Published by David Heywood (A0.910421). On a Slow Boat to China has been a favorite of jazz musicians for over 75 years because of its grooving melody and fantastic chord changes. In that tradition, here is a hard swinging arrangement for four flutes (Three C Flutes and Alto Flute) along with rhythm section. After a dramatic chromatic introduction, the groove is set by a bass ostinato pedal that helps the melody build to the second half. All four flutes have a shot at the melody before opening up for solos for everyone over these great changes. After the solos, there is a stop time flute feature where a written out line is passed back and forth between all the players giving the effect of a group improvisation. It finishes with the same high-energy ostinato pedal. The chart includes written out piano voicings and bass lines, along with an optional guitar part. At a medium advanced level, this chart is well within the reach of most doublers, and is a swinging addition to any program!

This was originally written for organ and includes a number of variations of the melody (Choralis). At the beginning is the version found in the German Lutheran Hymnal of 1912 which introduces the tune. As is usual for music of this period, the parts are rather independent and require careful counting! The hymn tune is found in different voices in each variation. This was music written to be played at Christmas. It is set for two oboes, English horn, and bassoon. Depending on the tempo, this is not difficult music, but it is best not to play too slowly!

In these 112 measures for the twinning of Istanbul-Algeciras I have wanted to incorporate concepts from both parties, with the respect that the composition of Don Joan Manuel Serrat deserves in which in 1970 he sang “Mare Nostrum†(Nostrum mare more correctly in Latin classic, being one of the popular anthems of Spain and therefore a cultural heritage. Therefore it can be used instrumentally or if required, there is a number in the score of which, although the guitar has a melody and one of the choral voices, with two guitars, or make two choral voices or join with your own melody, use both bowed string instruments and plucked strings, etc.Likewise, there are two voices, of which a single voice can use the phrasings of both one voice and the other, giving it its own personality.The tempo will be whatever the interpretation itself wants, much slower, without accelerating so much between the beginning and the moment of the song itself. For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry Eternal Bridge was made to be performed by a group of six soloists playing the following instruments: Oboe, Harp, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. It is not a difficult piece once learned. It is really a great fun for the players and very easy listening too, It covers a very wide range of audience demands. There is a groove feeling on it that makes it very pleasant to most all people. Because of its plasticity the piece allows many interpretations, therefore I did not made much use of interpretation symbols in order to leave to the performers the freedom of doing their own. Bowing and fingering are left totally virgin at the hands of the schools or the creativity of the performing Artists. P.S. - The score was written on Finale. The sound file For the 2018 Chamber Music Contest Entry, was performed with samplers from Garritan and conceived as an audio support for the presentation of the score. Imagine a little railway station, a train that comes and stops, and your friends go inside. As you step on the little stairs to go inside, the doors close letting you out, and the train starts rolling. It speeds up very fast and enough so you can`t jump out of the little stairs back to the ground, you are holding now to the iron bars around the doors of the train, you see your friends and the people inside but they can`t see you, they can`t hear you, and you notice that the train is now on a bridge so high, that you can`t see the earth any more. Wind is blowing around me and I feel this cosmic cold and everything starts to twist around in a gigantic spiral. I still feel the Gravity but it goes in all directions at the same time pushing me violently and I feared to fail the grip on the iron bars and fall down, in an imaginary endless abyss. Little by little the speed of the events slows down progressively until everything freezes. Now, The other side of the bridge does not exist at all, neither the beginning or up or down. The train disappeared in a glimpse and I noticed that I was not falling down, just hanging there out in hyperspace, Free from Gravity. I lost the fear of falling in the abyss, it felt kind a good, because the only thing that I could see was light, pure beautiful bright white light, I was floating in light, I realised I could stay there forever, but then I felt lonely and wanted to come back home. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CMF183). 9 x 12 in inches.The clarinet is my instrument, and I think the two greatest works in its repertory (and two of the greatest of all chamber works) are the quintets for clarinet and strings by Mozart and Brahms. In writing for this combination of instruments, I borrowed ideas shamelessly from both.I would describe the style as folk-inspired classical chamber music. The melodies are song-like or dance-like; the harmonies are simple, modal, and consonant. The time signatures of the three movements are 7/8, 5/4, 7/8 - unusual in classical music but common in the folk music of some eastern European countries. The texture is homophonic in some places and contrapuntal in others, always with at least one melody, often with more than one. The clarinet is not treated as a solo instrument but is integrated into the ensemble.The first movement is in sonata form. As in the Mozart and Brahms quintets, it begins in the strings, with the clarinet entering a few bars later on a rising arpeggio. The first theme is song-like; the second theme is dance like. The movement ends quietly on a phrase from the second theme. The form of the second movement begins with a song for the cello, repeated in the clarinet. The next section features a dance-like melody in the second violin, repeated in the clarinet with a descant in the first violin. Then a brief section in the minor, featuring the viola, leads to a repetition of the song that opened the movement, this time in the viola, repeated in the violins and the clarinet.The third movement is a set of variations on a brisk, dance-like theme. After several variations, including two in the minor mode, the tempo slows to adagio for the next-to-last variation (as in the last movement of the Mozart quintet). That variation features a duet for the first violin and the clarinet (as in the slow movement ofthe Brahms quintet). The final variation returns to the brisk tempo and brings back the melodic figure that ends the first movement. A brief coda on this melodic figure concludes the piece.

