There are five parts, two for mallets and three for percussion, and can be played as a quintet or with multiple players on each part, using the instruments that are available. The two mallet parts can be played on the same type of instruments or different. One way would be for the Mallets 1 part be played on metal instruments, such as bells, metalphones, and vibraphones, and the Mallets 2 part on wooden instruments, such as xylophones and marimbas. Percussion 1 can be played on sleigh bells, jingle bells, tambourines, shakers, maracas, etc. Percussion 2 can be played on snare drums, high drums, wood blocks, triangles, etc. Percussion 2 can be played on bass drums, low drums, cowbells, etc. Being written for beginner ensembles, the parts are easily accessible to percussion ensembles, Â as a percussion feature for a holiday concert, or in a general music class when percussion instruments are being learned.

This theme is so popular that it was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. And the version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single recording of all-time. It’s sure to motivate your audience close to Christmas. The Prelude begins with a brisk tempo. Although notated in 3, as is customary in more modern renditions (the original theme was notated in 6), the tempo must be fast enough that two measures of 3 create a binary pairing (like 6/4 in two). It may be necessary to slightly slow down the roll speed to avoid a frenetic sound. The difficulty level is easy. There are no changes of key, and keyboard parts require only two mallets each. The expression of this beautiful tune will be greatly enhanced by exaggerating the contrasts of dynamics. Accompaniment and ornamental figures must at all times be sublimated to the familiar theme. At letter D, players should sing the well-known words in order to lead the audience or congregation in group singing. It would be helpful for the conductor to turn and face the audience at this point. This closing passage may be repeated for any number of sung verses. Use a smooth, relaxed stroke to elicit as much legato as possible. At points a continuous arpeggio accompaniment is divided among the instruments. Care must be taken to keep the sixteenth note speed consistent. Prelude on Silent Night would serve equally well in recital or in a church service. Duration is 2:20. Hailing from the The Oxford Book of Carols this German plainsong melody—from the Piae Cantones, 1583—has made its way into strong choral and worship traditions at Advent/Christmas.Of all the current texts and arrangements available, this version honors Holst’s unison accompanied setting in an unexpected subtle jazz styling, with the hope of bringing additional range to its established place in advent literature (both in terms of style and in appeal to a variety of age groups). And, On This Day Earth Shall Ring, translated by Jane M. Joseph (text in the public domain) gives it just the traditional touch needed for Jazz Hodie (On this Day).This SATB setting of the tune offers accompaniment designed for piano or organ, optional acoustic/string bass and an optional part for a single player involving three of the percussionist section best friends in the : the suspended cymbal, mallets (vibraphone, marimba or bells or bell lyre), and a small triangle. It should be noted that an electronic piano/synthesizer voice could substitute well for the mallets and the use of handbells is also viable. Perfect for Lessons & Carols presentations!The unison singing and bell-tone echoes of the first stanza/refrain soon give way to smooth, contrasting jazz harmony. The choral ranges are very much within the reach of the average choir and the voicings vary from unison to three and four parts, followed by a return to the character of the opening. The piece builds toward a close with a choral ascent in the final bars and a bass line reminiscent of the first verse, but with an extra jazz twist. But, it can easily be restarted for processional use by simply dropping back into the C minor introduction’s bass line. Andean Refrains, composed by Dan Heslink The composing of Andean Refrains resulted from the composer’s travels in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, where he came to know and enjoy the melodies of the indigenous Andean band. Although the marimba is not an instrument of that region, it seems to be well-suited to the music’s technical and expressive demands. Requiring four marimbas and one xylophone, Andean Refrains is an original composition employing tradition Andean musical styles. Some of the five parts require four mallets, the others require two. It is best to perform the bass part on a marimba that can play two octaves below middle C, but if no instrument with that range is available octave transpositions of some notes is acceptable. In this work the marimbas imitate the wide vibrato of zampoñas, or panpipes, with rapidly alternating octaves. The notched-end wooden flute, quena, is suggested with hard mallets on the xylophone, and of course the guitars and charango (Andean ukulele) transcribe well to marimba with four mallets. The bass end of the marimba provides the register of the guitarrone. Chaccha, the rattle of llama toenails, is simulated by instructing one marimbaist to at times strike the bar with the handles of the mallet. With this work the composer hopes to capture the quiet dignity and inevitability of life’s events expressed by Andean musicians.
