An 18-minute concerto in three movements for oboe, harpsichord and string quartet.From the program notes . . . .I can imagine readers glancing over a recital program and seeing that it includes a work for oboe, harpsichord and string quartet. They steel themselves against the onset of what promises to be a dull and dreary piece played by unsmiling people in black suits. My imaginary audience may be pleased to find that this Petit Concert is nothing of the sort. It is actually a rather relaxed piece, combining something of the 18th century Rococo (which was never very serious to begin with) and Steely Dan-influenced Hindemith. But just as a chef will hide the most unlikely ingredients in his sauces and confections, I hope I have concealed these disparate influences in a piece which speaks with its own voice. Here, then, is a short concerto with little if any overt virtuosity; it is offered simple for the enjoyment of players and audience alike. In this it perhaps comes round full circle to composers like François Couperin who preferred to please their listeners rather than stun them.Relaxed the piece may be. To be sure, ranges and techniques are far from extreme and there are plenty of triadic sonorities and almost normal functional harmony here. But there are also moments of jazz-inflected chromaticism and frequent meter changes to contend with. It will take players who can hold their own in a mildly dissonant sound world to pull this off. Careful attention to dynamics, tight ensemble and flawless intonation are a must, but diligent players will be rewarded with an immediate audience-pleaser.A separate harpsichord part is included for players who prefer not to read from the score. Equal temperament and a=440 are assumed for the harpsichord. A two manual instrument is preferred but not absolutely necessary.

I listened for several minutes and amazingly never grew tired of the old tune. Between the percussive nature of the instrument and the unique intervals the out-of-tune comb robotically produced, I could not help but imagine what the tune would sound like when played by the large, rotating drum found on so many carillons. I remember visiting Belgium and seeing these extremely large automatic-playing drums. They resembled so much, on a larger scale, the music boxes I had been so intrigued by since I was a child. You may find certain etudes are even more effective when displaced, depending on the timbre of the carillon in question. Let these short pieces provide a foundation to improvise upon, or as an exercise in ornamentation. After a final repeat or variation, some etudes provide a final bar or chord. Just as Mr. Lu has said: No matter whether you climb to the top of the mountain or not, we are all embraced by it. It is true that we admire it not only for its great majesty and steep scenery, but, more importantly, for the spiritual meaning behind it, from which we learn humility. When visiting the mountain, the composer was moved to be lost and speechless, and soon reminded of the poem by the poet Kuei-Shien Lee, The Invisible Temple, as follows: I stand high, having no fear of seeing very far. It is blurry far away from here, and nothing can’t be seen. I insist on coldness, silencing the world in my inner rock strata. I am independent of the uproarious world of mortals. Those who are frantic come here, the invisible temple. Still frantic, they return to the world, without appreciating anything. With Lee’s consent, the title of the poem was applied to this work, to represent the composer’s feelings of visiting the Yu-shan Mountain. In this work, several songs from the aboriginal Tsou and Bunun tribes are adopted for the large male chorus and orchestra. It comprises three parts: 1. The talk in the night staying at the Inn Paiyun, 2. The Sunrise, and 3. The Worship, which are to be performed attacca (without pause or interruption). P.S. 1. The work was commissioned by Chew’s Culture Foundation, and was composed in 2005-2006. In December 2007, it was premiered by Chun-Chiang Chiu conducting the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Philharmonic Chorus at the Kaohsiung City Cultural Center and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, respectively. 2. It was composed during a 40-day bus tour around the country as well as at my new apartment in midtown New York City. The complexity and difficulty of the music reflects some of the transitions to the new urban big city life I encountered in New York coming from a more sedate lifestyle in amongst the avocado groves of north San Diego county. I had a hunch that my composing could change direction somewhat during this time of transition and reflect a different character. In anticipation of this new stage, decided to compose one of the more technically difficult ensemble works I have written to date. I pushed the boundaries of my own style and ability in order to compose something unique for piano in this piece. I had in mind a brilliant pianist Soyeon Lee from Korea who inspired the composition with her virtuoso technique, and her unique personality. The musical direction was further directed by one of the strangest music tours I have been on with a cast of characters containing some who did not get along at all and quit the tour, while others got along too well and created a different kind of havoc. With a pianist from the Pacific Rim as one source of inspiration, while the wheels on the strange bus tour kept turning on the American highways, the title Strange Rims captured the many layers I was living and seeing at the time. It was composed during a 40-day bus tour around the country as well as at my new apartment in midtown New York City. The complexity and difficulty of the music reflects some of the transitions to the new urban big city life I encountered in New York coming from a more sedate lifestyle in amongst the avocado groves of north San Diego county. I had a hunch that my composing could change direction somewhat during this time of transition and reflect a different character. In anticipation of this new stage, decided to compose one of the more technically difficult ensemble works I have written to date. I pushed the boundaries of my own style and ability in order to compose something unique for piano in this piece. I had in mind a brilliant pianist Soyeon Lee from Korea who inspired the composition with her virtuoso technique, and her unique personality. The musical direction was further directed by one of the strangest music tours I have been on with a cast of characters containing some who did not get along at all and quit the tour, while others got along too well and created a different kind of havoc. With a pianist from the Pacific Rim as one source of inspiration, while the wheels on the strange bus tour kept turning on the American highways, the title Strange Rims captured the many layers I was living and seeing at the time. A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and bands of around 2nd to 3rd section, although still possible with 4th section bands. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

