Corelli's first three Trio Sonatas make a great first step into ensemble music and the music of the baroque. Each sonata consists of four movements of varying lengths and difficulty, with equal interest in all parts. Oboe 1 goes up briefly to top F, but a lower ossia is given. If played as a bassoon trio, the top two bassoon parts spend most of the time in the tenor clef and are not for the faint hearted, but grade 8 players will be well rewarded. Parts may be mixed with the companion arrangements for flute, clarinet and sax ensembles.

Program this either at the beginning to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Woodwind Octet, consisting of 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon, and features an Oboe on the melody, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check back periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. This Trio Sonata was composed around 1719 for 2 violins or flutes or oboes and cello or harpsichord. The four movements, Andante, Allegro, Largo and Allegro are typical of the other opus 2 sonatas and provide interesting parts for all three players. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy the musical challenge. All editing is clearly indicated using dashed lines and parentheses ( ). Some changes of register have been made- mostly moving the flute part up an octave to balance the oboe part and avoid middle C which would not have been available on most flutes of the period. Handel's dynamic markings are very sparse and I have refrained from adding more than a few very obvious ones as there are so many possibilities and it is so much more satisfying for players to decide for themselves.

It's an attempt to capture the trust required and the empathy needed to enjoy chamber music. Initially, this piece was written for the bassoonist Chris Vale and his trio New Horizons. The 2nd Movement features a simple melody which is embellished and shared by all players. The theme meanders through different keys before returning to C major. The bassoon maintains a steady rhythm throughout, and ends with semiquaver scale passages before a final diminuendo. The 3rd Movement a repeated motif throughout, and is a joyous evocation of an hilarious musical party. It features the bassoon and uses the maximum articulation of all the instruments. The last stanza (marked stringendo) challenges each player to contribute to the headlong rush culminating in the final unison.

This Trio Sonata is an arrangement of the first of the seven opus 1 sonatas for violin, viola da gamba & continuo composed in 1694. When most composers at this time would compose a trio sonata with all the movements in the same key, Buxtehude composed the movements of this sonata alternately in F major and D minor. The movements are: Vivace - Lento, Allegro, Adagio, Andante, Grave and Presto. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.
