In 1942, during World War II, the British government set up a small base in the North Sea just outside British territorial waters (at the time). After the war, the fort was abandoned, but, in 1967, Roy Bates, a pirate radio broadcaster, claimed it as the Principality of Sealand. The British government’s stated view is that Sealand is within British jurisdiction. Sealand generally is classified as a micronation (a nation project set up by an individual or group, and has no international recognition.)As pertaining to the anthem, it was composed by London composer Basil Simonenko in conjunction with the governing Bates family, and has no words. The title of the anthem is also the motto of Sealand.Principality of Sealand: The Principality of Sealand (/ˈsiːˌlænd/) is a micronation that claims HM Fort Roughs (also known as Roughs Tower), an offshore platform in the North Sea approximately 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) off the coast of Suffolk, as its territory. Roughs Tower is a Maunsell Sea Fort that was built by the British during World War II. Since 1967, the decommissioned Roughs Tower has been occupied and claimed as a sovereign state by the family and associates of Paddy Roy Bates. Bates seized Roughs Tower from a group of pirate radio broadcasters in 1967 with the intention of setting up his own station there. Sealand was invaded by mercenaries in 1978, but was able to repel the attack.

The Cherry-Tree Carol (Roud 453) is a ballad with the rare distinction of being both a Christmas carol and one of the Child Ballads (no. 54). The song itself is very old, reportedly sung in some form at the Feast of Corpus Christi in the early 15th century. The ballad relates an apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary, presumably while traveling to Bethlehem with Joseph for the census. In the most popular version, the two stop in a cherry orchard, and Mary asks her husband to pick cherries for her, citing her child. Joseph spitefully tells Mary to let the child's father pick her cherries. At this point in most versions the infant Jesus, from the womb, speaks to the tree and commands it to lower a branch down to Mary, which it does. Joseph, witnessing this miracle, immediately repents his harsh words. This arrangement was created for three voices, Treble, Tenor and Bass with an accompaniment on two guitars for the annual carol service – A Star For Christmas. The voices do to some extent take on the characters of the three people involved, Joseph, Mary and the unborn infant Jesus in the context of the lyrics used.

It was occupied by the Romans during the fourth and fifth centuries but today has become the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast with a thriving fishing industry. There are many different versions of the lyrics and by the end of the 19th century, dozens of variants existed. The repeated chorus of “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme” is significant. In olden times, these herbs had medicinal purposes. In addition, parsley was associated with comfort, sage with strength, rosemary with love and thyme with courage. The song takes the form of a melancholy dialogue between two individuals who were once lovers but now live separate lives. Each of them asks the listener to pass on a message to the other. The young man requests impossible tasks from his former lover, saying that if she can perform them, he will take her back. In return, she requests equally impossible things of him, saying she will perform her tasks when he performs his. The fact that all the tasks are impossible seems to imply that neither of them have any intention of becoming reunited. This arrangement stays well within the instrumental ranges and attempts to reflect the melancholy feeling of the lyrics. The violin top note is E6 (the E above the treble staff) and the cello top note is G4 (the G above the bass staff). This arrangement would make a splendid encore piece for a recital.