Everyone knows how special the star was for the birth of Jesus. The star guided many along the way to find the manger that Mary, Joseph and the newborn baby, Jesus were at. This cantata reflects the importance of the star during that time. Most of the songs have lyrics about the star. The cantata starts off with Mary finding out from the angel that God chose her to bear his son - Ave Maria was redone for this advent moment. It keeps to the melody and Ave Maria words are still part of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics have the English translation in the song, while other lyrics are new for this Christmas song. The next song O Little Town of Bethlehem is where Mary and Joseph have to travel to pay their taxes and where Jesus is born. This is where the star shines down for all to see. This is the traditional song, but I have added extra lyrics at the end of each original verse. Next, the shepherds seeing the star decide to travel to Bethlehem. Pachelbel Canon is so iconic, but I have added lyrics from While Shepherds watched their flocks by night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. The choir parts bring rich harmonies to the piece. The Angels said leave your sheep and leave your lambs. Rise up Shepherd and Follow. Now we are at the manger. I composed the song - A Little Baby. He was born to save us all. . Still, Still, Still “Tis the Night of Our Savior’s Birth has added lyrics to each verse that ties in with the original lyrics. The title of this cantata is They Saw A Star - this is from the song I composed with the same title. It not only brings in the shepherds, but also the Three Wisemen. To close out this cantata, I have used the lyrics from We Three Kings and the melody of Scarborough Fair. This arrangement has an SA duet with SSAA choir parts with ahhs that sound very mysterious. It also does include parts for strings if you are lucky enough to have violins and a cello. The strings parts are the same as the choir parts, so it is perfectly fine to do this with just a choir. The title comes from seeing a sundog (astronomical event where a second sun appears next to the real one for a few moments) while driving across the San Francisco Bay Bridge. This piece was also used for a series of Drive-by Viola concerts (music presented quickly in strange places before the cops show up) in Boston in 2006 and for the The Viola is (not a) Joke concert for Mallarme Players in North Carolina in 2012. Includes a prepared viola part using aluminum foil under the strings for a tambura effect.

He and his fellow students were working on a special project studying contemporary composers whose work engages with climate change, environmentalism, and the natural environment. The students had been asked to read a chapter from David Haskell’s Sounds Wild and Broken and had further been given the following direction to guide them: “we are assigning each of you to a project in which you will seek out song repertoire from a living composer whose work responds to climate change or the natural environment, heightening our connection to and awareness of the natural world. This topic has arisen from a call to Bard faculty to #MakeClimateAClass: Bard faculty are urged to use our collective power as educators to engage with the climate change crisis.â€Jun wrote to me that he was drawn to my music and asked whether any of my songs might fit within this subject area. At the time I had plenty of songs that spoke of the natural world, but none I could categorize as specifically dealing with the class’ more narrow focus, so I offered to write this song on a poem by one of my favorite poets, Carl Sandburg, who even by the early twentieth century was noting the degradation of the natural environment and its impact on life of all kinds trying to adjust to changed circumstances brought on in one way or another by man. I quickly found the poem Buffalo Dusk, seeing how strongly it speaks of the extinction of species and the loss that represents. Jun and his teachers remarked what a “beautiful and sad poem†it was, so in short order I was pleased to present this song to Jun, who gave Buffalo Dusk its first performance in April of 2023 at the Bard Conservatory.

Vorbeiziehende Bäume is part of a set of eleven pieces for saxophone duo (all others will be uploaded soon) called Eisenbahn (Railroad). All eleven pieces have titles related to the railway. If you are wondering why a German title, the reason is quite simple: that's where the composer lives. In this edition, Vorbeiziehende Bäume is offered in four instrumental combinations: - 2 saxophones (2 Tenor or 2 Alto) - Alto Sax + Tenor Sax - 2 Baritone Sax - Bb Clarinet + Tenor Sax No parts are needed: scores are already transposed (practice showed that it is much efficient to read this piece from the score, seeing also the partner's part). The piece, that is dedicated to Albanian clarinetist Ibrahim Gunbardhi, has been performed by him together with Mr. Thomas Sauer. In the introduction, we hear the 12- note-row (yes, it's pure 12-note serial, but there's no need totell them this). Then very long pauses as the spider waits for prey to approach. Frenetic activity leads to the capture of prey and its consumption. The arachnophobe (instruments and players) scream on seeing the spider. A relatively consonant waltz depicts the halting, tapping, very careful, mating dance of the male. She eats him anyway. Next we limn the hundreds of babies hatching and abseiling down on their threads. This of course makes the arachnophobe scream again. Don't use for a wedding, but perhaps for that murder-mystery evening or ghost hunt?DURATION: 4 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

