Wilhelm Killmayer puts a single note at the heart of this composition. But whereas Robert Schumann took it as the starting point of his romanticism, Killmayer doesn’t allow himself the freedom to develop poetic melodies. Just as Schumann deliberately decided to live within the constraints of a mental asylum in Endenich, Killmayer favours the constraints of a very limited tonal space. Recurring seconds in the piano part illustrate the confines in the life of the ill composer. Even the addition of a vibraphone, bongo and conga cannot overcome these boundaries in the end. The only option left is to look inwards for an escape. German.Schumann was right in the middle of the preparations for the performance of his oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri when he wrote the sketches of Neujahrslied. How much vocal music meant to him is shown by the foundation the year before, i.e. in 1848, of the society Verein für Chorgesang initiated by Schumann. Choir practice and choral composition were to have a stimulating influence on each other which shows in the reviews of Neujahrslied: 'This is truly expressive choral music, being the product of a mind as sensitive as it is intelligent; both declamatory and melodic, the thoughts are full of fortitude and touch the listener's heart.' Schumann's little known late work is a rewarding addition to the repertoire for accomplished choirs. The score is based on volume IV/3/1,2 (RSA 1032-20) of the Schumann Complete Edition.

In the run-up to the Schumann Year 2010, Reimann now presents one of the standard works of clarinet literature in a tonally sublime arrangement for clarinet, flute, harp and two violas in which Reimann has left the original solo part completely unchanged. Reimann wrote the arrangement for the clarinettist Jörg Widmann as a proof of their joint admiration of Schumann. The world premiere took place at the renowned chamber music festival Spannungen in Heimbach in June 2009.

Thus began a reception history of the work created in 1852 before the outbreak of depression and fatal disease that was characterised by prejudices. With regard to music history, the mysterious, yet fascinating Requiem in the rare D flat major mode forms the connecting link between Mozart's and Brahms' requiems. German.At first described as a 'religious song' by Schumann, the motet 'Verzweifle nicht' could be heard with organ accompaniment for the first time on 4 July 1850 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the University's St. Pauli choral society in Leipzig. He wrote the organ version specifically for this performance for he had originally planned an orchestral accompaniment. That, however, could only be completed later and was eventually premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both world premieres, mentioned 'the wonderful effect which the same has produced' and that, to him, 'the motet was one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature'.
