” titled “Rocky” in history. The first movement is composed in the traditional sonata form with the theme of “Brilliant Rocky,” and progresses with two contrasting themes: a lively first theme and a beautiful one. The second movement is composed with the title of “Magnificent Rocky,” and expresses the beautiful and majestic scenery of the Rockies. The third movement is developed under the theme of “Memories and Reminiscences of Rocky,” and overall, it expresses the process of climbing and descending to the top of Rocky and the excitement of the heart. The short episodes that unfold between the themes express various scenes of Rocky, and the technique of expanding and contracting notes is used to express tension, vitality, and an atmosphere of passion. The rising and falling musical figures visually and symbolically express the shapes of high mountains and the foothills.