I Will Give Thanks to the Lord was composed in 1998 and is intended as a more contemporary option to the sung liturgy associated with the mainstream Christian church, while still maintaining the integrity of traditional liturgical elements. This setting is scored for handbells, two C instruments which double the voices, piano (or electronic keyboard), and bass guitar. The music may be performed with one or more instruments missing as frequently happens for church services. The file contains full score, instrumental parts, and a vocal only which may duplicated for congregational use. The complete setting is also available in a simplified version for piano only. Much of the liturgy is in the form of Call and Response, that is, a music leader sings a phrase and the congregation responds, often repeating the initial phrase exactly. There are two versions for the Nunc Dimittis, the congregational response following Holy Communion. The first is a paraphrase of Simeon’s exclamation at seeing the child Jesus. The second is the traditional text as found in Luke 2 with accompaniment on organ only.

Directed by Roland Joffé and written by Robert Bolt, the film stars Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, Ray McAnally, Aidan Quinn, Cherie Lunghi, and Liam Neeson. The film premiered in competition at the 39th Cannes Film Festival, winning the Palme d'Or. At the 59th Academy Awards it was nominated for seven awards including Best Picture and Best Director, winning for Best Cinematography. The director only proposed the writing of the music to Ennio Morricone after editing; the latter, after seeing the film, refused, judging it complete even without the soundtrack. Only Joffé's insistence changed the composer's mind. The soundtrack includes songs that are among the most famous in the history of cinema, such as Gabriel's Oboe. Published by Ali Hanna (A0.1264319). I wrote this piece as an epilogue (pun definitely intended) to a traumatic religious event that took place in February 2023. I won't go into details so I don't risk triggering anyone, but let's just say it was a lot. This is also the first piece I've written where the text isn't my own because my composition professor at the time challenged me to do so.The text of the first half of the piece comes from Mark Twain's poem Warm Summer Sun. It's intended to be an acceptance of the fact that the singer isn't the same person they once were. As the poem repeats, the singer begins to say goodbye to their old self and lay them to rest.The text of the second half of the piece comes from Madison Julius Cawein's poem Take Heart. I see this part as someone in the singer's life giving them hope to keep on living, and who that entity is can be interpreted in a number of ways. For me, it was the friends and professors around me that helped me keep going. I didn't talk to many people about what happened, but just seeing everyone's faces every day taught me that if they can continue living their lives, then so can I.I ended up adding the clarinet part after a moment of inspiration during my trip to the ICA ClarinetFest 2023 in Denver, Colorado. Voice and clarinet are my two passions, so I thought I would use Epilogue to put them together. This piece has yet to be premiered in its current form, but I hope to someday. English.Like few other theatre works—The Magic Flute, A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Tippett’s first opera creates a wholly other place, one where human actions can be seen as in a tilted mirror. Since this is indeed an opera, the place, or dreamspace, is conjured by music: by luminescent music that, in its flowing abundance, radiant harmonies and evocative wind colourings, represents the natural world within which the characters have to integrate themselves. The central couple, those whose marriage is at first subverted and then gloriously celebrated, are Mark and Jenifer: he a young man of the earth and the senses, she a young woman of lofty spirituality. Each is only half a person, and before they can be united they have to be made whole, have to find within themselves an understanding of the other. Overseeing their mythic initiation and psychic healing are two Ancients, votaries of a temple on a wooded hilltop.As in the Mozart precedent, which the composer certainly had in mind, there is also a more workaday couple, Jack and Bella. The other principals are Jenifer’s businessman father King Fisher, who wants to stop the wedding for reasons of his own, and an Erda-like seer. There is also a dancer, Strephon, leading the exuberant ballet in which the orchestra completes the story of enlightenment and passion. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.WES151-S). 9 x 12 in inches.In accepting this commission, my thoughts were to create a work that incorporated the rich history of Chautauqua and its pure, innocent, ruralAmericana experience. Seeing its heritage was grounded in a nondenominational understanding of God, which incorporated both secular andspiritual experience, it seemed fitting to arrange a work that bound these two ideals into one work. The arrangement opens with a stately expressionof valor, dignity, and innocence lost - developing gently through a series of tonal and textural adaptations of the hymn tune until it finds a stately tuttiexpression for the ensemble. But the end is delayed by the arrival of a false cadence at rehearsal D, which embraces a 'river dance' with a variety ofpercussive features. The idea here is one of 'beauty from ashes' and 'joy coming in the new mornings dew.' The reeds are now used to express thebagpipe above the thrusts of the percussion. Soon, the hymn tune is heard again, supported by the rhythmic dance in reeds, brass, and percussion -now filled with the joy of community participation. Each counter-melodic line is somewhat of a statement now - and, must be heard in itsuniqueness. It is as if the birds have begun to sing again, each in their own language, of the wonderment surrounding the new day. Hope has onceagain sprung upon the community through music.Take your time through the reminiscent, Americana moments, and enjoy the dance thoroughly!
