The Grim Reaper’s Suite consists of five humorous and at the same dark pieces for five guitars to celebrate the humanity of the Grim Reaper. Two of these pieces are the well-known tune of Happy Birthday in two different and witty variations. The work was conceived to be performed live during the projection of a film by Apostolos Paraskevas called I Finally Did It. The work was premiered in 2009 by an array of well-known soloists at the Iserlohn Guitar Festival in Germany. Duration: approx. 10 minutes Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). His eclectic compositional style arises as an idiosyncratic integration of seemingly conflicting influences – from avant-garde approaches to harmonic structure, form, and timbre, to pop-folk modal and rhythmical concepts – amalgamated into a personal evocative musical language, characterized by rhythmic verve, melodic grace, dramatic (and sometimes unexpectedly humorous) gestures, and ritualistic or theatrical elements. The latter feature has also led Paraskevas to the creation of films, notably the acclaimed I Finally Did It (Gold award, California Film Awards 2010), dealing wittily with Death, a recurring extra-musical theme in his music. Samuels (A0.828663). 2020 SMP Press Composition Contest Entry for both the Contemporary and Sacred instrumental ensemble categories: For this easy arrangement (alternatively entitled, The Last Post at Eventide), the original Eventide hymn is transcribed for brass quintet, setting 2 trumpets to play the soprano & alto parts, the horn & trombone to double the tenor part, and the tuba (or a 2nd trombone) to play the bass part. Then a final variation verse is added, in which the 1st trumpet plays a slightly-modified version of The Last Post as a descant, while the other 4 brass instrumentalists play a slightly different setting of the Eventide hymn. (Consumers of Canadian Brass books of easy arrangements of hymns & Christmas carols will be familiar with this similar approach.) A piano/vocal hymn-style part is included for congregational singing. The approximate playing time is 3 minutes, depending on the number of verses and repeats required for a performance.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP100). 9 x 12 in inches.The Chamber Symphony dates from his New York period before he studied with the legendary Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) at the American Conservatory outside of Paris. Like other works from his early 20s, this piece exhibits an extraordinary grasp of structure and overall design within a tonal harmonic language. The unusual scoring (clarinet, bassoon, viola, trumpet, and piano), like so many other chamber pieces written between the two World Wars, shows the influence of Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), who would later become a close friend of the young American. The Chamber Symphony was premiered on 7 May 1937 at the Federal Theater in New York City. Jacques Gordon conducted the WP A Ensemble. Evidently the group was under-rehearsed and Diamond was not happy the performance. Thinking that the fault lay with the composition itself, he consigned the score and parts to a trunk in the attic of the family home in Rochester where it remained for over fifty years. I ran across a reference to the Chamber Symphony in the early 1990s and telephoned David Diamond to ask if I could get a copy of it. Thus began a sporadic exchange of telephone calls and postcards over the next five years. Among other things, we discovered that his parents and my paternal grandmother had come from the same region of Ukraine. Eventually he tottered up to the attic and sent me a copy of the score, with his penciled corrections, and his original parts, which I photocopied and returned to him. I performed the piece with colleagues at Kansas State University and sent Diamond a copy of the recording. He was ecstatic with our performance and told me I wonder why I've suppressed it for all these years? I got to meet David Diamond in June 2000 and we discussed the possibility of trying to get the Chamber Symphony published. He averred that his regular publishers wouldn't be interested owing to the limited market for such a work. A year after David Diamond's death I began my venture into music publishing and contacted Sam Elliott, a close friend of the composer's who serves as the executor for his estate. Mr. Elliott was happy to hear that I wanted to publish the Piece through Prairie Dawg Press and gave his kind permission to do so. I hope that my colleagues will enjoy this work as much as I have and that it will receive frequent performances.

Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

It opens with the infamous narration: ‘In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.’ The show revolves around four members of the fictitious United States Army Special Forces unit. These are the leader Colonel/Colonel John Hannibal Smith (played by George Peppard), smooth-talking Lieutenant Templeton Peck or Face (Dirk Benedict), pilot Captain H.M. Howling Mad Murdock (Dwight Schultz) and mechanic Sergeant First Class Bosco B.A. Baracus (Mr. T). The main theme was composed by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, although the version they created was not the same as the theme heard on-screen (which is what this arrangement is of). The theme has been ranked among the best TV themes every written. Interesting, the French version of the theme has lyrics that mirror the spoken description of the English version of the show. In 2010, 20th Century Fox released a feature film based on the series starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton Jackson and Sharlto Copley as the A-Team. Alan Silvestri composed the soundtrack. This arrangement of the Main Theme is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for piccolo trumpet, horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. It has been designed to work just as well for indoor performances as outdoor concerts. It also has the band parts reduced down to march-card size for use with a lyre as well as a music stand (making it ideal for events such as Durham Miners' Gala).
