This brilliant brass choir arrangement captures the excitement of the composer’s 1911 orchestral showpiece. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. Originating in Africa and developed in Haiti, the Bamboula was danced for festivals and ceremonies. Like Robert Schumann who often favoured the horn, Sir Michael Tippett who died on 8 January 1998 makes full use of the instrument‘s tonal possibilities in this work. He translated the Romantic genre of horn quartet into a modern tonal language: “All movements contain characteristic calls and triad arpeggios. Sometimes the call itself is the theme, as in the fugue. Sometimes the calls are the accompaniment to a solo, such as in the nocturne.†(Tippett) The forms of the four movements, however, are traditional. The structure of the first movement is reminiscent of the form of a strophic song. The second movement is an allegro, the slow third a nocturne in the traditional ABA form. And finally the last movement is a capricious fugue.

Commentators have opined that the piece's purpose is satirical – that [its] harmonic and rhythmic gaffes serve to parody the work of incompetent composers – though Mozart himself is not known to have revealed his actual intentions.The title A Musical Joke might be a poor rendering of the German original: Spaß does not necessarily connote the jocular, for which the word Scherzwould more likely be used. In Fritz Spiegl's view, a more accurate translation would be Some Musical Fun. The sometimes-mentioned nicknames Dorfmusikantensextett (village musicians' sextet) and Bauernsinfonie (farmers' symphony) were added after Mozart's death.The piece consists of four movements and takes about 20 minutes to perform. RayThompsonMusic #116436. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.504640). The Serenade No. 12 for winds in C minor, K. 388/384a, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1782 or 1783. The work is sometimes called Nachtmusik. In 1787, Mozart transcribed the work for string quintet. The serenade is scored for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, and 2 bassoons. I have added 2 flutes, so it isnow scored for winddectet (double wind quintet) There are four movements: Allegro, C minor, sonata form Andante, E-flat major, sonata form Menuet & Trio, C minor, Trio in C major, ternary form Allegro, C minor, ends in C major, variation form with the fifth variation (in E-flat major) augmented. The minuet is a canon. The oboes carry the melody with the bassoons answering one bar later. The trio is also canonic with the response to the melody played upside down. The finale is a set of variations containing a central episode in E-flat major and a coda that turns to C major near the end.