Composed in 1813, and publised in 1889, Schubert's wind octet D72 is incomplete. The minuet and trio, and finale exist, along with a fragment of 100 bars of the first movement. The 2nd slow movement (if there was one) is missing. This is my 4 movement octet: 1.Allegro (finished by me from the “fragmentâ€) 2. Allegretto (from Rosamunde string quartet†3. Menuetto and 2 Trios (original) 4. Allegro (original) Mvt.1.The fragment seems to show the end of the development, flowing into the recapitulation. I have now completed the first movment, with the expostion starting in F, and 2nd theme moduating into the Dominant C major. An optional repeat has been added, the 2nd time bar has a diminshed 7th chord I have created a new deveopment section in D minor, using themes from the fragment , which then leads into the start of the fragment., which leads to the recapitualtion. This has both themes in F and brings the movement to an end The new movement is 232 bars long. I have made some light tweaks to Schubert's original work. My new 1st mvt. lasts 5 mins 2 seconds without my repeat. (About 7 mins 20 secs with) Check out my other arrangements for wind quartet, wind quintet and wind dectet Mvt.2 is an arrangement of the slow movement of the “Rosamunde†string quartet. I have transposed this into Bb. (NATURAL HORN PARTS in Bb basso)(Hn in F provided) Mvts 3/4 are Schubert’s originals, but the clarinet parts are in Bb, rather than C. The mp3 is of the 1st movement.

Entrainment (2009)Written for New Noise​Oboe & PercussionEntrainment is the process by which two oscillating systems, which have different periods when they function independently, assume the same period when interacting. The principle of entrainment is universal, appearing in chemistry, pharmacology, biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, astronomy, architecture to name but a few.This piece explores the entrainment of tempo with two initially diverse tempo structures synchronising after a period of four minutes. At the start of the score the oboe begins at 137 bpm and the percussionist at 63 bpm. Over the course of the four minutes the percussionist speeds up whilst the oboist slows down resulting in the tempi synchronising at four minutes. After four minutes the two instruments begin a discourse in unison (rhythmically, melodically, and dynamically): the musical equivalent of total synchronisation. In the final section of the piece the parts diverge with the percussionist slowing down and the oboe part maintaining its speed.As with many of my pieces, the starting point for Entrainment was an external source, in this case the song Time by Pink Floyd. The rhythmic lines throughout Entrainment are based on the rhythm to the bass line of the first part of Time. This can be clearly seen in the opening in which the oboe part employs this rhythm.Harmonically Entrainment consists of a series of key centres whose period is determined by points within the four minutes where either of the two independent parts briefly synchronise at the semiquaver level with the unit of a second. At each of these points (which become more frequent as the piece progresses), the harmonic centre changes. The harmonic centres relate directly to the chord structure of Pink Floyd's Time: at each point where either part synchronises with seconds the harmonic centre in both parts moves one chord through Time's chord sequence. At 2' 19'' the percussion and oboe part synchronise (albeit briefly) for the first time. This event was used to mark the start of more polytonal harmony as both instruments from this point forward begin their own cycles through the Time chords. Throughout the piece, points of synchronisation are highlighted musically.Performance mp3 recordings that contain a dual click track for the first four minutes of the piece can be obtained by contacting guybunce@hotmail.com. The click track is arranged so that the oboe click is on the left channel and the percussion click is on the right. An alternative click track (track 3) is also provided using a different sound (a beep). The performers should wear the headphone in one ear which corresponds to the track of their part. The dual click track can then be played on a single CD player (or mp3 player) with the output going to both sets of headphones using a headphone splitter or other device. Freely inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire, this quartet in three movements is derived essentially from the slow motif which begins the works, which generates most of the musical material which follows. The style is more linear than harmonic. The four-part invention which opens the work is followed by the second section (played without interruption) which is a kind of long suspended melody. The third movement is a quick scherzo with a final evocation of the opening motif before a brief coda. This is a companion set to Let’s Go! but the music is technically more challenging. The pieces are intended for an end-of-term concert or recital but would be useful for any light hearted occasion. The 15-page piano score also includes the saxophone parts. The highest note in the 1st sax part is (written) D6 and that in the 2nd sax part is C6. Five-page parts for the two E flat alto saxophones are provided as well as an optional part for tenor sax, which is exactly the same part as the 2nd saxophone. In the piano parts the improvisation chords are shown only in the 1st alto part purely for the sake of visual tidiness, but they appear in all the saxophone parts. If the participants do not feel confident enough, the improvising sections can be omitted. The optional guitar and bass parts are combined and the bass part is similar to the left hand of the piano part. An MP3 file of all the piano accompaniments is also available as a separate item. Summer Siesta - This is a slow number in E flat major which gives the opportunity to practise a soft singing tone-quality over chromatic shifts in harmony 3. Tequila Surprise - Written in 4/4 time in E flat, this is a Latin-style fun piece that lets the participants create surprises during the empty bars. The surprises can be musical or non-musical, depending on the performance occasion and there’s an improvisation section which can be repeated as often as required. Schott Music - Digital #Q20011. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q20011). Inevitable Rifts for string quintet, like Schubert’s Quintet in C, D.956, adds an extra cello to the string quartet. This undoubtedly makes for a richer sound, but what I wanted to explore was the tensions and differences created by forming an alliance between the viola and two cellos quite separate from the two violins, a rift heard at the very start with the lower instruments playing dark, pulsating chords, and the violins moving together in a slow broken cantilena. As the drama unfolds there are times when roles are reversed and also where new groupings are formed. The full quintet eventually coalesces in an extended central section based on the rocking figuration that accompanies a brief transitional dialogue for the two cellos. Inevitably, further rifts arise and the work ends with the two groups apart, although this time the violins try to emulate the pulsating chords, but even they part company at the very end. Rift, of course, also means a chasm or valley, and the placing at the beginning of the violins in a higher register with widely spaced intervals, and the viola and cellos at the bottom of their register, was a deliberate evocation of this kind of landscape. The work was commissioned by the Musiktage Mondsee Festival in Austria for Heinrich Schiff and the Rosamunde Quartet for its premiere performance on 4 September 2009. John Casken.
